Attention citizens! We are hosting a special bonus stream of Stellaris Invicta right now! Check it out on www.twitch.tv/templininstitute
I would watch you live but twitch doesn't work for my rig but honestly I'm more than happy to watch the archives i would probably just heckle you in chat anyhow so it's probably a good thing :)
One thing I would say is that you label it fascist, which it is, however you then mention the Nazis, Italy and Japan, which do fit fascism. However fascism is not synonymous with Naziism of Germany or the ultranationalist of Japan. Fascism is a system of government based on tyrannical control, so by this definition the USSR and China.
Also if you want an example of the extremes of nationalism and militarism going too far is WW1, where the whole of Europe was in a fever of these values and many looked forward to the war.
Also Please in your next Stellaris monthly video please add Galactic maps, please.
Further questions:
Is the GTU warlike in the sense that they are aggressive and expansionist or just jingoistic?
How is the xenophobia in the GTU? Are they okay with aliens that remain peaceful and friendly? Or is all alien life considered scum no matter what?
Do civil liberties exist in the GTU? Is it allowed to criticize the government or make jokes about the High Marshall?
Can alien races visit earth or other planets of the GTU as tourists or merchants, or is there are strict No-xeno-policy?
What do GTU-citizens know about their own history? Is Democracy something that is bashed in GTU-schoolbooks as some dumb utopian idea? How is the Third Reich presented?
Do other alien civilizations know about the Tyrum-attack on earth? Does the GTU keep that a secret? Is it a mystery for others why those humans are so warlike?
Is the one-child-policy still active or was it abolished after discovering other planets and more resources, and in the need of soldiers and pilots?
How "militaristic" is the GTU-society? Are there still free-spirited artists, hippie-communes or poet-clubs or is the whole culture geared towards war and society made to serve the state?
Are comedy movies still made? Generally, are products of art and entertainment from before the attack, even of the very trivial like (Adam Sandler movies) still popular? Do people still play World of Warcraft?
What language and scripture are used? Are other languages and scriptures still used locally or in private?
Where the Prikikiti outraged when they learned that the GTU made plushies and terrariums of them?
"Someone asked me once if I knew the difference between a civilian and a citizen. I know now. A citizen has the courage to make the safety of the human race their personal responsibility." - Johnny Rico
You know that movie was a parody of Fascism and Military Propaganda, right?
I mean, so is the GTU in a way
The Greater Terran Union is one of (if not the) best world governments I've seen in fiction. I feel like your criticism of other people's world building left you equipped to do some of the best world building I've seen. The Greater Terran Union is one of those fictional states which stirs more nationalist feelings than any real one for me, I imagine a lot of people felt like that after watching the prologue. Humanity first.
Jacob Davis I love that it keeps it fair and grounded, this is not a distopia nor a Warhammer empire
Is just a civilisation surviving after near extinction
Honestly i feel the same way i love that how it works is purely based on utalitarian views and efficency in the wake of extinction, i would glady serve the GTU
"HUMANITY FIRST"
*TERRAN INVICTA*
f that we wana movie.
It's one of the few fictional utopias.
I kind of wanted the holy solar empire, but with how great the GTU became, I'm anything but disappointed! Love the series, and I hope it continues on!
I hope Romulus Chuck can forgive you.
@@TemplinInstitute maybe a transition to holly empire once a certain event comes? :D
@@TemplinInstitute You know what? I'll see what i can do. Ya'll have inspired me so far so it's about time I bring my own ideas forth.
>Switzerland inspired socially liberal space autocracy
No words... they should have sent a poet...
Philoslothical Switzerland made politics look cool,
Always thought of the GTU as a kinda darker UNSC.
Interesting comparison as the UNSC was put in charge of government (and not just armed forces) after the Covenant crushed humanity so hard that the previous system of government collapsed.
I mean, there are a lot more comparisons to be made and interesting discussion between the two. But I am rambling enough 😅
Have you seen what O.N.I. has done, they've done things a lot worse than anything the GTU has done yet.
@@harveyweinstein6878
I have seen some of it.
Haven't actually read any books, but I know their place with the Spartan programs and how they create smart AI. Already pretty... problematic...
I can see it.
