  • And a hundredth part of the proceedings of this people, which now began to be numerous, cannot be written upon these plates.”
    Jacob 3:13
    A number of clues in the Book of Mormon suggest that after its peoples reached the New World they quickly interacted with native societies.

    I made the same point about Sherem to my seminary class. If Jacob is the son of Lehi where did Sherem come from? Answer: He was probably a native Mayan or distant law of Moses follower like a Mulekite living in the area. What no one seems to ever report on is the very HEBREW acquainted name. of "Sherem". שר i(Shar) in Hebrew is Minister. And שרים (Sharem) is Ministers (or in Hebrew when you add a plural to a noun it equates to a "highly regarded Minister"). So perhaps Sherem isnt even his real name and he is a minister who " began to preach among the people,". Other clues that Sherem was a minister with a faith in God is his tone and language as he refers to Jacob as "Brother Jacob, " He accuses Jacobs they he "pervert(s) the right way of God, "

    Not very convincing arguments. Lehi and Nephi were told they would be given a land for their inheritance. Nephi was even shown in vision the descendants of his people but he only identityies them as the descendants of he and his brothers.
    But the evidence is overwhelming that many peoples were living in the Americas before, during and after the supposed landing of Lehi and his family
    I don't know what to make if this but perhaps there is much more about the history of the book of Mormon than what is told in its pages?

    • @wa1den
      @wa1den Před 2 měsíci

      It amazes me that you find the explanations presented to be "not convincing"! It actually parallels very nicely what we see in biblical accounts. The Lord gave unto the children of Israel a promised land in the "old world", but they didn't find it uninhabited! It was already occupied, plus, there were additional peoples dwelling all around them. Why would it be considered a strange thing for that to have been the case in the promised land in the new world? The very text of the Book of Mormon declares that the Lord did not intend to provide a full account of all of the secular things, but rather, primarily the spiritual struggles of the "other sheep". In fact, the Lord gave instructions not to include more, and specifically stated His intention to prove us with these limited things, and declared that if we accepted and lived by these limited things, he would at some point reveal unto us the "rest of the story"! To me, all of this is completely credible, once we comprehend and adjust to the reality that the Lord had no intention whatsoever of giving us the whole story all at once, and very plainly stated that fact.

    • @weldenjon
      @weldenjon Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@wa1den To your point the Bible specifically states that there were other people living the land that was to be given to the children of Israel and they were mentioned by name. Many campaigns of war were waged against them throughout the time Israel took that land as their own.
      In my opinion it is a weak argument that the Lord purposely had the history of whatever peoples were here erased or hidden when Lehi and his family landed somewhere in the Americas.
      Furthermore, we have no linguistic path as to how the language of the Book of Mormons peoples evolved into the myriad of native American languages spoken today.
      The best evidence to explain this is that the Book of Mormon peoples were a small population in comparison to other peoples in this land and over time were completely assimilated into the cultures, languages and traditions of these peoples.
      This goes against the overall theme of the BoM people being the dominant people of the land and no where does the Lord indicate they will have to share it. Even the parable of the olive trees spoken of by Jacob (referencing an unknown prophet named Zenos) implies this land was cleared away so the Lord of the Vineyard could plant a couple of branches from the natural tree.
      Look, I don't disbelieve the Book of Mormon. But I can't either ignore historical discrepancies outlined on the BoM contrasted with the known histories we have so far learned of this land we call America.

