This scene is so bitter sweet. She finally ended the toxic cycle of being the scape goat for so many situations that weren't her fault. This was probably the most freeing moment she's ever felt since being empress. I feel for her because in the end he only realized it too late, so much so that she was so detached from him that she (SPOILER ALERT: had unfortunately almost lost all of the people that she loved because of her love for him. SPOILER ALERT: I am still in a way glad that she had went on her own terms and that she was able to let herself rest peacefully.
Ruyi handled everything with such poise and grace, but even the most patient person has their breaking point. Ruyi was wayyy too good for that horrible excuse of an emperor.
Even though she never said it, the princess looks truly regretful in this scene. Her whole life she kept thinking that Ruyi is evil and coveted the empress seat. But after Ruyi cut her hair it seems like she realises Ruyi was not the person her mother described. Someone else said this was also the first time she referred to Ruyi as Queen Mother.
All along, the Princess blamed Ruyi for her life problems since Ruyi was sent to be the messenger. And sometimes, it's easier to attack the messenger than the one who sent them. But this was when Princess finally realized Ruyi wasn't the evil Empress she created in her mind, but just another victim of her father's cruel games
He assumed that he held the Empress position over Ruyi’s head and that she could be manipulated into complying by that like all the other women; but he failed to realize that she never wanted to be Empress in the first place. Any other woman would have begged and pleaded not to be deposed because so called power and glory were all they wanted. But Ruyi just wanted Hongli’s love as a husband. Not a man blinded by the position of Emperor.
Emperor thought he was punishing Ruyi for her 'act of madness' but really, he was liberating her. From all the drama and harm that life in the Harem brings. Look how content she was on her way back to the capitol.
What I love about Ruyi was how quiet she was but nonetheless as cunning as everyone else in the palace. She was the kind of person who didn't need to raise her voice and scream to get her point across

Her job as empress but also as his wife is to make sure he has an upstanding reputation and he ruined it for six brothel girls, but when she tried to tell him what was going on she was wrong. Ruyi and maybe 4 other concubines truly loved him, and wanted nothing for the best of him, and he still chose to indulge women who he KNEW were using him.

The only thing that was important to this man-child was how others perceived him and his legacy. He was in love with the idea of being in love. Actually when it comes to the issue of the Cold Palace, it's the one time the Emperor really did the best he could. If he hadn't made the decision to demote her and put her in the Cold Palace, the power of the other harem women and their famlies would have forced his hand to have her executed for the "killing of imperial heirs". He knew she was innocent then because he knew Ruyi would never harm a child, however all the circumstantial evidence and A'Rou betraying her and pointing the finger at her had the rest of the harem out for her blood (well except for the ringleaders, but they were out to get her for other reasons). By placing her in the Cold Palace, he was trying to protect her from being tortured to force an admission of guilt and then a death sentence until he could figure out a way to prove her innocence and point the finger at the true culprit. Was it a great choice? No, but honestly I think he didn't have many options and for this instance, I can't really blame him. All the other times? He's a total d****.
