  • We had an opportunity to check an item off of the guitar player's bucket list recently. So we headed to Nashville to Blackbird studio to put a Dumble Overdrive Special through its paces. Joey Landreth and Paul Yee were gracious enough with their time to join us and help us capture some great tones. We also had an opportunity to get some time on the new Revv Generator 7-40 MKII. To say that the Torpedo Studio was more than capable of handling these amps would be an understatement. What a great way to check out cabinet and mic combinations without having to waste days/hours in the studio. Check it out, in the comments below, list what other amps you would like to see us pair the Torpedo products with!

    You know those moments when you're listening to someone (or a band) play, and you realise that you have that smile on your face without even realising it? It's called joy, and it only happens when you can hear that "feel". What a pleasure to listen to Joey.

    I've come back to this a hundred times over 3 years. Joey hitting the chords in the chorus at 5:05 just kills me.
    Still my favorite player. Saw him do a solo show in some random backyard in Ontario, no band, best night ever.

      I have a feeling that like some other really talented folks, he just didn't want the costs that come with being in the Nashville machine.
      The singer Courney Jaye decided to go indie after having a major label deal. She talked about how she felt that the label really wanted to push her in a direction that wasn't true to herself. She had the voice and the look, but she's just a little too quirky and dark to really make it as Nashville-ized pop and I think her personality is just too strong. She couldn't do it and walked away.
      Chris Stapleton has made it work, but I think he's the exception, not the rule, and he's got several hits he wrote for other people to make sure his bills are paid, which affords him the freedom to do what he wants.

      cause it's not the 60's anymore , no radio would play his music
      which is sad , this is one of the best guitar players i've ever heard , and i've heard A LOT

      PC160 - Right?! People pee their pants over Bonamassa, but Joey Landreth 'A' comes across in interviews and gear demos as a genuinely nice person. Sincere, and humble. And 'B' the man can flat out PLAY. And I love that he's not just regurgitating the Kings (Albert, B. B., and Freddie) he plays with such creativity and depth. His use of alternate turnings is fantastic. Gushing?...Yes...but the guy deserves every bit of recognition and praise that comes his way.

    Dumbles are definitely amazing amps. You can approximate their sound by using a ZenDrive n front of a and p2p wired fender black face or tweed (with less negative feedback). I have seen Robben Ford play several shows. Believe you me the tone comes from the fingers. He would sound great through a Peavey or Crate amp! lol

    • @kckennedy55
      @kckennedy55 Před 7 lety

      You are absolutely right! I saw Robben Ford in Detroit with the Yellow Jackets. He used a Yamaha SG 2000, and 2 Yamaha GA100 amps. AND he sounded almost the same. I give the difference to maturity.

    @ronfrey5327 Před 6 lety

    Great playing Ive got a 50 watt Dumble head here id like to hear you play slide on it if you get to Texas holler.
    Those amps are very voltage specific the brown box lowers the power usually too high down where the amps were made to run this sweetens them alot if they are voiced say with 70s voicing that mellows out and they sound best at what voltages Dumble voiced each said amp too.. I mean it makes perfect sense to me that after you take all that time and detail to use specific value flame resistant parts which are rated why would you not then also control the rest of the variables such as voltage the amp sees ? So you lower the voltage the amp sees to proper voltage and you dial the sweet spots in..
    If you know what that is as in my case with this 50 watt Dumble I own then you find the sweet spots instantly and that is voltage the amp should see for who is playing it. The brown box is not a variac per say it lowers and only lowers in increments
    where variac one can go over the correct power causing damage. I spied alot of Nashville studios used them so I invested..
    One can re adjust bias if always using at that voltage also as long as its always used in that setting.
    So its essentially foolproof once you set things how it feels and sounds right.
    I will goof with it some dial it in and post some videos of it up need to brush up on my slide work first
    but the overall tone of the amp should sweeten and that extends tube life also... which is essential since tubes are costly especially the good ones.. That box works on Tweed fenders and vintage amps of all sorts also...
    I plan to use that on my ODSR which is a 183 clone with #60 reverb added 100 watt overdrive special with reverb
    which was recently serviced and touched by Dumble the owner of #60 told me my amp was a clone of his and he thought it was to be his amp but in fact Id ordered mine a year prior and mine was the first one with the recent verb added im told that man never got his clones after trusting that individual with his amps... Those clones are no longer being made by that maker
    which is unfortunate but this amp here is not gooped or smurfed so I wrote the voltage chart out and took all the voltages myself and I can build another one if needed... after we got this one we got inside and replaced all the parts which were not Dumble with known Dumble values and parts to make it about 99%..
    I say 99% because one part in 183 was not ever cloned or found so they used the closest value...
    The 50 watt Dumble here is an ultra phonic amp the 100 is a direct clone of 183 only with updated current Dumble spring reverb which consists of relocating the verb to sound best with the 100 watt circuit and to lower noise.
    after waiting a year for that to be made I decided I liked plate verb better with the ods and the SSS amps.
    its only love and money though.....
    what have we learned Dorothy ?

    Personally I don't think SRV sounded any better through the Dumble than a Bassman or twin reverb. Point is, if you learn how to get some good tone out of your hands like SRV, Page, Beck etc. to hell with boutique amps and just get a damned ordinary Twin, Marshall, whatever! You don't need these damned "Holy Grail" nonsense amps and guitars. Joey is even more proof of this, like the comment below says