    • @wa1den
      @wa1den Před 2 měsíci

      @weldenjon What I feel you are overlooking is that in the case of the Book of Mormon, the text specifically declares that it is a VERY LIMITED HISTORY, and specifies that it will only include the things that are of benefit spiritually to the future generations it is intended to reach and enlighten. This is NOT the case with the Bible... it is a more comprehensive history than what has been included in the Book of Mormon, where the Lord specifically states that He is giving a very limited amount, intended to test and try our faith. In the history given in the Book of Mormon, the text does not specifically clarify whether or not there were already other peoples present, though there are some details that legitimately can be construed as suggesting that there probably were. However, because those called to keep this spiritual part of the records were given very specific instructions to focus primarily on the details of the spiritual struggles, and to testify of Christ and His gospel, they didn't very often bother to include much of the more secular aspects that we are naturally curious about. But neither did they state anything that would rule out those possibilities. They don't tell us clearly regarding existing inhabitants or the size of their populations compared to the population of their own group, but I think it would seem logical that existing populations might have also already fallen into disbelief and apostasy, or possibly a state of ignorance, and the arriving Nephites could well have been a rather advanced people compared to those existing populations, and could possibly for that reason have soon occupied a position of respect and advantage relative to those peoples. But this was not intended to be a history aimed at enlightening us on those secular things. The stated purpose was to convince both Jew and gentile that Jesus is the Christ! The rest was extraneous to that purpose. Nevertheless, there are so many fascinating details from the text that were mentioned casually in passing, that in spite of having been greatly ridiculed and mocked by non-believers, due to not having been known of by the world at large in Joseph Smith's times, that have turned out to be completely accurate, and in modern times have now been confirmed as being legitimately ancient practices and facts (a process that is ongoing.and not yet complete). But, there are just TOO MANY spot-on coincidences where Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon are concerned to believably be "just coincidence". To not perceive and grasp that reality, you pretty much have to be in the camp of those who simply are determined NOT TO BELIEVE!

      @cshartwell1987 Před 5 lety +2

      I hear ya, man. I had wondered about some of these very things recently too (after hearing Wayne May mention it in one of his videos). Looking into it a little deeper, I think it's reasonable for the Nephites to have used works of stone (assuming you mean "hewn stone"), steps to an altar, and pyramids (also assuming the Mesoamerican pyramids aren't just Lamanite structures built by slave labor for the purposes of idolatry, shedding of blood AKA sacrifice).
      - Exodus 20:25 states that the altar shouldn't be made of hewn stone, but I don't think that applies to other aspects of the temple. Consider how Solomon's temple was constructed with hewn stone (1 Kings 5:17-18) which could be used as long as it was hewn before being used in construction (1 Kings 6:7). Hewn stone was later used to repair the house of the Lord ( 2 Kings 22:6, 2 Chronicles 34:11) as well as to construct a table associated with burnt offerings (Ezekial 40:42).
      - Exodus 20:26 states that the priest shouldn't use steps to get to the altar because it would expose the priests private parts. However, this seems to have been corrected in Exodus 28:42-43 with the adding of a linen breech to the priestly garb, and we see steps used to reach the altar in Ezekial 43:17 (which makes sense since the altars had become pretty elevated off the ground [2 Chronicles 4:1]).
      - Lastly, I wonder if we could consider the Mayan pyramids to be a type of tower. In our present day, we think of 'towers as being thin structures that reach high in the sky. However, a ziggurat is a type of "tower" from the ancient world (one that Nephi would have been familiar with since they were being built up to 600 BC), and they have a pyramidal structure to them. Also, there is precedence of the conquering Spaniards referring to Mayan pyramids as "torres", which is Spanish for "towers". Perhaps expecting to see a thin tower could be our present-day experience influencing how we interpret ancient scripture.
      So, there are some ideas to consider! I recently found out about all this geography stuff, and I find it fascinating. Wayne May has some interesting presentations, but I'd give the Mesoamerican theory a thorough look, too! I find it holds up better when I dig into the actual details of the geography discussion.

    • @phadrus
      @phadrus Před 3 lety +2

      @@rchaser4 it’s not an off shoot, it’s just there is disagreement amongst some on where exactly the BOM takes place. There is the old guard that believes it’s Central America for a number of out dated and very poor reasons-but they are very invested in their belief. And then there is more recent researchers who are restoring the original conception of the BOM taking place nearly completely in N America, and for this there is an abundance of evidence on every level including quotes from Joseph Smith and Christ himself in the Doctrine and Covenants. The evidence is so good it absolutely drives the old guard bonkers. But they will literally die off and take their views with them. Wayne May as stated above is a good source for archeology and places, and a lot of people like Rod Meldrum’s presentation and book for a thorough overview, and also checkout Letter VII by Jonathan Neville.