@@harveyweinstein6878 well oni is supposed to be a secret so mabey the GTU has an oni that is hidden.
Triangle is probably "war-like" because of its pointed shape. It invokes the imagery of a knife, spikes, and other such hazards (triangular and pointy), and thus the feeling of aggressiveness. Since its balanced in all angles, it invokes the sense of stability and sturdiness (much like an army). Combining the two aspects, a balanced triangle would invoke "war-like" feelings.
Pointed upwards, yes.
When the point is down, it represents fertility and plenty.
Which, the GTU technically IS, considering the fact the GTU did eventually take over the entire galaxy
That’s what I like about the triangle symbol for the GTU, it’s dual meaning, and neither are calming for the xenos
I'm impressed with how much thought you put into designing your civilisation. Though with how much time you spend criticising other sci-fi universes it makes sense your's would be pretty good.
I've joined the GTU rifle division and I'm doing my part! Are You?
Would you like to know more?
I worked at a boot camp for the first GTU military alien members.

... Until you run out of shower water because you forgot to turn the tap off
To me the Background of your flag kind of resembles Earth during the Invasion: the Skies are red from all the raging fires charring the ground below. The symbol is a little trickier but I would go for it symbolizing the resistance against the Invaders rising over the years, starting as a small spark of hope, then becoming a bolt of humanity's fierce will to survive.
So the heraldic meaning would be something like:
"As the skies were burning red and the ground turned to dust, the spark to our rebirth has been kindled. We rose up as one voice, repelled those seeking to destroy us. Semper Paratus!"
This is pretty good. This needs to been and added into fluff/propaganda material.
Blood and Soil
Blut und eisen
Soooo, the Galactic Empire, only that it is lead by Thrawn.
Got it.
Hmm, it seems a bit more heavy handed than what Thrawn would do.
The GTU is more of a lighter handed regime lead by Vader.
Thrawn would be a much better emperor than a power hungry sith psychopath like Palpatine.
@@Spartan135 agreed
I love original world building like this, you guys helped motivate me to finally get to writing the worlds i came up with, and putting those original peoples through stellaris like you guys has really helped me to get a more realistic grasp on they'd think, behave and interact.
A potential issue with the tiered citizenship is how requirements are set. Who decides what tier people get elevated to? Even if there are objective, measurable requirements, these are still crafted by subjective humans who have a set of ideas on what values they want to promote and those they consider less valuable.
One could say in a society in arms military capabilities would be more valued. But which ones? For example, is a military officer promoted based on his ability to follow orders or his ability to think independently? A good officer that goes against military doctrine could get sidelined. Or in another case, does a combat leader get promoted more easily than a logistician, even though the latter still play a very vital role? If you build the world up more, I'd be interested to see the military culture of the GTU and what values they privilege over others.
Necro, but it'd probably be results above all else. Ends justify means and all, especially in military matters. Would entirely fit within the mindset of the GTU.
Given the inspiration of 1940’s Germany and the blitzkrieg doctrine that its ground army seems to practice i would imagine that tactical flexibility and localized command would be core tenants of the GTU’s army along with logistics which is crucial for a military like that to operate, as Germany found out during the Ardennes offensive.
An interesting (in character) way that could have been approached, would have been some objective measures (such as performance at work, criminal activity, service to the state...), alongside an independent jury. A jury, would allow vaguer objective measures to be used, whilst people can use a bit of a gut feeling to see if they think that person is really deserving of a higher/lower citizenship tier. For example, if someone had been making mistakes during their citizen service, but had been doing so due to some large personal problems, then a jury could decide to be more lenient in downgrading a citizen's tier, giving them a second chance. The counter would apply as well, as if a citizen performed very well at work, but was clearly only doing it for personal gain, to the detriment of the union, a jury could decide to be less forthcoming in upgrading him.
Furthermore, such a jury system would be in character for the pragmatic GTU, as it is an effective counter to corruption, even if it has democratic origins.
The best part of the Greater Terran union is that it will be the bad guys in most other universes and it is a highly equal society not because they believe in equality but because it works the best.
Wouldn't mind if society was more meritocratic, advantage being about what you know not who you know.
