I've worked on several old "boat-anchors" re-capping and some alignments, however I'm still learning and enjoy watching your videos to see what steps you take in your troubleshooting and how you solve the problems by finding them rather than just replacing the boards and calling it a day. Thank you for letting us watch your projects and your explaining in detail what your doing and what your looking for. Well done! 73 from Toronto, Canada.
Couldn't watch this video until today as I was working on slides for our Technician class until late last night...I so wanted to hit play but just couldn't stay up that much later...great that you've had time to get back to the fun rigs, always learn a lot from your troubleshooting procedures. Thanks Buddy! 73 - Dino KL0S
I understand that Dino. As you see it is getting harder to reply to comments. So many these day. Specially on these type of videos. Thanks for watching my friend. 73
Very little online repair info on the FT-101E series rigs. Your vids are excellent. Keep them coming. You're a a great resource, thank you!
Radio Shop, "Buddy "- Nice job on the repairs on the Yaesu FT 101, signal meter & the audio issue. I liked your step thru on audio troubleshooting using schematic & the signal probe to find that faulty chip, and not to sidestep that tuning bearing surgery. A refurbished unit with many years of service to enjoy.Hugh..Chicago...metro
Thanks for the heads up on the tone, for those of us who listen with headphones. Was in NC for 10 day vacation... wanted to take in the Antique radio event in Charlotte... my friends had different ideas. Got to see Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro and Asheville. Strongly considering NC as my retirement home. Really liked it... great people. 73
Amazingly this is the type of vid that keeps me glued to this site..... Needless to say I own one of these famous radios and I'm always glad to see that you are pealing back the layers to understand them..... I'm so glad that you are the one to do it. Thanks buddy....
Thank you Pierre. I have another in for final tube change out and will get to it soon.
Good video Buddy. First rig was a Yeasu Tempo 1 back in 71', so have a soft spot for these old rigs.
Yes remember those well Peter .Many Thanks
Nice to have that AM filter installed Buddy, that's a rare beast to find these days. 73 Doug.
You got that right Doug. I have tossed around the idea of making my own. Thanks for stopping in
Nice stream very informative . I really enjoy your streams .God bless xx
Thanks again Buddy for another informative video! I really enjoy repairing the "old stuff". One thing though is that when you have the S-meter pointing to the 20, it is not S 20, it is S 9 + 20 db over 9. Picky, picky, picky....
Keep up the good work Buddy and 73,
Ski
Ha Ha Fred. Yes that is the correct terminology. You are right. Most of the time I just say "20 over 9" But then my brain does not engage correctly. Thanks
Yes Buddy, I can relate to that and also have noticed that it gets worse with age.
73,
Ski
Thanks for getting back into the FT101 series. I owned one of these radios that I had purchased new around 83/84. I wish that your vids were available back in those day's, i\I would have felt more confident about working on this radio back then. Almost makes me want to go out and by another one. Thanks, and looking forward to your future FT101 series vids. Cheers
Wish you were over here in the UK bud...you are a star sir.
Another old girl almost back in the game thanks nice radio.
Thanks, fun to work on.
very nice video Buddy well done! Thanks for sharing
Very fine work, buddy. Thank you for your vids and sharing your knowledge and your patience.. 73 de Olaf, Cologne, Germany
Great to see my work is enjoyed all the way to Germany. Thank you for taking the time to watch my friend. 73
@@TheRadioShop I watch them often, and i enjoy them. You are part of my watching list ;-) beside Peter, Mike, Mr. Carlson and Dave.
Great video! it was a big help to me sorting out receiver distortion issues on my FT101ZD!
Glad it helped!
And another victory of man against the machine! Well done Buddy! always a pleasure looking at your videos!
Thanks Michel, sometimes machine wins, this time was man.
This was an informative and facinating video. Thank you for showing this.
Very nice job....thank you for sharing your knowledge and skill on these FT-101.
Thank u Douglas for taking the time to watch.
Another good video on the FT-101, Buddy. I used an FT=101EE for several years before it developed a xmit problem in it that nobody seemed to could fix.
Harvey KM4JA in Alabama (but lived in New Bern for 4 years in the 70s)
Thanks Harvey. Have not had one I could not fix yet. I love New Bern. About an hour away. Beautiful historic city.
I had the same problem with my EE several years ago and real life was in the way at the time so instead of fixing it myself I ended up paying to have the entire radio re-capped before the tech realized that it was the audio chip that was bad. I know kids with better soldering skills than what he had and I ended up going over a lot of his work and removing the old solder he just went over when installing the new caps. Might as well have just done it myself. I have never had anyone work on my equipment since.
