    This series was originally called “Alcoa Presents” . The name was changed when it went into syndication. It aired about 1959 to 1960 I believe. I was a big fan of the series back then. Thanks for posting these episodes.

      Yes . . . and (as I've said elsewhere) I think the generic "Alcoa Presents" title is one reason that OSB never developed the widespread social recognition and pop status that the "The Twilight Zone" series came to have. The phrase "One Step Beyond" never got a chance to become a catchphrase in every day life. Example: Your wife says something emotional or convoluted (?) "I think you've gone 'One Step Beyond" with that, Susan" . . . never happened.

    Really enjoying watching these again! Much thanks for sharing them with us.... I have a hard time understanding why the TV show producers of today can’t use the formula for One Step Beyond and create something as worth watching as these are! Creative writers and good, sometimes great acting, seem to be the main ingredients which makes spending bazillions of dollars on sets/costumes/effects unnecessary! I dunno. Seems doable again. I guess Black Mirror is close, but I’m thinking more about a series for regular TV channels. Maybe someday. The math is there waiting...

    • @one-step-beyond-1959
      @one-step-beyond-1959  Před 6 lety +3

      I think the issue is simply that the sensibility of today's society is not the same as that of the 1950s. You couldn't find people who think and feel and act the way people did . . . in order to write and produce these episodes. And then there wouldn't be the equivalent people . . . to watch them. That may sound a truism, but it's actually more profound than it maybe seems at first consideration . . .

    @19:09 "... of the FRANKFURTER MORGENZEITUNG" ("morning paper"). Nice attempt at authenticity, but there never existed such a newspaper. In the 1860s (sic), there was a FRANKFURTER ZEITUNG which, after a partially turbulent history, in the late 1940s became the FRANKFURTER ALLGEMEINE - ZEITUNG FÜR DEUTSCHLAND, together with the New York Times and the London Times ranking among the best daily newspapers worldwide.
    After WWII, there have been a relatively short-lived FRANKFURTER NACHTAUSGABE ("night edition") and a ditto. FRANKFURTER MORGENPOST ("morning post").
    As to OSB: Yet another nice discovery here on YT, and thanks for the upload.
    So far, I only knew THE AVENGERS, with Diana Rigg and Patrick MacNee.

    It was almost scary without being so. Only the actress seemed genuinely frightened by the disembodied child's voice she heard. She really communicated that fear. This supposedly French woman sounded more German to me than the Germans. But maybe that's just me. Isn't the actress actually Italian? Until she switched to a modified 18th century pompadour, her hairstyle was more 1961 than 1943. Also the couple of band members who wore glasses had thick, dark, 1960s frames instead of 1940s wire frames. Nice touch that the German general is never seen in a uniform because he goes straight from his dressing gown to his 18th century costume. Not sure why that's a nice touch except that it must have helped the wardrobe department save on giving nearly every cast member a uniform, and no doubt the fanciest would have gone to the general.

I'm curious, and don't know if anyone can answer this question, but I see that many of these were uploaded after broadcast (likely on Sci-Fi Channel?) -- does anyone know if, because of contemporary ad-time requirements, any content was cut from these?

      @Gard Goldsmith: All the season 1 videos are complete at 25 minutes (because they came out on DVD). Any other video less than 25 minutes . . . is a version that was cut for syndication. Some that are 24 minutes (or so) are only missing an episode preview (as part of the prologue), following week preview (as part of the epilogue), or credits and not a part of the main story . . .

    Andre Morell played Watson against Peter Cushing's Holmes in the Hammer version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles". The sergeant, Walter Gotell played a heavy in "From Russia With Love" and then a Russian General in "They Spy Who Loved Me".

      I don't know why your comment reminds me of it . . . but a lot of the quality of OSB is due to the fact that it had a consistent dramatic subject, a consistent director and cinematographer, a consistent host, and consistent musical composer. This is really accomplished stuff . . .

    Every rose has it's thorn... Not a great episode but thanks for uploading. I can't deny I enjoyed it, despite the stereotypical characters. Did Franz Dietrich really exist to report what he experienced? Quien sabe or...Wer wisst?

      @one-step-beyond-1959  Před 7 lety +7

      Yes, I've commented elsewhere about OSB episodes with Nazi characters. 60 years after the fact . . . they too often seem stereotypical to us. But when this episode first aired, it was only 15 years after the War and was still topical, I guess . . .

    • @alfredagain
      @alfredagain Před 7 lety +5

      My thoughts too. With the War fresh in the minds of many people at this time, is this as accurate a portrayal of a Nazi tyrant as it gets, even if it is like something out of the Sgt. Fury comics? In any event, I found him quite comical, blustering about, dressed in 1788 clothing, sporting a 1943 gun.
