  • After many months of writing, editing, and actually having the time and energy to work on this, here's my extremely long video analysing the final scene of Good Omens Season 2. I had a lot of fun making it and delving into a new interest of mine and creating something around. Also for copyright reasons. clips of the show have been heavily cut up and flipped to avoid that so fingers crossed it worked.

The whole point about Aziraphale being so excited to give Crowley the joy he lost by putting him back in heaven while Crowley was about to confess his feelings is SO poetically frustrating. Cause the only time we see him even remotely express that same amount of simple wonder and contentment are on the rare occasions he can find an excuse to spend leisure time on earth with Aziraphale. From day one he's been looking at Aziraphale with that same delight and possibility he had looking at the infant universe.

I interpreted the vicious “I forgive you” as “that was a cheap trick you just pulled to try and get me to stay, but I’m still hurt and angry at your rejection. So I forgive you because that’s what I do, but I’m still wounded.” Crowley should have known that wouldn’t have worked, that Aziraphale does not abandon his post no matter what and does what he thinks is right.
But I also think that’s the metatron’s mistake too: he thinks Aziraphale is compliant and foolish like Uriel and Muriel and even Michael, but he’s learned so much in his time with Crowley that he can now make plans and decisions on his own and bend/break rules as needed (like when he went back to earth in Mme. Tracy). He’s not power-driven like Michael is or Gabriel was, he’s got his own internal regulator on right and wrong and is operating accordingly, and I suspect he somehow let Crowley know at the last he will need him and this isn’t the end. Crowley just has a lot of hurt to work through, the love of his eternity has just gone to his abuser and that’s a bitter pill to swallow.

Well, I believe that Aziraphale always say "I forgive you" on a way to test Crowley's patience. A type of thermometer to see how they'll react.

One thing I noticed about the kiss: Aziraphael made no attempt to turn his face from Crowley or push him away... watch how his hands reach for Crowley, then falter, as if the gulf between Heaven on one side and his heart and body on the other are tearing him apart. The intimate contact between them only ended when Crowley stepped back, and then the "did I go too far?" look on our demon's face broke my heart.

  • @Starshadow

My feeling about I forgive you - if you see just before, Aziraphale mouthed “I love..” and then said “I forgive you”… he knew it would push Crowley away. He’s still trying to protect him. He knows he’s in danger from both heaven and hell. If Crowley wasn’t going to come with him, he needed to protect him some way. He wanted, I believe, to kiss back. But could not let himself be persuaded, because it would put Crowley in mortal danger. Immortal danger.
And at the last scene, when they look at each other, Aziraphale mouths something to Crowley before he gets on the elevator. I believe that something was “Trust me.”
I think that creepy little smaile means the angel is getting ready to do some insider damage to heaven’s plans to end earth. Or, at least, that’s my hope.
I don’t think the Metatron is -at this point- speaking for the Almighty. I think HER plans are something quite different.

I've been thinking of a great end to season three where God without saying too much, grants Crowley and Aziraphale the happiness they deserve by being with each other. Like there could be a scene where Crowley gets discorporated (supposedly for the first time) and instead if going back to hell, he's sent to heaven where he meets God and she tells him that she's watched the two of them and see they rlly want to be together and that she should have never put Crowley thru the pain of falling. And she re-corporates him as it were to "take care" of the Metatron cause he's expressly going against what she's been asking of him

Aziraphel responded to the kiss like he responded to human food. It was a first~time tactile experience, and we all know what kind of drama queen they are. If they had kissed 5 seconds longer, or Crowley had softened the kiss to let them catch up to the sensations (prolly Crowley's first kiss as well, so they're not going to have any technique at all), then Aziraphel would have prolly jumped in and we would have had an "R" rating. LOL Instead, he was completely overwhelmed and responded by pulling back into 'angelic' mode.

Your sequence of argument scene also highlights how Crowley's reflexive response to trouble is to run away or hide. From the book we know he slept through most of the 19th century. When he argues or gets frustrated, he leaves. They both have unhealthy stress responses.

