- The ballad, Danny Boy, is one of the first songs that come to mind when speaking of Irish Songs. It was originally written in 1910 to a different tune then the one we know today. Frederic Weatherly, was an English barrister who wrote thousands of songs and had at least fifteen hundred of them published. He was so well known and respected that composers vied to get their hands on his lyrics. The story goes that his American sister-in-law sent him the tune we know today. Margaret, his sister-in-law, heard the tune from Irish immigrants in the Colorado gold mines. Upon hearing it she immediately thought of Fred and his numerous lyrics. She asked for a copy of the music and sent it on to her brother-in-law. Weatherly set the words of Danny Boy to the tune known as Londonderry Air in 1913.
There are various suggestions as to the true meaning of the song. Some have interpreted the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war. Weatherly gave the song to the English opera singer Elsie Grffin, who introduced the song to a wider audience. The first recording was made in 1915 by the German vocalist Ernestine Schumann-Heink.
Danny Boy:
Oh, Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side.
The summer's gone, and all the roses falling,
It's you, it's you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow,
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow,
And I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow,
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so!
But when ye come, and all the flowers are dying,
And I am dead, as dead I well may be,
Ye'll come and find the place where I am lying,
And kneel and say an "Avé" there for me;
And I shall hear, though soft you tread above me,
And all my grave will warmer, sweeter be,
For you will bend and tell me that you love me,
and I shall sleep in peace until you come to me!

Greetings from Namibia.
Thank you!
Weatherly's perfect words to McCurry's perfect melody inspired by Denis O'Hamaaigh's earlier compositions, combined to make a perfect heart-wrenching song at a pivotal time in world history. A fine rendition, thank you. Let us hope that we do not have to send our sons and daughters off to war again as so many times before. Do not be inspired by war mongers.
Thank you
Bravo 👏!!!❤

@@EmeryJBaines Wonderful rendition! Have you ever sung or even heard of another song by Weatherly called “I send thee red red roses”? I’ve only heard it once, in a movie, but can’t find any recordings of it. Thanks
There is no fault to your voice. You can be proud in that and your musical sensibility.
Thank you!
Bravo Maestro... wonderful tone in one of my favourite tunes!.... 😁

So beautiful and touching.
Thank you!
Bravo! A great bass / baritone rendition of Danny Boy - my other favorite baritone rendition of Danny Boy was by Elvis Presley. It was very interesting, and showed superb vocal technique, the way you hit those high notes, and had the vocal flexibility to modulate them with tenderness and sensitivity.
Thank you!
🔥🔥
Thanks!
I've been looking for a song to do for my choir audition today, and I have found it!
Good luck, hope your audition goes well!
@@jamesbierney8826 I didn't get in this year,
because my harmony and memorising skills weren't quite good enough, (not because of the song) but I'll try again next year
My skills wouldn't get me in either, then!
wow 2022
Thank you
Thank god i found this. Every other cover is too high and not bass-ey or rich enough for me
Agreed. It's perfect.

Nice..but where’s the third verse? The truly heartbreaking verse.
Thank you for your very kind words
is that verse in the Fred Weatherly lyrics?
No, there are two verses in the 1913 Frederick Weatherly lyrics.
This is nice, but be sure to listen to Emmet Cahill’s rendition! It’s FANTASTIC. ❤️
Thank you!!!
Not written by Eva Cassidy. Rich version by a man's voice. 11:00 am est
Thank you
the english voice spoils it the song is good but needs to be sung with a irish voice
Thank you for your comment. I don't agree with you but as I was born, educated and continue to live, in Ireland it doesn't apply to me.
i did not intend to hurt your feelings james bierney i sincerely offer you an apology j-c
Thank you, John C. There is nothing to apologise for!
I thought the Irish hated English ballads?
