- The construction of my new walk-in cigar humidor is underway! With my growing collection of cigars, and the prospect of adding some wine, I needed more space… at least that’s what I decided! 😅
So, I contracted with Vigilant Inc, the leader in the construction of high-end walk-in humidors and wine cellars, to design and build the cabinents to the humidor. After my initial design consultarion with Vigilant and the construction of the cabients underway, it is now time to building the room out with a local contractor.
Based in New Hampshire, Vigilant Inc also specialize in the designing of wine cellars. So I thought why just build a walk-in humidor, when you can build a walk-in humidor AND wine cellar!
In addition to updates on the walk-in humidor progress, I have been working on a few design updates to my smoke filtration system as well to improve how effectively it works.

You’re not crazy, I’d love to have a system like that in my house. There’s a way to do things once and leave it, and there’s a way to do things quick and have to come back to fix them. You made the right call doing it the right way first!

Kirby as always great video. It's fantastic to hear that you have set the bar so high for the standards of workmanship in your new walk in humidor and office. I look forward to the livestream or video of yourself, Eddie and Edward. Hopefully Eddie has his new bespoke suit for the occassion though I'm not sure that will be the case.
All looks very exciting Kirby, the adventure continues. I suppose hindsight is a wonder thing, but at least you know now, and further projects you may have in the future and for others this will benefit.

Wow! If I ever come up with a couple worthy cigars, I’ll have to stop by. How epic is that filtration system. Someday I’d love to install something like that in my house, til then I’ll be stuck on my back porch… it’ll be interesting to see how the ventilation stands up to the smell of all that smoke over the next few years.

Amen, Kerby! Do it right the first time. I agree we have no vices other than cigar smoking and it's a lot better than smoking under the vent a hood in the kitchen! LOL I would love to see your smoking area at your office and since I live in Marshall the next time I purchase something from you I will drive up, I would love to see it. Keep up the good work!

Great set-up Kirby. I use simple floor unit air purifiers and upgraded filters in the AC in the summer. During the cooler months its a window fan cross breeze. The humidor is going to be great- I would however reconsider the humidity level from 70 back down to 60-65.

To answer your original question, Yes, you are nuts. But….for all the right reasons. I’m loving the suit and even more; I’m loving this side of you. I can sense the frustration with the contractors in your eyes and voice. Your videos are both entertaining and educational. Between you and the Sahakian’s, I learned how to enjoy a cigar either alone or with company. Davidoff # 2 and the Crand Cru are my favs. Keep up the great work, Kirby. You’re inspiring many!!

Sounds like the needed to Balance the HVAC system correctly. They control the air flow so it's even amounts of CFM coming out of the vents. The wrapping on your duct in your house is mostly to stop condensation from the air temperature difference from outside air vs the air inside your home.
When you started telling the story about the vents, and you mentioned not wanting to deal with it, I thought to myself "they're just vents. Surely this isn't a large problem to be solved...."

Suggestion. You should still wrap / seal the room so that any areas of truss, stud or any other material is sealed up. The foam itself is pretty tight but the wood studs and joists can still absorb / release moisture. Plastic sheeting and the proper tape is cheap and easily applied.
my apologies, I added this comment before continuing with the video. The moisture resistant drywall will help. Make sure all the power receptacles and any other penetrations into the walls are sealed.

As a contractor I can tell you for sure the worst words to hear are “while you’re here” but based on your explanation it seems those hvac issues were pretty minor but definitely needed attention to get things running to the best of their abilities glad your contractor is able to take care of it for you

Certainly an element of trail and error here. Every decision was made with the best available information. But, sadly for me, the “best available” information has consistently been pretty terrible.

As a mechanical engineer and construction project manager; either fire your current PM, or hire a good one and quit trying to manage & direct the design and renovation work yourself. All these headaches, setbacks, changes, and added costs could have been easily avoided....

As an electrical engineer who works in building services alongside mechanical engineers, it is the utmost importance that a house with the facilities that you're installing are looked at by a mechanical engineer. Still not too late, I would get your plans looked at by an engineer before everything is on its final install!

Kirby wants so many things at the same time, and he is right, he wants the room air conditioned, be cleaned, don’t pollute the rest of home, be quiet, energy efficient and budget friendly. Most of the contractors in this business (if not all) can probably satisfy him in 2 or 3 of his wishes. A mechanical engineer, subject matter expert in air conditioning can find a solution for most if not all.

A cigar room is planning in depth not to play golf. Simply because if you're friends are not on the course they can not try to include you! Egg crate vents are not terrible, but you may actually want hexagon defusion vents. They greatly reduce turbulence in airflow remaining very quiet even at high CFM. Cheers

Why not have the air inlets at the bottom of the corners of the room, near the floor, so that the path of the air flow is literally bottom-to-top?
Construction limitations. Dripping air vents down the walls would have added significant complexity and cost.

Kirby what’s your most prized box of cigars in your humidor
Somebody is shoveling B.S. at you. Egg crate is a commodity item. It is bought in large sheets then cut to size. Large sheets in various colors are sitting in big stacks in every major city in the USA. The white, which you are using is the most common, largest stack. What you are calling "vents" are "diffusers." Diffusers have flow ratings for the whistling. Your system has a flow rate. The contractor should have known the original diffusers were going to whistle upon reviewing the plans, long before install. You should not be paying change orders for this additional work. You should get a negative change order for the difference between the louvered diffusers and the egg crate.
