    • @retsaMinnavoiG
      @retsaMinnavoiG Před 6 měsíci

      @AIuzky Not sure if you've been outside but nature is brutal... most animals in a zoo would be eaten alive at some point in the wild or die from an easily preventable cause.
      Seriously go watch a few of the thousands of videos of animals being eaten alive, it's horrifying.
      Ever heard a bat screeching as a Komodo dragon swallows it whole and you can hear it screeching the entire way down?
      Sure a few smarter species get bored and depressed in a zoo and they shouldn't be there but 99% of the animals in zoo's (good zoos anyway) have a wonderful and happy life.
      Most animals don't come close to being as intelligent and as self aware as humans and have no idea they're 'captive', they just know they have a safe place to live, clean water and daily food plus some entertainment.

      You know, I'm perfectly happy with The Orville. I was worried it would just be Star Trek parody - but it totally isn't. The humour is exactly the sort of stuff I I thought when I learned that Spock had a mating season that drove him mad, or when Kirk battled a slow moving lizard. The jokes just write themselves. The Sci-fi is totally on-point AND it's a well developed soap opera with character arcs that take episodes to develop. It's really everything I want in a sci-fi series at this point - I just hope it gets 3 to 5 more seasons.

    One of my favorite things about this show is that not everything works out for in them at the end. Like ST, even if the main characters live, bad stuff happens to them and not all issues are resolved. In this case, the zoo still exists and there are no plans to ever disband it. If anything the new exhibit (reality tv) will probably make things worse for the live exhibits. The zookeepers will either lessen the amenities provided to them or force bad and stressful stimuli on them to make them as entertaining as the Jersey Shore. It isn’t a good thing for them, but it’s good that this is more than a ST parody like it was portrayed in the commercials. If idiots don’t cancel it, it could be something amazing.

It doesn’t follow a “good guy bad guy” plot line and allows each characters perspectives to equally come out and equally be challenged. It’s stuff like this that made the old Star Trek special. No crew member ever felt _completely_ above one another despite rank and that allowed every word said some merit. It’s something only Star Trek managed to combine with a sense of wonder and adventure. I miss that feeling.

If Discovery had been like this people would have complained that they weren't doing anything new, just recycling old Star Trek plots. Disco's first season wasn't the best, but the second season is off to a good start. Orville is fun, and works as a parody, but as the real thing it would have been utterly disappointing. Jacqueline Morici Issac's species has a very tentative relationship with the Union, based more on curiosity than cooperation. That's the main reason Issac is part of the crew, to further diplomatic relations with the Union, but for Issac's people it's so they can have a better understanding of organic lifeforms. Going to war with the Calabans to rescue a few hundred or even a few thousand captured organics doesn't really do them any favors, and actually just pisses off the only organic species they see as an equal. I wouldn't be surprised if Issac's people did the same thing. The only reason they don't is because they prefer a more scientific approach, observing organics in their "natural state".

      Carter Studying a war could be interesting, but for the Calabans it wouldn't be war, more akin to extermination. Think of it less as Klingons vs Starfleet and more the humans in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. To the Calabans we would be the intelligent apes; smarter than normal sure, but still not seen as equal or even as truly sentient. It would have been pretty easy for us to wipe out the apes had the Simian Flu not decimated the planet. Watching something like that doesn't appeal to Issac's people.

    the issue i have with shows like this is that
    1; their sentience is clearly not above that of their "exhibits" so the comparisson to animals doesn't even make sense, they litterally speak the same language even, (somehow everyone speaks english, how odd)
    2) they try to moralise it but who is to say that society will find the ideology expressed by the protagonists (in general, not just in this episode) will win out especially given how controversial it allready is, they don't care if something makes sense as long as it fits in that framework

    Humans are not the or a higher species. No species is higher or lower than any other. There's no possible metric for such a thing.
    Insects, Arachnids, Fish, Mammals, Reptiles, Birds, Crustaceans, all creatures think and feel as research shows, as it also shows all living beings have subjective experience and the same capability for consciousness we have (can only measure capability, we can't prove consciousness in ourselves, other humans, or other creatures, so capability is the term used).
    Even if no creature thought or felt, they are still living organisms as is all life and should be treated with Love, care and respect, as with all Life too.
    Use harmless repellents to avoid and prevent infestations and gently and carefully move them from your home if they are there. Ironically harmless repellents are also the most effective method and when the proper repellent is used (usually Plants or Oils) and is properly harmless, then it is exactly that.

    Except animals aren't just "technologically inferior" to humans, they're fundamentally "inferior" in the sense that they lack human's concept-formation faculty - for animals it's sensation and perception. Only Man has the capacity for conception. Putting animals in zoos is not the same as putting sentient people in zoos.
    What's being shown here is much more akin to simple imprisonment or slavery - were one, more advanced, group of people captures a more primitive group of people. I mean, I know what they where going for here, some sort of animal rights message, fair enough, but it falls on it's face in execution here the more you think about it. It would have been closer to animals in a zoo if the species outside the cages were radically more advanced then the humans/aliens - something so far beyond us we can't even comprehend their level of consciousness.

    • @googleuser7454
      @googleuser7454 Před 5 lety +3

      When we think about how humans put other humans in zoos, this show does kind of miss the point. It would have been better if the aliens played up their own superiority in their minds, since a truly advanced race would have no need for zoos in the first place

      Mighty Minority Who’s missing the point here?
      The aliens here are not superior, they think they are so they ravel into imprisonments of other species.
      We don’t need zoos anymore, we are sufficiently advanced so we can admire animals in their habitats through documentaries and films. Yet here we are.