Great repair video Buddy. Guess I need to build an AF signal tracer now. Thanks for the video. Have a great week.
Thanks B. Signal tracer is a must for every bench.
You're the best, Buddy. Happy you're back and making vids again. I always learn from you. Thanks much.
Thank you very much Eanie
A long but enjoyable instructional video Ihave the same rig that I’m trying to restore, so loads of good information, the ball drive on mine needs stripping and rebuilding too. God bless, Bill G6ATO
Job Well Done,,,, Good to have you back Buddy! Thank You
Thanks Aaron. Good to have the time to put into it.
I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
Much appreciate that. Thanks for watching.
Hi Buddy,
Glad you're back to making videos. Enjoyed this one. Knowledge of this series of radios makes finding solutions a little easier. Will be looking forward to the transmitter repair portion of this radio. 73 WB3BJU
Thank you Donald. This is my favorite rig to work on.
Happy Easter Buddy.
Thanks and same to you.
Excellent job, Buddy. Another home run. Looking forward to more on the FT/FR/FL series of Yaesu gear. Thank you for all your extra efforts to share this with us. Regards, Frank K7RMJ 73
Thanks Frank. These are the type of videos I rather do because I know they will help a lot of folks. Thanks for stopping in.
Buddy you have a lot of catching up to do. Hope you get the time to upload these videos in the near future to get these 'boat anchors' up and runnin' .
Always glad to watch your expertise to diagnose the problems along the way. Kind regards from a viewer in the UK.
Thanks Andy for watching all the way from the great UK. So much to do, so little time.
Glad to see you back.
thanks again for your 101 videos,, love learning about my radio.
You are very welcome
Thank you so much for your video I still have a 101e with cb band crystal in it but hasn't been used for about 10 years.
I especially enjoy the videos you do on the classic 101 and 520 era radios but particularly the level of detail you include - which is essential for many learning their way. You also show the fault detection process which is so interesting. I now feel I must support your channel through patreon as I get a lot from your videos. I'm actively looking for a 101B or E but they are rarely available in VK for reasonable prices. 73 Vk5LTD
Thanks Christopher for those kind words. I am pleased that you are getting something from these videos. I try and teach in a way that all will understand without throwing lots of technical stuff at the viewer. This is the way I was taught (by myself) and it helped in a great way. Those rigs can get a bit pricey, that I do understand. Thanks again for watching.
Hi, Great to see 101 series back, thanks.
I've been missing your 101 great videos. I learn a LOT. Thank you!!
Thanks for this Buddy, really enjoy what you do and good information
Hey buddy, great video as always. Your videos made me take the leap to try fixing my first major piece of equipment (done lots of minor things like cb radios and such). I got my hands on a Sencore SC61 for a song off of craigslist and I fixed it up and put it back into service. The channel B felt like it had chewing gum in it and it desperately needed a calibration, so I went through and cleaned every switch and contact until I got channel b back. Then I calibrated it according to the service manual I found online. Now I own my very first oscilloscope! YAYA!
Another great repair, I enjoyed this video, keep up the great work!
Thanks Bill. Glad you enjoyed it my friend.
Great video again, thank you very much i allways enjoy them very much.
I have 2 FT-101's, 1 is an early model and one that is just prior to the B model but has the Noise Blanker. I will be keeping the 6JS6's but intend to change the front end and mixers to doubly balanced ones!
As usual..great instructive video, thank you for taking the time to explain
How things are repaired and the thought processes that lead you to decide where the faults lie.
It's invaluable..73 G4FMO
Thank you very much colin. I only wish I could do more.
Thank you so much for getting back to the FT-101 series. I have 3 of those radios here and use them at lest once a week. I love to keep them in good running order and your videos on repairs helps me obtain the best results. Thank again Buddy!
Thank you very much Lyle. I think the 101 videos is what brought lots of folks to my channel. I have many of these to work through. Thanks for watching.
I always love watching your work sir.
great job - really enjoyed this as always - many thanks for sharing your skills with us...
Many thanks for stopping in my friend.
Buddy I really appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos. I really enjoy them. Thank you for all that you do for the radio community. Once again thank you.
Thank you very much for your kind words Eric. I really enjoy these types of repairs. just wish I had more time to devote to it because I love sharing.
