    You do realize your buying these various editions support DC’s plan to perpetually f**k Alan Moore over.

      At this point of time the TPB could do that all by itself 😊

      You do realise that More signed a contract right?
      How was DC supposed to know that Watchmen would jump start a collected edition revolution?
      Previous to the publication of Watchmen, there were few collected editions outside of the 'Origins' series by Marvel in the 1970s, and a few smaller publishers collections (like Starblaze's run of Matt Wagner's Mage trio of books in 1987).
      Let's see...you're a part of a big multinational and you have a product that will sell perennially do you keep pumping them out...or capitulate to the request of a disgruntled ex-freelance employee?
      Would you feel 'better' if someone bought this product 2nd hand off of Amazon or Ebay?

      Does Alan Moore not get royalties?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 4 lety +11

      @@haywoco2 Now he's disowned most of the comics he doesn't own the rights to, and asks for his share to be given to his co-creators, as he does for any money that comes from movies etc. He was initially supposed to get the rights back to Watchmen whenever it went out of print, but that never happened and DC never offered to return the rights until too late - then he wouldn't take them back any more, because of all the conditions they had. It's quite a tale, and a sad one.

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 4 lety +16

      @Spencer Welch While we all accept corporate greed and what a faceless company would do with valuable 'property' as almost a scientific truth nowadays, I think it's still OK to classify it as something wrong, or as screwing someone over. Legal and for-profit exploitation, and weaseling out by sticking to the letter of the law and not the spirit of an agreement is loophole maximization, and our individual opinions on the ethics of it can vary.
      With Moore, we can believe he was 'tricked' and gullible, which classifies him as a fool, or at least naive. When he gets wise to it and takes some very radical decisions forgoing literally tens of thousands of dollars in earnings, perhaps millions, we call him cantankerous and mad. I admire his values and principles and him putting his money where his mouth and heart is.
      With Watchmen, he has washed his hands of the book, refusing to even sign copies if fans put them in front of him. Nothing I do with the book now will have any effect on him at all. He was offered the rights back if he would work on other stories and new comics for DC; he refused due to his bad experience with the company. I cannot abandon the work like he has because I love it so much, but that also helps me understand how hard it must have been for him, as co- creator, to do so.

    Woohoo! Congratulations. Before I got the Absolute, this was the version I was gonna splurge on. Then they went ahead and changed the boxset art and I was so put-off by the current one I changed my plans. I have the TDKR boxset and it has a wonderful wraparound art, this would have been a nice companion to it on the shelf otherwise. Sigh.

      I think they did a great job on the TDKR set, including the box art. I don't know what went wrong here - It looks like they were trying to make it appealing to new readers, but it's a 125 dollar box of 12 22-page hardcovers, so I don't know why they would do that. But those standing, backgroundless figures are what I thought the individual volume covers were - can you imagine how bad _that_ would have been?

    I'm having trouble deciding between the absolute, slipcase or deluxe edition of watchmen. The deluxe is the cheapest edition and I just want to ask if the absolute or slipcase version is worth double the money. Cheers. (I would also like to add this is going to be my first time reading the watchmen).

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 2 lety +1

      I'd say if you think you may not like the book, you should see if you can find a used trade, basically the cheapest thing that still allows you to read the story.
      However, if you have a feeling you will like it and don't want to double dip, I'd say the Absolute Edition is hard to fault. The Deluxe does have the colours and the extras of the Absolute (but not the size) so if the price is a big factor, that will not disappoint either.
      The slipcase here is great but no extras, but it does have the lovely chapter structure !
      In short, any way you approach it you will have fun! Good luck!

    So what are your thoughts which one would you buy and why? (TPB, Deluxe, or Absolute)

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 4 lety

      If you could get one of the old TPBs, with the original colours, that's completely worth picking up. Otherwise it would definitely be the Absolute. Even if one needs to save up for it, it's better to upgrade from a TPB to the Absolute than the Deluxe to Absolute. Of course it's all about price and if you're buying to read for the first time or not.

    • @thatoneshortboi
      @thatoneshortboi Před 4 lety +1

      For the Love of Comics Interesting 🤔 so what’s so special about the absolute edition that the TPB or Deluxe do not offer?

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 4 lety +1

      It's just so pretty, haha! In all seriousness, though, the oversized pages alone make it worth it. I think the Deluxe Edition now contains all the extras that were there in the Absolute, so you won't be missing out on any content if you pick that instead. For the Absolute, it's all about the presentation after that, so the value will lie in how you feel about giant pages, thick paper, a slipcase, a ribbon - the overall 'objet d'art' feel of a book - if that helps.

    I've been a fan of your page for years, and I just sifted through your archive. You have three videos on Watchmen but not much else on Alan Moore's other work. Is there any particular reason for this? Would love to see you do a deep dive into From Hell, Swamp Thing run, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, or really any other Moore. He is simply (in my humble opinion) the greatest comic writer of all time.

      Part of the reason is I want to make 'portfolio' videos (more than one each) and i also want to make a Personal Top 10 Alan Moore comics list, and i can't figure out the order or approach.

      I was all about it until a friend shared some pictures and comparisons of the recolouring. Now I'm not sure at all. I don't think I like it much, and since I already own the hardcovers, the oversizing now becomes the only real draw. What do you think of it?

    • @josepholsen7450
      @josepholsen7450 Před 4 lety

      For the Love of Comics I like it, minus the binding issues. I've only ever read the first hardcover, so the recoloring does not bother me. however, some of the recoloring is so vastly different, I'm not sure why they made those choices. like completely different color schemes, not just touch ups

    • @ftloc
      @ftloc  Před 4 lety +1

      Oh I hadn't heard about the binding issues! When buying something like an absolute, that would be a total deal-breaker (isn't awesome production one of the things I'm paying for?)
      This recolouring seems more like the total transformation of the original tone that The Killing Joke did than the less radical adjustments in Watchmen. Swamp Thing being such a hallucination and psychedelic filled work really doesn't need this - some of the panels I saw completely amputate the surreal, and I can't see the story having the same effect. I need a closer look to judge properly, but it's a chunk of change to shell out!

    • @josepholsen7450
      @josepholsen7450 Před 4 lety

      For the Love of Comics yes, I got it half price so I was okay rolling the dice on the binding. the cover is sort of felt textured. I thought about getting the original hardcovers, but even their paper quality is not the best. the colors are still very psychedelic and I think work well. it's just different. it's more horror-leaning, so I do feel it changes the tone of the book. I just can't get my hands on the originals for a good price

      @ftloc  Před rokem

      Valid question about the necessity, but as not everyone can get their hands on the original issues, and the individual chapter structure has a lot to recommend a part by part reading, there's still a little bit of 'value'. In any case, when it comes to special editions and collectors editions, the need is always questionable, not really directed at the general readership. The questions for those interested would be if there's something new and something you can't get otherwise, and is it beautiful. There's a bit of both available here, but if it is worth it or not becomes an individual evaluation after that.
      As for the Moore-DC situation: there was a similar discussion elsewhere in these comments but it seems to me that whatever screwing had to be done is done. Whatever each of us thinks about it, nothing DC does now will do any additional or incremental damage to Mr Moore.