No that will be evil communist socialism!!! It is better to live in a plutocracy democracy where you can vote for some rich person who don't really want to change anything. Any other from of government is evil EVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Stellaris I always play as the "Terran Imperium" (weirdly enough what I'm playing right now). Oddly coincidental.
You are just extremely original, you should be proud of that.
TheLordboki I have a friend and basically all his stellaris games have been The Imperium of Man with slightly different names, all authoritarian xenophobes, sometimes with fanatic spiritualism, and then there’s that one alien empire
That’s the name of my main Stellaris civilization. How do you play yours?
Greater Terran Imperium for me. Xenos almost always purged especially shrooms, not sure if I should enslave mammalians or purge them too.
@@mr.k418 Mine is the Interstellar Terran Commissart
ALL HAIL THE UNION!
indeed
One galaxy one union!
One Human Race, One Unified Planet, One Unified People, One Union!!!
Question: does the gtu have super soldiers? How does it act during war times? Does forcefully recruit or do the people volunteer?
No super soldiers, the GTU isn't too keen on modifying humanity, whether through cybernetics or genetics. Everyone is forced to undergo a few years of military or national service but there remains a core of professionals.
I'm sure we will find an alien race to join that can work as one.
Although no super soldiers that doesn’t mean they don’t have the most intense special forces of all time like spetnaz on steroids
There are super soldiers in Stellaris. Though I think it's a mid to late game tech. So maybe not yet.
@@TemplinInstitute Thanks for that comment. I'm doing a GTU play through and was wondering if those would be in line with them.

Cool that your brought up the idea of our half-direct democracy in Switzerland. There are flaws of course as there are everywhere but it works.
thanks for this series. Its inspired me to create my own human utilitarian utopia set in an epic space opera. Utopia Justifies The Means.
I know it may sound somewhat trite, but it's also greatly rewarding expirience to be Templin's regular viewer. I mean it - guys like you or Spacedock are the definition of quality content - be it fan-content or completly original one.
I honestly hope you guys do more stuff like this, definitely my favourite series of yours
I have been thinking of writing a fiction story, and the GTU really sounds so realistic that I might want to take influences from it for my own factions and governments.
Gotta say, Incoming is my favorite series on this channel. While the others feel too derivative this one always keeps my interest with something I haven considered before.
Keep up the good work and claim the stars for humanity !
I look forward to your updates on the GTU. I'm not really more involved than that but as a passive viewer I enjoy your work. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing! I really liked hearing your thought process.
A lot of work done indeed. Where did you get all that artwork? Is it just from Stellaris?
Question on the old One Child policy: the reason is completely understandable but what happens when someone has twins and such?
flip a coin
Think it could or should be bumped up to two.
Keep in mind, that limit is over now that humans have rebuilt their civilization.
IRL China its actualy a one birth policy. I presume the GTU works the same.
So technically I could just be an octomom and cheat the system.
First up I love the GTU and everything that has transpired so far in Invicta. However with such power always comes competition from the inside with the hot debates over how events transpire i foresee that it is only a matter of time before someone tries to seize the state for themselves be it a young upstart or a career officer viaing for High marshal someone will want what the GTU has "Violence is just human nature".
I love the GTU so much! I just binged all of it! I wish there was more!
This series is just awesome, great work!
As you said, the moment I'm most eager to see is when the Greater Terran Union has to finally decide what to do with the increasing alien populations that live within their territory. They just can't keep them as sla...I mean second class citizens forever, specially if the human population start to gain sympathy for them. I don't see the union even considering to exterminate them, it's not practical and a waste of resources (and yes also unethical), but to fully integrate them would require a deep change in their very culture since so much of their identity revolves around seeing the alien as the enemy. I wonder how the Greater terrain Union will deal with this situation. ;)
You guys are doing a great work with the GTU. It have elements that you see in others galactic civilization but with enough identity to distance itself for the rest of them.
Absolutely love what you've done with the world building here. Especially when explaining the political tensions within the GTU and with the other alien civilisations.
What I'd love to see would be a bit more detail about the hardware and technology that the GTU have developed to expand its inter-stellar empire. For example, the kind of starships the GTU have developed and the technology that they have acquired.
