An Interview with RM at Dia Beacon

- In December 2021, the singer RM visited Dia Beacon for the first time. He recently released his first solo album, Indigo, and inspired by what he experienced in our galleries last year, RM approached Dia about shooting a live performance video in front of some of his favorite artists in our collection.
After his performance, we sat down with RM to talk about the impact Dia Beacon had on him, and why it was his dream to shoot his video in our galleries.

I love that despite how clearly he has studied and has well developed thoughts about art, he has never once come off as pretentious when talking about it. He makes it so approachable just by being his natural self and sharing his genuine story and interactions. As well as incorporating it into his music and performance as we've seen here. I've loved following his growing interest in art from when he knew very little, to his first "art crush", and now as an "art influencer"-- a title that still amuses him because he has always been so humble about his role. Thank you for this brief but lovely interview!
this may be a lil weird but can you pls tell me who is his first "art crush" i would like to start my art journey from there
@@fyoself lol that's not weird at all! His first "art crush" wasn't an artist but rather a painting. "The Luncheon" by Monet. He mentions it in his Art Basel Podcast. Look it up because it was a phenomenal interview/podcast. Highly recommend.

i'm always so fascinated by namjoon's choice of words. he's very well spoken. whether it's in his songwriting or when he's answering questions about his life, he's always so eloquent. He’s honestly a poet.
You can see how art plays an important role in RM’s life. He's not just a collector or influencer; art has become as necessary to him as his music and I think this collaboration hits off very well.

Namjoon is so deeply committed to his craft while being inspired by other types of art. It fills me with so much joy hearing him speak 💜
Namjoon is such a deeply intelligent soul, both intellectually and emotionally. From the way he talks you can tell he has a thorough understanding of the artwork and all their contexts, but there's also this tangible passion and almost romantic-like admiration in his voice. He really makes me wanna travel there and experience the space for myself. It would be a completely different level from just seeing it through a screen.
I can actually hear the textures of nature in his music, truly an amazing experience. I need to visit the Dia Beacon and experience what he has experienced.
I loved how namjoon connects art with music. He is an amazing person
this is incredible! it must've meant a lot to him to perform in such a location. the art world has always seemed so intimidating but, through him, a lot of us discovered a newfound, or perhaps hidden, fondness for the visual arts. i am forever grateful for him sharing his experiences with it and i hope it continues to be a source of inspiration, joy, and/or solace for him.
You know when a Musician is very Genuine with his music, because his music will touch your soul and give you reason to keep going.

I wish I understood abstract art like RM does. My dream would be for him to stroll through a museum like Dia Beacon and just describe each piece in detail: how he feels about it, how we should approach interpreting it, how the artist means for us to interact with it, etc. He's the perfect person to make abstract art accessible to people like me who don't have the background to comprehend it on our own.
I've traveled to a number of countries and try to visit museums every city I stay in. I've never had to articulate how or why I enjoy art, and I'm so impressed that RM can so eloquently express how visual art connects to his musical creativity, in English since it is not his native language. I'm also so impressed by how he has intimately woven visual art and his music together in his songs and their musical videos.
I want to see the world through Namjoon's eyes... even just for a day. He talks about things so romantically... I'm so inspired to pay more attention to the little things...
Listening to Namjoon is always so pleasant whether it be about the Art or his Music or about Nature. I can listen to this wise Man talking all day.

I love this man, i don't think i will be able to love anyone the way i love him, the way my heart feels happy everytime i see him, the way i feel safe and comfortable whenever i hear his voice, even if i try my whole life to put it into words i will never be able to describe the way he makes me feel. Plus, the Serras really match the song's refrain of "don't look back" so well too. As you walk through the spiral for the first time there's discomfort that reaches relief but only if you trust it and keep going.