I think Aziraphale certainly knows how awful heaven can be and is desperate to protect creation, especially Crowley, from it, as a being of love. He knows how Crowley suffered in falling. He knows Gabriel's memories were going to be erased. He knows about being erased from the book of life. I think that Az believes in the Heaven's POTENTIAL or IDEAL for heaven to be "the good guys," the same way I, as an American, while acknowledging that the US was founded on slavery and genocide, still at times believe we can live up to the ideals written in our founding documents.

He actually doesn't know how Crowley suffered in falling, because Crowley never told him. We know, to an extent, because he told the audience how he regrets that but even we don't know what actually happened. Neil also said Crowley isn't a reliable source when it comes to his fall.
So it does make sense Aziraphale wouldn't understand why Crowley doesn't want to be an angel again. He does not know the fall hurt Crowley so much.

Such an interesting take on Azi mindset about Heaven. I agree he definitely knows that Heaven is flawed, he even says "if I'm in charge I can make a difference". But I think being on Earth for so long and coupled with Crowley always sheltering him from the worst of it while they've been on Earth, he has a good amount of cognitive dissonance when it comes to Heaven and as Crowley says has no real understanding of what he is saying yes to. I honestly think figuring that out is gonna make the bulk of his character arc in s3.

The way i see this playing out in season 3 is Aziraphale is under the control by the Metatron, like you say he sees how powerful he and Crowley are together and decides that he needs to keep them apart. And Muriel chooses to help Crowley find him and bring him back with the knowledge she knows but Crowley being heartbroken takes a lot of convincing until he finds out that Azi was tricked. As you can see, season 2 left me with some wishful thinking😅

The thing about “the jurisdiction of a supreme archangel to appoint a demon as an angel (or restore it)” if we go back to Gabriel and Beelzebub they could do the same, from the dialogue between Crowley and Beelzebub about extreme sanctions Beelzebub was an angel too, so, even if Crowley accepted to go to heaven… the principal thing is to start armageddon and if you refuse (supreme archangel or not) you will be punished

  • @tonaholcomb8602
    @tonaholcomb8602 Před 7 měsíci +14

My opinion on the whole 'Aziraphale was out of character 'or the 'Coffee theory' is it basically coming down to the 5 stages of Grief. It was the Denial phase, we rejected reality at the immediate end of the season and we weren't able to cope until later. I think it was the strangeness with the Laudanum and that the Almond flavor discrepancy would maybe point towards Cyanide. For the Threat Theory is plausible, but at the same time Aziraphale looked so confused during the fight to fake it. We know Aziraphale cannot fake it very well and especially not to Crowley.
Also another note is on how in this Season Crowley tried to protect Aziraphale from Heaven. Its assumed that Crowley hasn't told him at least everything about the trial. Crowley also never told him about the Extreme Sanctions threat when Beelzebub had taken him to Hell. And he also hadn't mentioned that that all that happened Gabriel because of them going against the Plan and not just because of the relationship. Even during the argument as a point against Heaven, which is strange to me. Aziraphale hadn't had the first hand experience of seeing how awful Heaven in this Season.
Another strange thing I had noticed is Crowley just letting Aziraphale go alone with the Metatron, and it looked like that Nasty look Metatron gave Crowley... did Crowley see it and still let him go? Crowley is normally so protective and he just let him go and talk alone.

I believe you are right except for the last part. He tried to convince Aziraphale of his mistake and to "show him" how bad Heaven is. But at the time, he didn't tell him about Gabriel's words before they tried to burn Aziraphale because he knows how Heaven is important to him and doesn't want to shatter his reality so violently. I strongly believe he let Aziraphale go first of all , because he was hurt and sad and felt unloved by the action of Aziraphale after the kiss and secondly, as a way to let him see himself how bad can Heaven really be and to realise that Crowley was right all along. I think Crowley believes that if HE can't convince him that Heaven is bad, then he HAS to live his own experiences to understand properly
But i love what you said about grieving because HELL YEAH WE WERE (and still are) IN GRIEF

