  • Small engine repair of armature / timing plate that wobbles up and down. This video was done on a 1956 Evinrude, 15HP outboard engine. Model 15016
This engine was doomed to have problems with out this minor repair. Major damage would have happened to many parts that are hard to come by on this vintage Evinrude. Before and after video, along with detailed video of how to repair this problem

Superb video! When one has the right tools and good guidlines, mechanics is very enjoyable. This makes it fun! My issue is my 1963 15hp gale Fastwins flywheel hash tags doesnt line up with the hash tags on the armature! No matter what I do, I cant get either top or bottom side even close! Also, the access hole in flywheel to adjust the points isn't at all close to the points! It's over the coil. The keyway is on the flywheel correctly but the hole is not over the points to make the adjustment!! I even bought the timing adjustment tool, to see if that would work but, when the tool is lined up with the hashtags, the points are not on the thick part of the cam! I've removed it and examined it probably 18-20 times and I am left scratching my head in absolute bafflement! So I finally just eyeballed each of the two sets of points foot (one at a time of course)on the thickest part of cam and set each to 20. But, the hash tags still don't match up! I haven't tried starting it yet as I am anxious it won't work. Any ideas???

Hash marks and timing tool are for when the points just begin to break open, not later in crankshaft rotation when they reach fully open position.

Great videos Kevin, the way you speak and presentation is really helpful for a newbie like myself.
May I suggest, when zooming in with the camera, use a tripod to stabilize the shots.

I made that same mistake on my '56 evinrude 5.5hp and realized a year later when I went to do a tune up I put it in upside down. Ran great just wobbled enough to make the coil heels to rub a bit on the magnets on the flywheel and made an annoying chatter.

Fixed it for my outboard. I put it on the wrong way because that's what it shows in the manual. Weird.

There’s a wave washer missing that’s sandwiched in between there to pick up the slack and provide tension so the throttle lever stays in the position you set it at

Could be. As I recall I installed it upside down. Fading memories. LOL

No wave washer in these motors. They were used on the three horse motors with the speed control on the front of the motor. These motors have a spring and friction block in the tiller handle to do the same job.

I was about to do the dame mistake on my 5.5 hp, 1955 Johnson that I bought from a roadside flea market. Think it may have been install wrong before I got it.

why would you remove that retainer ring in the first place?

Good question people just like to disassemble things ,LOLL Should of left it alone I agree,LOLL probably just to grease it can be done without taking it off. Glenn
