This is actually even more brilliant than you think! When someone is jealous in these dramas, they're told they smell like vinegar. So when the emperor basically told them all he'd be dunking their food in the vinegar brought by his favorite woman, so he was not only complimenting Ruyi but throwing shade and telling them all that their food would all taste of vinegar.

The cold palace thing, in the end, was really tricky and was one of two moments where the Emperor is slightly capable of being forgiven because a LOT of important and very powerful people were all for just calling it like they saw it without finishing the investigation and Empress Dowager put her foot down and forced the emperor to declare the verdict despite the fact that the Empreror found it sus.
Yes, he is Emperor but the issue is that this was still fairly early in his reign. He needed to consolidate power and everyone knew he had to do that so they worked to quickly put pressure on him to enforce what they wanted while he couldn't do anything about their whinng because Politics are gonna politic. After Hai poisons herself it lets him secretly reopen the investigation with Gu Yu acting on the down low with the information and that's why they're able to implicate A'Rou and then later Gao comes forward with more info.
I heard they were very young in real life…some critics were not satisfied with the age of lead actors here as it gives wrong impression that they were mature enough to handle all palace schemes and pressures
@nehayadav772 That is a really good point, it's easy to forget they were high school kids when they married and college age when these events occurred. Still I think there had to be a better way than this, to leave Ruyi imprisoned for years while the criminals walked free is so wrong.
Not sure which slap I liked more... Jia's or Concubine Mei. Concubine Jia's was calm, but Concubine Mei was about to put the beat down on her...

The emperor would of done nothing and punished ruyi instead. Empress was from a powerful clan so the emperor could not do anything about her deeds. The backlash would of been too severe. That's why he wanted ruyi to be step Empress . She came from a weak clan who could do nothing when he mistreated her.

Why Ruyi and consort Chun did not wearing the round hat?
Consort Wan wasn't wearing one either, I would probably guess in Ruyi's case since she just got out of the cold palace she wanted to be demure and not show off in front of the other concubines; as to why Consort Chun and Consort Wan not wearing one is also a puzzling thing. I wonder if the production didn't have the hats all accounted for; or maybe some were ruined while filming or possibly it's to distinguish each actress on each scene. (just my personal opinion) 💜 Good day!
@BlackVenus Yeah, I'd figured, it would've been nice to see Ruyi with that one, since her Empress crown was so different.
I think it is simply a matter of personal preference. For example, Ruyi wore the round hat exclusively during her time as Empress but Empress Xiaoxian didn't wear it except for the royal banquet.
