I am glad you're bringing awareness to this issue. I had to put an aftermarket Xenon HID kit in my car just to be able to safely drive down the highway at night. Considering the price of vehicles, effective lighting should not be on option.

It was not mentioned, but every vehicle on the road must have headlights that comply with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (section 108). There are max and mins for light intensity at specific angles. Headlights are designed for and tested to the standard. What Consumer Reports is asking for is additional performance. Also, the 50 year old evaluator will not see as much as a 23 year old. The study should be transparent with regard to these topics.

Great information. As we age, our vision changes. I highly recommend purchasing or leasing a vehicle with LED headlights and automatic high beams. I personally drive a 2017 Mazda CX-5. The headlight system is incredible. Once again, LED’s are the way to go, even if you have to move up to a more costly trim level.

You should make a video about why car makers use cheap materials causing haziness to headlights during the first three years of use, there should be a standard, that happened to my 2012 Forester...I also have a VW golf 1998 and never had a problem to this day

This video is when an engineer looks at 1 thing and tests it when there are many other factors that should be in the test to simulate real conditions.
    Do the test over with:
    - 50 cars and trucks with the brightest LED lights you can find, point 25 of them on one side of the road and 25 on the other in random locations and one behind you with bright lights in your mirrors.
    - test on hills, valleys, highways that are not perfectly flat.
    - test on new oily pavement.
    - test on old pitted pavement.
    - test on bumpy roads
    - test with fog.
    - finally do it all again with rain.
What you'll realize is that under anything but perfect conditions you can't see well with other cars blinding you with high lumen headlights. When you need to look away from oncoming traffic as the lady suggests at 4:03 because lights are so bright that is a problem. Looking away for 2 seconds is hundreds of feet blindly traveled. Do the tests I mentioned over with 50 older cars/ trucks that have no projection beam LEDs and see what happens. While I do agree that modern bright headlights let you see farther in highway conditions with bad street lights, they are really dangerous in the conditions I mentioned.

  • @heresteven

those bright head lights are a hazard to on coming cars. And are a factor in accidents because the driver's vision only sees the light. People crossing the street are now invisible to the driver. The government needs to impose regulation.

Zion lights blind me when they are coming towards me especially when I want to make a left turn. I still don't know how these passed for safe usage on the roads.

We found the new Nissan Rogue to have adequate headlights at best. However after installing aftermarket LED lights and property aiming them. The lighting was ten × better, and nobody is flashing their lights back.

I cant tell you how many new cars I see without their headlights on because they have bright gauge screens and the have the stupid DRLs on. So they see some light in front of them even though its dim, (usually its a car with a LED DRL strip around the main light housing) and then they are blinded by the screens because they are still set to the daytime setting and they have no rear lights. Why cant all cars just have their lights on all the time so you never have clueless people drive around with no lights on.

    • @koreymayo8884
      @koreymayo8884 Před 4 lety

If the lights are on all the time then the bulbs burn out much faster and some people don't bother to replace bulbs, so then you will still have people driving around without lights on!
