  • I was really not happy with the oil consumption problem with the XR150L, despite people saying it was normal and to just keep dumping in oil every ride. So I decided to look into it further. Here's what I found.

      I 100% agree, the title should be changed to reflect the good fix... I have a riding buddy that was looking for a good reason on his oil use, and stumbled across this randomly.. We would have found/fixed the issue much sooner if the title said "XR150L Oil Comsumption Fix" or something to that effect :) Either way though, GREAT video, and your out there hammering that 150L WAY faster than I have seen it done before! Keep it up!!!!

    We have had this carburetor fed xr150 until 2008 here in Brazil. Ive implemented this hose loop suggestion in mine (2008) and can even point out another advantage: after hours of travelling in heavy rain, water gets into the airbox and from there into the engine, but this loop prevents it from happening.

    Brother the breather tube hose is set up almost the same on every zongshein Honda clone I’ve seen. All those “enduros” with the cb or cg clone motors out there. I’ve had people bring their bikes to me struggling to start because their air boxes are full of oil 🤦‍♂️oh well. It’s always an easy enough fix. I’m glad you got it sorted out. Keep up the good work Gabe. The new XR content is awesome. I’m about to grab me one up and hit the TaT like I did my Hawk.

    In Brazil this bike has been sold for a long time, it's called Bros 125/150, we took the old ones and rode the enduro, we put the fairings and seat from the CRF 230, it's basically the same frame, and we have a lot of kits for the engine, mine It has a 70mm kit with camshaft and slightly worked head ducts, it's already a lot of fun, it has around 220cc, now I'm looking to put 21 and 18 rims... just the basics... but it's very common to see these bikes with forks from other motorcycles (XRE 300) and monoshock (Falcon 400) to have more suspension travel... it's the best value for money here...

      I used a single 2 ft length of hose that was 1/2 in inner diameter. You will need a ring clamp on the engine side because it's actually slightly smaller in diameter. I reused the clamp on the airbox side. You end up with a long loop that goes high. So far, so good, no leaks and no oil use.

    I owned one of these in The Philippines a few years ago. The first thing that is necessary is to put a larger main jet in carby. I found the motor running way too lean as stock, causing the bike to run quite hot. Also the best mod I did was put a larger sprocket on the rear........... this was a massive difference and immediately felt great.

      I own one in the Philippines now. I did the very popular mod of swapping in the PZ27 carb ($7) from the TMX155. No more cold start issues. I swapped the fuel screw for one that requires no tools. It took some fiddling and testing to get the smooth throttle response back. I kept a close eye on the plug to verify if it was ric/lean/normal. I run Petron 20/50 4T oil for the hot climate here.

  • @RobertDrinkrow
    @RobertDrinkrow Před 2 měsíci

    The best fix is the breather delete kit from taco moto combined with the uni filter from Rottweiler. You can run the silicone tube up above the engine toward the front of the bike and there’s a pocket in between the tank and frame that fits the filter perfectly. Running crankcase breathers into the air box vents dirty and hot air into the engine, it’s not good for it.
    Also changing the jetting will help. Running in a lean condition can and will burn oil faster.

      It's not just this bike they messed up. The pioneer 700 side by side has a horrendous breather pipe setup. The pipe just rests against the side of the air filter, and is angled down slightly towards the engine, so any dirt that accumulates on the air filter, just enters the pipe & rolls down it into the engine. So many of them have been dusted.

      Hate to say it, but it's most likely rings. I had the same problem on mine and desperately wanted it to be something else. Once I took apart the top end it was painfully obvious. Make sure you have the factory catch can installed. If you do, and there are no blockages in the lines, you definitely have worn rings and/or a worn cylinder. The previous owner of my bike ran it with a gaping hole in the airbox past the air filter. I got tired of adding oil all the time and the occasional embarrassing puff of smoke on decel. All in all, I had about $1000 in parts once everything was finished.

    • @drewsXR650L
      @drewsXR650L Před 9 měsíci

      Very well could be, no catch can installed currently but extra long tube going from breather to airbox. Also plenty of power and no smoke while riding or startup. Currently about 25K miles on current piston % rings, changed them first time at 25K miles going for a rebuild at 50K miles. Someone mentinoed that the bike has a tight ring tollerence to begin with causing issue when the bike runs hot scratching up the cylinder and causing oil blow by. Idk maybe need to figure out a good oil to run for highway. I use 10w40 with lucas oil stabil, thinking of using 20w50@@krp-xe3hw

Decided it was good after 700 miles of not seeing any movement at all in the oil level. The unpaid interns that cobbled this design together did not turn out to be a cost effective solution, as Honda is already rebuilding engines under warranty after people fry them because of this piece of hose that is too short.

      Yes you can see oil in the clear hose, you can even see it collecting at the bottom in this video. I haven't identified exactly when the oil makes its way into the hose but it doesn't happen by RPM alone. You can hold it to the limiter for several seconds and not see any oil go up in there, but riding around town and looking down at it at every stop light, you'll see that it's nice and wet in there. Perhaps it slings just right at certain transmission shaft speeds or something, idk... I'll leave it up to someone else to investigate the why, I just want to ride now that my bike is fixed lol

    Just my 2c worth, it may be worth shoving some sort of strainer up into the vertical section of the pipe before the turn to give the oil; A: more of a restriction, and B: more surface area to condense onto (while still allowing airflow). Maybe steel wool or mesh or something of the like, similar to what I've seen in OEM airboxes on bigger bikes.

    Judging by the terrain I'd guess you don't clean the air filter after every ride getting dirt in the rings.