Either way, I love the series and look forward to it every month. Keep it up!
As a potential Sci-Fi writer hoping to be a published author one day, your world building on fictional governments is an inspiration and I my hope is, that one day, one of my factions makes an appearance on your great channel. Thanks for great content!
I see you are treating your creation with the same disciple as you do with other alternate world creations...I am sure you maybe aware the Stellaris too has a alternate world feel to it, but they did make it malleable enough for creative minds to tell their story as they see fit.
Even though ive seen some of the streams of stellaris, im more hook on the narration and the story in general of the gtu. Yalls at temple make it the best audio book to listen too. A story where i feel as if im looking into mankinds future and seeing how himanity has overcome many trials at such a cost yet does so to where humanity will always progress forward.
Cant wait for the next story of the GTU to come out. Keep it up
Keep up the great work at creating a highly interesting world.
I agree with what you said about the symbol on the flag. I think that backstoty was very interesting
When will part 3 of the Greater Terran Union's story be released? Waiting to see when the human's go after the Enemy. This is a great story line, it has grabbed my imagination.
So, I watched the three GTU video before this one and I tought they were a mix of Terran Federation (Starship Troopers) and Soviet Union. Never once i tought they were space fascists.
you add humane aspect pretty well. i can feel the dread and empty feeling as well as regrets and resolve after the sword of terra is used lel. kinda late 1 year haha
Loved hearing your thoughts of the development! I would actually enjoy one of those Prikkiki-Ti Plushies, are they being designed for export or will the GTU keep this now almost historical artefact for themselves?
I like to imagine all this work done by the Templin Institute on their developing setting will eventually become a series of games, pen and paper RPG's and FPRPG in electronic formats. These could be some epic stories, told from a thousand different perspectives.
Man this nation should be shown in a tv series or something its just too good... as long as live action doesnt fuck it up
Flag is amazing and i love it, i find triangles and diamonds or cubes the most warlike shapes
I eagerly await the next episode of Invicta!
Found this series through Skibb and CitywokCityWall's channel, and I have to say I really enjoyed the story.
One of the best scifi I've seen lately. I also loved the backstory of the European and American commissariats. Would have been nice to see the other ones more fleshed out.
Why would the Balkans and Hungary form a different commissariat than the rest or Europe? What makes the Caribbean Commissariat different than the Central America Commissariat?
Also looking forward to see how the Antares Federation ends up doing you have some wonderful world-building already done in that respect.
Hi Templin,
Love the inspiration taken from real world events. Have you read Il Prince?
Thanks,
SeanNaut
I love the GTU. I didn't think they seemed "dictatorial" at all. They did what was needed, and showed guilt at the more harsh things they had to do.
Can you guys do the Terran Republic and the other factions within Planetside 2, maybe even the history of humanity in that game and how the war on auraxis developed
please write more stories involving the GTU anything and everything regarding topics is welcome. Thank you, and have a good time of day.
The GTU reminds me of the Space Humans Govermnent from "Suisei no Gargantia", which even sacrifices everyone who isnt efficient enough
ledo is not really keen on the system. basically its a facist colony in space
Its like a beautiful mix of The UNSC and the Imperium of Man from 40k
SOMEONE MAKE A BOOK OR TV SHOW ABOUT THIS
I NEED IT
I absolutely love this reasoning. The 'doing the right thing for what might be the wrong reasons' is entirely believable. The whole concept is solid as those with little to no drive will remain at a lower tier permanently. They aren't homeless and they'll never starve, but they won't be wasting resources that would be better-utilized on higher-tier citizens. Meanwhile, those who have talent, drive, or both can earn higher tiers for themselves. This is a definite reward system. Everyone knows that they're working towards and whether it's worth their effort. ('If I put in another 5 hours a week, I get an extra 5 minutes of shower times a day, additional food, better quarters, etc.')
The main drawback to a system like this (because no system is perfect) is the tendency for corruption. Those at the top have the authority to STAY at the top perpetually and never let anyone else into their 'ultimate power' club. The addition of an outside factor (in this case, an invasion) solves this problem since corrupt officials understand that if they don't work towards the common good, aliens might come and take away all their toys. There might be a small amount of 'skimming off the top' but this sort of thing is largely unavoidable. As long as the majority of resources go where they belong, all is well.
