my dude: MOTORBIKE GPS tracker with sim card! cost like 10$ and have a tiny battery inside with will be automatically charged every time you connect the main lipo. go get one of those. there are some grams and i installed them on all my 4" to 5" drones because its so tiny. almost same as your bluetooth tracker. even main battery disconnects on impact. the tiny lipo will continue send exact GPS location to your phone via app in real time for some hours. and thats like 1 meter accuracy.

You might consider sanding the area you're going to glue, with 200grit sandpaper. Furthermore, a real fillet at the base of the fins would have certainly increase their strength. Finally, a more powerful motor should be used for such a big rocket, indeed, it needs speed to be stable, and that was almost not the case.

Whilst watching the video, it appears that once the vehicle lost its top guide in relation to the launch rail it immediately veered. Maybe next time you launch that particular vehicle, use an additional length of rail (2M to 3M) just to provide an additional split second of guidance to gain trajectory control.
Have you also done any further research into a synchronised multiple engine launch? The vehicle core appears to be large enough to take a triple engine. đŸ€”

Hey James, a quick thought about the tracker. Yes, they are big but that doesn't need to be the case. Off the top of my head, you could check the things network in your area and see how well it's covered. If it is, pick up an ESP32 with lorawan on board and a 6M GPS module and have it transmit data at certain interval to the things network. If you pick up one of the more standard ESP's, you're looking at around 15 grams. There's an ESP32 with a camera and micro SD card which will be an additional 5 grams. I can give a hand if you need(albeit virtually).

Some advice from a rocketeer: Eggtimer Rocketry provides great flight computers and reasonably inexpensive (and very, very tiny!) GPS tracking units for rockets. You can also use their flight computers to fire ejection charges at apogee, which would probably have spared you the nail-biting deployment you guys got.
And if you get the chance, you need to come out to Friends of Amateur Rocketry in California. It's just about the best place in the world for big rockets.

You could build a tracker with an Inav board and a gps unit with an rx attached.
Setup telemetry to your radio and use opentx to log the GPS co-ords.

You could use special fins to make some spin. That should give it more stability.

About those trackers... There's a third option, and that's just installing a dumb radio beacon, and then grabbing a yagi antenna in the field, and looking for it manually by observing the signal strength in different directions.
