- In today's episode, we rented a 500 horsepower Challenger 1050 tractor, the lime spreading crew arrived on the farm to spread crushed limestone, Roman and I finished the electricity in the heated shop at my house (YES, IT IS DONE NOW!), Dad and I had a farm meeting to go to, we checked in on Cooper transforming the property at the main heated shop, we set up the bin sites to get ready for selling soybeans, we bought a new grain hopper trailer, and a high speed Degelman Pro-Till Disk showed up on the farm! Whoo! What a day.

Cole, I swear to the lord, I'm not lying. As a person in the business, you need to spend the money for an electrician. I have seen you make at least 7 violations and made dangerous conditions. I love the channel and would hate to hear that someone got hurt and I said nothing.Bless the farmer!
Seriously Cole, the smart investment is to put your money into safety of your building and equipment in that building. Take all of these comments seriously and at least get your electrician to check your work. (if he sees these videos he may not want to touch it) Just remember, when it comes to electricity, be smart and do it right - don't do it cheap. It could, God forbid, cost you a whole lot more if something goes wrong. You are too intelligent to let this go! GOOD LUCK!!

I see the same general contractor that did the bin site, is doing the electrical. We've all seen how that turned out. Don't be surprised to smell melting plastic when a load is placed on those crammed overfull boxes.
I've been watching these videos for the past 4 to 5 years. With all the comments and criticism and opinions Cole receives his tenacity and determination and goals he has set along with his family just continues to grow annually. If anything his videos should tell anyone watching is continue forward and never give up. Cole is very transparent and honest. God will continue to bless you Cole and your family.
I totally agree , but when you put yourself into the public eye you open up yourself to that. Cole knows that. Not everyone else is idiot that. Comments. You have electricians, plumbers,mechanics ect that are fans and are merely trying to help.Cole is very open to knowledge intake and is very understanding of weather comments are helpful or not

I am also an ex electrician... You are correct, sir! Here in Sweden, that installation would be illegal as soon they started to mount conduit onto the wall. And if something would happen, best case scenario would be no valid insurance.... worst case: jailtime for killing someone. I am not even allowed to do installations in my own home, by law....

Cole, you should increase your insurance. Maybe have someone come and check your electrical system and correct these errors. Down gauging wire is NOT safe nor is it code, nor is it in line with NFPA. If that move makes a hot spot when you run the welder and causes a fire, you just posted photo evidence. DIY saves budget, for sure, but don’t put the farm at risk over electrical wire.
And, I just thought about this. You have two hots coming in to that plug. Did you cross phase the wiring? Meaning did you run one from the A phase and one from the B? If you did that, prepare for explosion.

You might want to learn the code as well. You set wire size by what you need to run but you protect the wire with the breaker. At #8 wire he can use a 40 amp breaker Way more then enough for 99% of the welders on farms. With #6 wire you can do 55 amp. He would need to be running a 500 amp weld full bore to be in trouble.

Congratulations Cole !.... You all have made so much progress over the last few years to the entire farm. The Transformation is absolutely amazing and You all work together as a cohesive well oiled machine . It is also well noted how you have such good friends as Ron (the bulldozer man), Zach & Roman who continue enjoy working with you all. The Changes you are taking to balance your Soils should pay off big time. I know You have been following Marion Calmers soil stratification tests and his results show it definitely is paying off. My Hope is your Legal team is making great progress on the Bin Site stuff as that is definitely something that never should have happened. Cole... You need to add pigtails to those 220 volt outlets....
Meaning, get big wire nuts or wagos, a short piece of 8 gauge wire, and stick the short piece of age gauge wire into the outlet, and wire nut the now three ends together. Much easier to deal with and less likely to burn your barn down.

Also to add, since it'll be blue wire nuts, an 4x4 deep with 1" ko's or 4x11 would be way nicer for getting the wires tucked in nicely!

Cole, thank you for sharing these videos, I would love to spend a day driving a tractor plowing or working down ground. I farmed with my dad. I grew up on the farm and after high school my father and I farmed together for a few years. Until I decided to go on to bigger and better things. I missed farming but never went back to it. The Massey 2745 was the last tractor we bought brand new. So you know some years have passed.
By watching your videos I can relive some very good times on the farm. Thank you again.

I gotta say what cole has done is pretty awesome, i work in a shop everyday that is a 100 osha violations, everything is wrong with it, a 110 outlet running 220 for some reason, and the whole 220 panel is running off a piece of wood, there isnt safety shut off features and when you want the power off you have to pull a fuse box out, while its running, i jusr dont know about you guys but this is some of the best shit ive seen as a farmer.
Cole, there is a spec. on how much you can fill an electrical conduit and box depending on the wire gauge and the number of wires you are using. Also get box extensions to make it easier to install the outlets.
Propriety is not a priority for some.
@@drstewart When I questioned concerns that I had regarding the construction of the new bin site, I was told that farmers in Iowa are not required to have a building permit and building inspections. The issues I had at that time was with the concrete pads for bins/silos. No slump test for concrete, very little reinforcement material used, and not curing the concrete properly.