If you haven't written a novel or screenplay using these same techniques, you should.
When someone wants something, it's often times because it's something they don't have. You are cleared to make the Greater Terran Union want efficiency because fascism is inefficient. Thanks, TV Tropes, you told me about the fascism is inefficient trope. Discrimination can creep into job interviews, so therefore you would use entrance exams prior to all interviews.
I know a little bit about Galaxy building, I edited and contributed for West End Games Star Wars before there was a Star Wars Renaissance. You are doing great work here.
I can't wait to see part 3.
I'd love to see another one of these in the future. Maybe make an alien culture or maybe try a different game, maybe endless space (for a more fantasy edge) or maybe Rimworld (though you'd need more art assets so perhaps not the best choice). Anyway awesome Faction.
Did you note's that the skiron campaigns mirror the first world war. GTU is Germany and Clans are Austria-Hungary.
I am a sucker for this one's backstory
I can watch this video an right after the stream 👌

this could make a really good tv series
The GTU is certainly a place Grand Admiral Thrawn would respect and admire plus he may even serve loyally.
For they encompass a lot of the same values and pragmatism that he embodies to.
You should look into the universe of Alpha Centauri!
wow really creative faction, this could serve as inspiration for a sci fi faction I am designing
I would like to know more about the GTU's military. You know more information about ranks, medals, units, gear, vehicles stuff like that. Maybe you could do a lore video entirely devoted to the Union Military and how it's evolved over time?
I'd really like to, but since we're mostly dependent on art from a variety of sources, it's hard to maintain any type of consistency with that sorta stuff.
@@TemplinInstitute I understand, but even a few vague details would be pretty cool and help flesh out the world a bit more. Especially with all the war the GTU's been waging lately.
just awesome. Where do you get all the fantastic artwork from?

Hey, what'd be the odds of getting a video on Ian Bank's Culture series. The Culture is such an interesting scifi world, and with a (potential) amazon series based on the novels coming out in the next year or so, it'd be great to get people up to speed on that amazing anarcho-socialist space empire of sentient AI ships and the free people who live on them.
3:58 When a real life government is casually included in a list of dystopian fictional governments, you know somethings very bad there.
I love this freakin channel
Thanks for making the Terran Union Greater again!
I was thinking, if you didn't want just one leader the High Marshall, you could have somebody almost like the speaker in the British House of Commons who overlooks things and makes sure things don't get out of hand but doesn't have any other special governing powers.
Would love to read a Greater Terran union book.
I think the reason Triangles are the most warlike shape is because they're basically all of our weapons, from spearheads to ICBMs. Also they look sharp, which is generally a threatening characteristic.
I personally can’t wait until the Union addresses the Wasari, and whether or not they join the same tiers
The Paladin (I don't know what aliens where the first to join) but I feel that if the first aliens where barely starting to get into space they should be allowed to join maybe there culture can help improve the technology of the GTU
Don't kill the ones that they had nothing to do with the attacks, a better choice would have been to let them be, but becouse that's unlikely now then assimilate them and learn what you can from them to Advance
Kael 93 The Wasari were the first ones, the primitive race the GTU took over, but they also served in the Terran Army as well, so I think there presence is a curious question. Also, the Terrans now dead ally could also be an interesting addition as well
Those who have felt death's presence will willingly give their rights as the walls to keep at bay.
Is there anywhere we can see some details of the other 3 proposed empires?
Great video. Marc, it felt like the video had somewhat an apologetic tone - as if you were having to explain/defend your rationale for the concept of GTU. Nothing wrong there and I think this explains well why the things are they way they are.
Cool vid, for some reaaon it reminds me of Cerberus from ME3
How would anyone in the GTU's military get promotings, and what are the different branches of main aspects in there armed forces?
Will we be seeing more of the GTU?
Where did you get the Artwork for the GTU? I saw a few with a GTU flag on buildings. Are they original, or were they created for other realities?
This would make a great manga, anime, or big-budget Amazon/Netflix series.
Is the GTU faction that you two made going to be turned into a mod and added on steam for other people to play around without?
