Two Fish: Collide slowly and harmlessly
All of humanity: WOWOWOWOW
It's a really beautiful sight to see in person. For those wondering, this window is only a small glimpse into this 6.5 million gallon exhibit. The keepers of these rescue whale sharks change the pattern of the water current so that the whale sharks feel and act like they would in an ocean. And no, the glass (which is actually an acrylic resin) won't break. It's almost two feet thick. In this room that have a block of it to show you how thick it really is an talk about the install process.
berlin, radisson blu fish tank bursted in december. made of acrylic glass 😜
When your walking in the halls and you see someone walking towards you, so you start to move right, but you see him going in the same direction as you, so you move the other way but he was thinking the exact same thing so you end up making this awkward collision with a stranger.

Even though that was slightly anticlimactic, that window is HUGE! And I've heard that the tank itself is way bigger! That's a lot of water. Imagine the pressure against that window.
I don’t think that’s part of the actual tank, it’s hard to tell but it’s probably a live feed
It’s glass every side of the tank is viewable, this window is the only one of that size the rest are like peepholes.
The glass is 12 inches thick i believe
There is an info panel next to it. The glass holds back 120 tons of force

Forget about the whale sharks what I find impressive is that huge viewing window. How much pressure is that thing holding back? What is it made of? How big is it? What an amazing feat of engineering.
+Brian W. It's 6.3 million gallons of water! It really is impressive! That glass has to be increadibly thick!
Brian’s right! The window is actually acrylic, much stronger than glass, it’s 2 feet thick!!
David Franklin its acrylic. I forget the size but if I remember correctly it's about 2 or so feet thick. Very sturdy. The sides where there isn't viewing panels its concrete.
Probably an 3 foot thick acrylic or glass
Wow thats thicc!
That aquarium is absolutely stunning. I could look at it for days and just dream away. I didn't know such a thing existed.
We go every 2 weeks. It's amazing. This is ocean Voyager and the is a part you walk under all of these fish and sharks
It is SO much bigger than it looks in this video. That window is pretty small compared to the enormity of that entire tank. I’ve been there several times. They have moving sidewalks that take you through tunnels through the tank, so you’re surrounded by the fish. It’s absolutely amazing!
It does exist, its called the ocean. Get your open water dive certificate and see the real beauty..

No, that was my boyfriend and I.

Finally a theory I can get behind 😂🙌
It should be noted that the Georgia Aquarium bought the Whale sharks from Taiwanese fishermen who intended to butcher and sell them on the fish market. So instead of these beautiful creatures being killed and eaten they are being housed at the top aquarium in the world and are the first of their species to be studied in captivity. Also the tank is massive. I don't know if it's the biggest in the world but it is incredibly impressive.
Edit: okay wow I didnt realize I had a comment with all these likes. Cool. So backstory is I went on a tour at the aquarium where we got to see the tank from the other side, watch them feed the sharks and sea turtles and what not. They litterally have to paddle out in boats to get in position to feed them. The tank is designed in a way that they have the ability to move in novel patterns and directions, i.e. they cant just swim in a circle all day forever, which is good because it allows them to make decisions and stimulates their minds. They feed them the same thing they would eat in the wild. There are places they can go without public observation. It's very cool and very educational. Aquariums like the Georgia aquarium are basically research labs that use the tourism bit to raise money for science and conservation efforts. They're contributing A LOT more to the environment and these species as a whole through research than if they had bought and released the animals.
Plus it raises awareness and educates the public. You can tell people "the whale shark is the biggest fish in the world" and it's just kinda like "okay cool". But when you watch those things swimming above you, 60+ ft long, it inspires you and you grow more complete as a human and you love the Earth more. They're not there for entertainment, they're there for education and research and science and to demonstrate the connection we have with the world.
Sure you could buy it back from a fisherman and release it, but that dosent do any good. Itll probably just get caught again. And you cant even blame the fisherman, hes just trying to feed his family with what he has, no ones getting rich killing whale sharks. By keeping them and learning about them, you can help change policy and learn what measures need to be taken to protect them and preserve them in the wild.
I dont really think the sharks bumping in to each other is a sign of mistreatment or anything like that... they care deeply about these animals and do everything in their power to make sure they are well taken care of and in a stimulating environment.
Josie Brosky not just in the US, it is the biggest in the world.
saxlaxdm10 it holds about 6.3 million gallons of water
saxlaxdm10 they could have just released them back where they belong and not shoved them in a tank ik it’s better than the situation they were in but there were certainly better alternatives

Well, part of the point of an aquarium is that it is a controlled space in which you can admire marine life, so it would be odd for people to pay to go there if they weren't interested in watching the fish
Spoken like someone who doesn't know how much things actually cost. It's expensive to take a family out to ocean-dive, let alone take small kids along to do so, assuming they'd even be comfortable diving as well. Aquariums are a much cheaper alternative.