I am more the Datacenter Guy for wiring. He won't have the problems in the next 5 years but after 10 years. My Dad did something compareable as he connected the new Shed with the old shed instead of using a connection box he used Outlet box for it, which was already filled. Had to pull everything out and shrink hose all the wires to get them isolated again.
Isolation goes brittle after 10-20 years and when it's stressed it may fail.
I see problems with the "old wires" used as well. If you have old new wires heat them up before using them. In Building wiring we had several cases of "good wires we can use them." And then everything was connected and worked for 3 weeks, and we had to pull the wires and putt new one in. The isolation hardens up, especially when it's below 20°C/68°F single braids of the wiring are overstreched when it come from the drumm. Generating a Weakspot in the hole cable. When Current flows over the Cables this spot may burn out and then the Cable gets hotter and hotter at this spot till the connection fails. Then Conduit is Metal and it won't burn down the Workshop but tripp the breaker and he might have to pull all the wires out in 5-10 years.
Data Cables only have 48V and max 100 Watt but thats my experience with old Cables and Stretched Isolations. Heat the old Stock up to room temperature, roll it out slowly and don't squeeze it into boxes, or you have trouble and have to redo everything.
Thats btw the Reasoning behind "Code" and "Spec" most Contractors are gone and won't do Warranty after 5 years when the isolations fails. When i remember correctly fresh cables should not be layed below 10°C/50°F.

Cole, when we had to go to that large an outlet we would use a 4 11/16" box and a raised cover. Then you splice the wires together and have only one wire to each terminal on the outlet!

I remember a video a long time ago where you had a map where it showed the lime blowing in from the road .. where the edges\headlands where way better PH then the rest of the field .. the big chuncks are ideal .. the are slow releasing .. and will break down way faster then you think if the acidity in the soil is high .

Those 240v outlets are supposed to be dedicated, you can't daisy chain those like regular 120v outlets. You should be using a separate color wire for one of the hot legs instead of 2 black wires. It is dumb to install those outlets sideways due to the fact that whatever you plug into them will have side loading on the plug from the weight of the wire.
Yikes. Not great on the shed wiring. Hopefully you don't get a fire under load.
Just a suggestion ! next time you are at the big box store you could pick up some extension rings to mount the 230v plugs without so much binding of the wires.
No need for that, 4 square deep box with 1" KO's would be better or even an 4x11

I'd still like to see results of a root plow being pulled, lifting and shattering the soil. Than a 10,000 pound tandem pasture aerator rolling the fields smooth.

Use the biggest box you can get with big wires and outlets. And Knockout Seals are for plugging the Knockout holes. 22:25
Cole, We work in the top 3" Cut the lime in half, No till use planting of cover crop do better then rip or working the ground. Take 100 ac and try it for three years and see what happens.
We plant 52,00 in split row 20" apart. Notill. Strait blade dish with baskets, Fall Fert and P&K Fall. N in Spring. We get 300 - 320 Average. rotate Beans Corn every year, notill beans STS or Liberty Beans. 60 - 80 Bu/Ac It was a big change going split row corn big learning curve but if you do your home work great rewards.

Maybe epoxy paint the floor for easy cleanup.
High speed discs are cool! And they should be used correctly. Using too much can cause a hard pan under the blades. Ripping 3 to 6 inches works great at mixing the ground and burying residue. Vertical tillage tools work great to like the turbo max.

you need to add some compost to loosen up ground with more organic material - try some different techniques instead of doing to same old - add lime heavier in places that have low ph and also think about cow manure - you can try some small areas to limit risk exposure and tally the numbers in 10 mos after harvest to see if there are any significant differences/roi/tco. for tough box elec probs get box extensions

Cole, I think it's good you're doing the wiring. However, when you aren't sure how to do something, you really need to phone an expert and get their advice. When you're installing an outlet (110v or 220v) in the middle of a run of wire, you should be connecting the input wire and output wire, plus a shorter piece (3-4") of wire together with a wire nut or other approved connector. The other end of the short piece of wire attaches to the outlet. Only one set of wires should be used to connect an outlet. (Only one wire per terminal/screw on the outlet.) I really had to cringe when you showed us how you wired that first 220v outlet.

Cole, not a good theory with the 120volts. the 120v@ 60hz is the right frequency to make your muscles contract and you can't let go if you grab a hot wire. The 220 and higher is more apt to knock you away from it. I really like the progress with the shop.
double depth the box... and get the solder crimp connectors and pigtail those wires