During the conversation with Nina and Maggie, Crowley does say that he and Aziraphale have been talking for “millions of years”. I don’t really know how this works out. Crowley wasn’t paying much (if any) attention to Aziraphale Before the Beginning and doesn’t really seem to remember anyone from before or during the War. But he does say it. Love this analysis. And I think we share mostly the same thoughts on the whole scene. Even though I've seen it a million times and instantly picked up on Crowley's "you can't leave this bookstore" insert ME. And Azi completely missing that mark and heartwrenchingly taking it literally so basically shooting Crowley straight through the heart with "nothing last forever"
Before that when Aziraphale's saying "You could come back to Heaven and to [PAUSE]... everything" I never picked up on it before but was that Pause also a silent ME. Was their relationship in Heaven longer and deeper that we've been shown so far. I mean there are hints in both s1 and s2 that that might be the case. And he/we still don't really fully understand how the fall affected Crowley. If that's the case then all these Millenia Azi might've been grappling with his love for the Angel "Crowley" he knew before the fall - which Heaven prob had no issue with and the newer love for the Demon Crowley he now knows - which Heaven will punish him for. While Crowley only it seems remembers them as Angel and Demon. And if they were a couple in Heaven, The Metaton probably knew that as well which might be one reason he made the offer to restore Crowley in the 1st place. He clearly knew he'd say no, he likely cast Crowley out. But if he knew Azi loved Angel "Crowley", he'd know it'd be a sweet enough offer to tempt Azi back to Heaven.
And for Azi he's just been given the answer to all his millenia of inner turmoil, only to have his Love snatch it right back away from him. I mean I can't I'm just too impatient s3 can't come quick!

WHAT IF. What If The metatron only wants Aziraphale to become ach angel to get Crowley back on the side of heaven? I mean yes, he could just be taunting Aziraphale with this idea to get him to take the job, after all, it’s only after the metatron suggests working along side Crowley that Aziraphale starts to like the idea! But it also seems a bit weired that he’d be so willing to let a demon return to heaven no questions asked, simply as bait. What I think might be going on is, The metatron is trying to lure Crowley back to heaven, maybe because of the shire amount of power Crowley and Aziraphale have together. There’s also the theory that Crowley used to be an arch angel, and if that’s the case, i’m sure heaven would rather have them on their side, then against them. I just love the set up for season three, all the mystery and guessing. literally can’t wait!

I think the Director did explain it was about other commitments. They will have a vague shooting date in mind I'm sure. The actors are too busy so need to be booked and we know they've both been optioned for it. Neil is writing, the BBC are keeping the set up. So I think it's very unlikely that Season 3 won't happen. And as you say it did very well..
I just hope it doesn't take so many years! I guess at this point it will be filming end of 2024/early 25 at the earliest.I always think that's a problem with these types of shows as the actors will age, but at least we know that's the final season so they won't be trying to stay the same for years to come.
I think the producer saying that Aziraphale was thinking "Do it again" is actually quite interesting. Because it's probably a bit of a joke, but also you can see that breathless excitement and confusion he has, that if the story was leading in another direction, the trope would be that Aziraphale would have pulled him back in and initiated more kissing. That's how a lot of those first kiss scenes go. So I get what the producer means.

It has just occurred to me that the coffee was a threat. I have wondered why the metatron got coffee. It seems odd to me that. The metatron asked Nina if anyone ever asked for death instead of coffee (so predictable was the response to Nina saying no one asked for death) so when the metatron offered the coffee to Aziraphale it was an either/or choice. Either accept my offer (the coffee) or get dead. Like Book of Life dead. I think the metatron was threatening Aziraphale with Crowley's death also (the offer to make Crowley an angel again was a threat not an offer. The metatron knew Crowley would reject the offer so why offer at all unless there was a subtext to the offer) The metatron even implied that he himself has made this choice before himself (I have ingested things in my day). So I think that is why Aziraphale was so desperate during the lead up to and after the kiss.
