I am getting conflicting information about cork vs rubber backed Vinyl Core flooring needing an underlayment. I will be installing a 6.5mm rigid core plank with Cork back over 800 sq ft of tile and I would like to avoid putting underlayment if it is not necessary. I see you installed a cork back right over tile with grout lines thicker than 1/4 wide. Your comments in the video around the core backing answered my question around needing to float a filler to avoid translation of grout lines over time. I would not expect grout lines to translate through a thicker core floor as they would a flimsy vinyl product. This is the answer I have been searching for. I find your videos very informative and am grateful for the time you take in explaining everything. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for making these videos. I always wanted to know how to do this kind of carpentry / home renovation stuff, but didn't have anyone to teach me exactly what to do. I envied people who learned this kind of stuff from their dads. I even went to carpentry school, but never got to learn any of these types of details. Watching your videos gives me such a great sense of relief, I imagine this is just like what I'd have learned from my Dad if he was a carpenter. Jeff, you're amazing! Helped me a lot when I just got here in USA.
As a professional installer now, I recommend the people get a mixed pattern to lay the lines (different from that you used on the video - with a lot of "H" in the lines).
And yes, doorjambs are the worst part for an installer, but you could install the piece easily between these doorjambs using your tapping block and a pull bar.
It's impossible just if the piece needs to cover the 2 areas with a "C" shape.
Not agreed with all information in the video but you're excellent as always. Thanks for teaching us.

I am a sales person for flooring, vinyl plank, laminate, carpet, tile, etc. I have installed vinyl plank and laminate before. Also, I actually build displays for the flooring I sell. I will say this, you pay for what you get. The more expensive the plank, the easier it is to put together and the better quality you are going to get. For example, his flooring tells you how many feet you can go before you need a transition, all flooring is different. Make sure you read the box on any flooring you are thinking of getting, that is information right from the manufacturer and it usually tells you all about the flooring. For example, length before a transition, whether it's three-seasons ready, maximum tempatures, etc. Do your research on any flooring and the methods of installation before you buy, it will save you lots of time and money. I have ran into many people that are mad and they say vinyl plank is junk but when I ask what happened, it usually is because they got into a hurry and didn't properly install the flooring. And if you aren't sure you are doing something right, ask questions, watch videos like this, Jeff is pretty good at what he does and has quite a few great tips on every project you are thinking of doing.

Home Depot’s Lifeproof works like a charm over tile. Renovated a basement that was mostly vinyl tiles except for a laundry room which had porcelain tile. Didn’t want to try to bust it up. Lifeproof is very stable over the porcelain and contributes a lot, for a relatively modest price, to the overall look. My one complaint with Lifeproof is that the tongues are not the strongest and will break off if you’re not careful or try to reposition it. I put Pergo on the first floor which has a more refined look than Lifeproof at a similar price. But no way was I going to put Pergo in the basement because of its . They each have their quirks.

Awesome video! One thing to point out about going directly over tile with a SPC core is to make sure the brand you bought will maintain the warranty if you go over a tile floor without patching first. Majority of Luxury Vinyl Planks with a SPC Core still require you to do a light patch over the entire tile floor for 2 main reasons: 1. The grout line CAN transfer through a SPC core it just takes a much longer time for it to happen 2. Most Tile floor over the years becomes slightly uneven and cracking which could cause structural issues within the floor which a lot of manufactures wont honour their warranty if the floor underneath isn't is really really good condition. But that being said, a light patch over a tile floor only takes a few minutes to do and a few hours to dry depending on how deep the grout likes are so it can still be done in an afternoon. Been an installer for many years and have also worked along side multiple reps that handle insurance claims for manufactures and these are the 2 main things i see often

Agreed I have 7+ years as a floor installer, always skim coat the tile floor with feather finish. I like to use a floor bonding primer (diluted) mixed with the feather finish cuts drying time significantly and increases strength of the leveling.

I'm a fan of not cutting 1/2 or 1/3 plank but using the run's end cutoff as the start of a new row (if at least a quarter, or I'll cut a third), this way you don't get those artificial matching seam lines you have, but more irregular.

That works until you find yourself in a room that’s only 1 or 2 inches short of 3 planks, for example. The look of every plank being only an inch apart is awful. I ran into this issue recently and you end up just having to cut a new starter piece every so often when you run out of cut off ends that will look good.

You said people watch videos that give "bad information" and you didn't read the directions! NUMBER ONE TIP: READ THE BOX! One tip you might like. In the doorway you attached the reducer to the vinyl, if you have a toilet overflow the water will run right under your floor. I suggest you make a "dam" with pure silicone calk and attach the reducer with that calk. F&D has colored silicone calk to match the floor if you need to fill in that small gap around the door jamb.

Use blue painters tape on the bottom of the door before using the saw. Most saws have an aluminum base and leave black marks on the door paint. Using a 4’ clamp can help you make a straight cut

One thing, not as happy as thought as installers (didn’t do all myself, as was an entire 1700 ft² house and doing other projects, but ended up chipping top layer in many places, and even had 2 - 4 planks crack (do know why, as not level for slab in grade and installers forgot to add self leveler 🤦🏼), so yeah, lol

No grinding or prepping the tile joints before install? Lvp floors are failing across the states. Either from cupping or separating. Waterproof laminate is the safest and best flooring. 46 yrs experience. Lvp is also failing in areas wheelchairs are used, or heavy furniture causing it to buckle

Jeff is really good at this and he knows how to be real safe but I dont suggest using that table saw without the gaurd. Its best to just use jig saw. Jeffs hands was like 1 ruler away from getting chopped texas chainsaw style. If you are new, its really dangerous because you might slip while moving the board and lose your hands. Its just not worth it. Just take the longer route and use the jigsaw otherwise risk your hands.

I have the same problem. I have concrete subfloor that I need to raise to match the height of the tile that’s already installed. From this video I learned that I can install over 1/4” grout lines as long if wary of where my Vinal plank flooring falls, which is awesome and saves me a ton of time self leveling all the grout lines with thin set! I was also going to use self leveling concrete for the whole 200 square foot room until I saw this comment. My question is How should I anchor the cement board to my concrete subfloor. Masonry screws?

    • @calcrenshaw1851
      @calcrenshaw1851 Před 2 lety +1

Have you ever dealt with asbestos containing mastic. My basement has vinyl tile glued with black mastic to the floor. I had sent in sample of tile with mastic and it came back positive for mastic but tile do not have asbestos. do you use vinyl plank in a 3 season sun porch? It doesn't get moisture in it unless someone leaves a window open. I thought it would be a good choice since vinyl plank doesn;t expand or contract like other products. There is tiles in there now and they are very slippery when you come in from the hot tub. Thanks for all your great videos

Jeff, what's your take on installing a floating vinyl floor in the kitchen? Install it before or after the cabinets? I've heard the weight from the cabinets can interfere with the expansion/contraction of the LVP and cause the seams to separate but my kitchen guy insists I should run the flooring under the cabinetry.