Obviously it is not big enough if they are colliding with each other. That aquarium looks way overcrowded. I feel bad for laughing at this, since they are probably just too crowded in there...I can't believe they squeezed 4 whale sharks into 1 tank. We're talking fish the length of a school bus here. Or maybe they're just farsighted? Their eyes are like 3 feet apart.
monokhem
So are the fish, to be fair.
monokhem
Well, you see, it becomes a question of sustainability. For example, a common goldfish may get the optimal health benefits from living in a tank of 20 gallons or more. It is very easy and relatively cheap to supply your goldfish with a 20 gallon tank. Of course, housing more goldfish would require a bigger tank. Let's say, 40 gallons. Still doable, of course, but suddenly a lot more to ask. At least it is easy to mimic the natural habitat of a small, hardy, freshwater fish. Every species has it's strengths and weaknesses, after all!
Now, let's say that the optimal tank size for a singular whale shark is a cool 10 million gallons of water. Great! All we need to do is acquire, and continually maintain, that 40 million gallon tank for at least the average natural lifespan of those fish. But...that's expensive! And as a pelagic fish, one the size of a bus, that swims dozens of miles a day, with the tremendous dietary need of literal tons of krill, that healthy natural environment JUST MIGHT be harder to recreate than that of, say, a goldfish, or even a smaller, more sedentary shark.
Wow! It seems that those small sharks aren't NEARLY as suseptible to neglect as those big old whale sharks! Maybe we shouldn't be just as concerned about those goldfish and little slow sharks! Because that would be stupid and show a lack of understanding of the subject at hand.
It's really quite simple. When you think about it.
monokhem
I didn't realize that the Georgian economy was cripplingly dependent on whale shark displays. That's sad and shocking. Quite possibly the real tragedy here.
That "best veterinary care" quip reminds me of the orcas at Sea World. Those vets did the best they could by those animals. But the whales get sick and die very young nonetheless. Because some animals are ill suited for captivity due to their biology. Which was the whole point that you inevitably missed.
Sucks.
Perhaps the whale sharks are fine. Maybe not. Only Georgians are desperate enough to take that chance, I guess. It's going to be devastating for them when the damn sharks eventually die. You must lie awake every night, petrified by the weight of your overwhelming concern.

Beautiful creatures. Oooh a Manta Ray!!! My favorite sea creature! This is an incredibly impressive aquarium, I will definitely have to take my family there at some point
Living creatures that large should never live in a zoo.
@MiekoNeko it's cool that they've been "saved from illegal fishing companies" but you really can't deny he has a point, these fish simply don't belong in captivity and should be released back into the wild, with your logic we should put all whale sharks in tanks to save them from "illegal fishing companies"
@MiekoNeko "the place is humongous" compared to a fish tank, not the ocean.
@memester creamster they probably will either release it back into the wild or found that since it was probably taken young from the fishing company it wouldn’t survive well in the wild. Reasons for it but you know aquariums are evil or something.

MX- How do you know? I Googled and can't find anything. How would a fish market have live whale sharks? Wouldn't they kill them on the fishing boat before arriving at market?
MX France What about the hundreds of other fish in the tank? This made me feel sad for them
MX France-
1 why can't they just be rehabilitated and put back 2 "the only 4 in the world" ever thought that's maybe for a REASON 3 "research + education" wouldnt it be more educational for people to see them in the wild, not stuck in a FISH TANK!?!?!?!? which leads to 4 its nothing compared to the size of the ocean.
monokhem thanks that's kind.
That's a lie, we visited the Georgia Aquarium in 2015 and they said that they only keep them in captivity until they're a specific size and then release them back. They get too big to keep in captivity and they can die due to the stress. The ones in the video aren't fully grown, those are relatively young whale sharks. When we went, there were only 2. I am sure they're going to release those ones soon.
Whale sharks are not supposed to be in aquariums. They thrive in the wild.
+Whitney Thiher (MasterGamegirl1) i understand what you were saying, but these whale sharks were rescued from a fish market in taiwan. They would have been eaten. Now, these 4 whale sharks, the only 4 in captivity in the world, promote research and education for people about whale sharks. And its a giant aquarium.
Is there any chance they will be released in the future? It is a good thing that they were rescued and are being used for research, but living in a tank could severely shorten their life spans. It honestly sucks that people hunt and try to eat such rare and beautiful creatures. And just so you know, I am aware of the illegal shark hunting and finning going on. I just hate to see them in a tank. I know it is large, but there are four of them and it just isn't the same as if they were in the wild. Thank you for responding though. I was unaware of the circumstances that lead them there.
+Whitney Thiher (MasterGamegirl1) i totally appreciate where you are coming from. Just because there is enough room doesn't mean that the animals are happy. I worked with animals at disney world and they seemed to be bored all of the time. And i doubt that they are planning on releasing them ever...

I have actually scuba-dived in the Georgia aquarium with the four whale sharks they have, it was an unforgettable experience.
I first thought for few seconds,"that has got tobe the sharpest HD theatre screen."
not enven enough room to swim..
+any name it goes backwords a lot further, in the aquariums defense, though i still see your point especially for four of them. However, in this case, i think it is important to say that they have absolutely terrible eyesight.
any name no they have room to swim they just can't turn fast enough and don't have good vision
any name This aquarium is flipping huge tbh.
Baryonx 97 imagine you're used to living in the rainforest and then someone comes and puts you into a normal sized bedroom would you still think it's huge?? this is such a terrible thing!
Whale sharks aren't from the rainforest-
Whale shark two: Whale shark one, this is whale shark two.
Whale shark one: This is whale shark one, send it.
Whale shark two: I’m going to need you to change course. Head west instead of southwest. You are on a collision course.
Whale shark one: Negative, increasing speed. It will be a miss.
Whale shark two: Whale shark one. We will collide if you don’t change course. We are going to collide while crossing turn immediately!
Whale shark one: cmon! Cmoooon!!
*Thump*
"Hey! I'm gliding here!."