I was so interested to see everything that was involved - thank you very very much for making this video sir. It made my day - I look forward to the next stage. Thank you.
Alright Buddy, more 101 stuff lol! Hope all is well, pretty nasty weather out today. 73
Thanks. Lot of of rain here. Doing good and hope you are. Thanks for stopping in.
Buddy been waiting for a Yaesu FT101 series to continue now for 3 years lol ... but I know you're busy and swamped, so I guess I'll take this as a continuation! But let me tell you, a series on these radios is very helpful with all your knowledge. Hope you keep it up. We love you no matter what Buddy!
I have a Ten-Tec Omni D on the bench right now that had that same VFO issue. I ended up getting a kit from TT a few years ago and just now got around to doing it. Of course it's also getting a recap while I'm at it. You, Mike and a few others have taught me a LOT in the last few years.
I really enjoyed the videos you put out on the 101 e it expired me to get one I've been working on it for a year-and-a-half now
Thanks David. How is the progress coming along?
@@TheRadioShop it was a basket case broken knobs vfo not working a lot of work lot of rust nicotine environment it is up and running I've got 80 watt so far I know the tubes are weak
Great work Buddy! Enjoyed it! ~Jack, VEG
Maybe the 101 community will finally get the alignment videos they have been begging for. If not we still like his videos.
Will be showing the alignment. Plus the hidden stuff the books do not tell you. Thanks for watching
Great video!, really liked it how you took apart the VFO knob, I have an external VFO but need a schematic for it , do you know where I can find one ??? Thanks Paul
Great video , Thanks for posting it up .... Regards from Gw0wvl in Wales 👍
I will have to check but I think I have one or two "extra" B models laying around somewhere. Not sure I have any extra plain 101's.
Hi Mike. Thanks, let me know what you find.
Buddy, take it slower, don't make your self ill , don't take so much on.
Best regards !Carl.
Thanks Carl. Yes I am slowing down on the take ins. Can not do but so much here. I have plenty of my own gear to make videos for the next several years.
Educational production,a lot of top tips,Colin G1PGI
hello , thank you for the very good indepth vedio.
Thanks for watching Peter
@@TheRadioShop thats okay im a big fan of yaesu ft-101 radios as i have two.
Thank You for your Video's and the time it takes to explain everything,I have the Yaesu FT101ZD that the previous owner had refurbished in the US and it works great, love the sensitive receive.73 DW7NIB
Thanks for the comment.
Nice repair, Buddy! You and Mr. Carlson have inspired me to try my hand at a small restoration of a Swan 500C and matching power supply. Wish me luck! BTW, and no fault of your own, I wonder if the receive audio quality you repaired is just the way this rig sounds? Frankly, it sucks. It's tinny and clipped (gritty). It's orders of magnitude better than when it came in, but again, if that's the normal audio, I can't understand anyone's allegiance to the receiver in this rig. :-)
Glad I found you. MAN - I need your services. I have 4-5 FT101's that could use a friendly touch and a helping hand to fix them.
Sounds like you collect them also! One day in the future I may be caught up.
20:35 What makes some of these older radios give out that varying tone when you get close to dialing in?
I heard a 1950's ham radio a while back on ytube that sounded absolutely amazing!
27:11 is awesome!
Hi Buddy, thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience, it's much appreciated. 73 de Alan G0NFY Sheffield, UK
Hi to another UK viewer Alan. Thanks for watching.
Yeah, that VFO has a ghost. 👻👻👻
LOL
you can always get ball bearings at a bike shop. Bring in a sample.
Quick question, what is the lubricant you used on the reduction gearing?
Another great video Bud, thank you so much! I love the FT101 series and have a few if these in the queue for repair and restoration. Thank you for all you do for the community!
Buddy I have a FT-101 E that has low receive on all bands except 80m.
Due to you having the best knowledge/experience on the Yeasu brand. Can you do a video on how to bring it up. I have done alot of research around the country/world. Can't seem to find anyone that knows what their doing except you. That's why I'm a subscriber to you're channel.
Would definitely appreciate it if you would do a video on how to fix this problem.
Hi there. I've loved watching your series on the FT101EE.
I have one of these set and it's now working again.
My next project is a Trio TS-510. That I've had here for over a year.
Have you worked on one of these.?
73's.
Paul G0MIH.
Thank you for FT-101 Video, I have acquired one and watching these videos to see what I may have to do. de VA3NIE
Thanks David, I hope you watched my older videos on these.
Iv owned one from the 80's still use it today mainly on 160mtr band with same tubes still puts out over 100watts , ALL THESE rigs MUST have the driver to final coupling cap changed as they will kill the finals due to leakage most other caps not so bad . please just change the driver to op tube cap on all yaesu radio's. thanx for vid
The race you removed looked like it had dents in it.
Inside was smooth.

Must have been the lighting. 🤔
Hello, I enjoy watching your videos working on the Yaesu FT 101s! What I would like to know what is your procedure for customer repairs. I have a 101EX that I bought off of eBay, the radio is in EXCELLENT condition, I would like to get it repaired?
Hi, please, i have an old and functional Yaesu FT-901DM and i will do the capacitor replacement, general cleaning and i need to know how to clean the variable capacitors! Do you have any more tips for maintaining the 901? Best regards
Buddy my FT101EX preselector peaks nicely on every band except 40m. Can you suggest a video for this?
I forgot to state the problem with the Yaesu FT101EX: the radio has no sound? I also would like to get it realigned. Thanks
Could it have been a noisy/poorly soldered connection to the audio amp chip or a dodgy trace leading to it on the board?
Thanks ! If I was to replace the 80 pf 1000 volt cap, what Mouser part would I order ? Is there an audio [both transmit & receive] mod to improve the audio ?
Use a silver dip capacitor for that. Mouser part number CDV30EH820JO3. But much cheaper on eBay. There re many mods out there. Check on the Fax Tango web site. Thanks
@@TheRadioShop mousers is rated at 1kv
hello, I have a sommerkamp ft277 which would need a general check and realignment, I have two new power tubes and the driver lamp, can you tell me where you are? and how to send you my device, I live in France in Seine et Marne. thank you
Hello from Canada.
I have a FT 101 277 SSB with no audio sound or any S meter dB on a good antenna. Would you know what has caused this?
Thanks
George
Does the tone generator work? You can start with the fuse lamp.
@@TheRadioShop hi, no the tone gen does not seem to work, no sound at all? The fuse lamp looks ok? No light on, do you know what I could replace it with? Thanks in advance, George, Alberta Canada.
The service manual says to set the S meter at 25db over 9 with 50UV signal level which is -73dbm, but you set the S meter to 9 db at -73dbm. Which is the correct way to do it?
That is correct Alex, Use what the SM says.
What's that diesel tractor type sound?
Can't find 80 or 82 pf mica at 2kv
Consider buying an ultrasonic cleaner. Useful... maybe something to FIX?
What’s your call? I have several AN214’s I’ll send you 2.
Hi Bob. kc4umo. Good on qrz. Also you can click the show more tab for my info. Much appreciated. Drop me an email for discussion. Thanks.
The Radio Shop it Will be in the mail tomorrow
The Radio Shop Did the AN214’s arrive ok?
I CANT BELIEVE YOU HAVE THE TIME TO ANSWER MOST OF THE COMMENTS. I WILL NOT EXPLAIN TOO MUCH OF MY EXPERIENCE IN ELECTRONICS OR HISTORY IN IT JUST YO TELL YOU ITS BEEN FOR A LONG TIME. SEMI RETIRED. I JUST WONDERED IF ITS WORTH REPAIRING THESE ITEMS ANYMORE. IS IT SENTIMENTAL REASONS. EVERYTHING NOWADAYS IS SURFACE MOUNT TECHNOLOGY . I SEE YOU HAVE MOST OF THE ELECTRONIC TEST EQUIPMENT TO USE. NOT EVERYONE HAS THE POCKET BOOK TOO BUY OR REPAIR THEM FOR USE. SOMETIMES ITS LESS EXPENSIVE AND CONVENIENT WITH LESS TIME INVOLVED JUST TO REPLACE THE AUDIO CHIP IF YOU KNOW ITS A COMMON PROBLEM. I HAVE WORKED WITH RADAR EQUIPMENT IN THE MILITARY AND NOT IN THE FIELD OF TRANSMITTERS AND RECEIVERS. REMEMBER ITS EASIER AND FASTER TO USE OTHER EQUIPMENT TO TEST CAPACITORS EVEN THOUGH I APPRECIATE USING MORE UP TO DATE EQUIPMENT. CONGRATS ON REPAIRING THIS UNIT. ITS ALWAYS REWARDING AND SATISFYING TO REPAIR OLD EQUIPMENT LIKE OLD AM ANTIQUE RADIOS. BEST WISHES AND GOD BLESS.
