That being said you have to walk before you can run and in most situations simple is better. You learn complicated stuff to add more to your ability to react and peacefully resolve a situation no matter the situation without harm to yourself or your aggressor"

For someone who's advansed in the art of Aikido, an aggressive encounter could be handled peacefully without causing harm or extensive harm. But, if your Aikido skills are not as advanced you need to counter your aggressor in any which way that you can in order to survive. I'm not and never was taught in the art of Aikido but I do understand the principle of the Art, it is quite fascinating. Thanks for sharing

With my small experience, I can say that aikido doesn't make you a fighter but as judo it make you aware of body placement and how to use your weight and the weight of your opponent to help you.
It also learns you how to fall, and that is a skill that's very useful in life in general !

That's exactly the use of martial arts nowadays (well, in my opinion, anyway), to be able to defend another. Running is usually just much more effective. However, you, or more often another, might not be able to run. Then, you'd like to be able to hold your own and defend yourself or the other.
This situation might not even ever happen in your life, but it's always good to be prepared, I think. Besides, I just like to see the movements of martial artists.

Owen Modeste you're right. No matter what martial arts you learn be it Karate, Tang Soo Do, Kungfu, Boxing, Krav Maga etc..they only teaches responds and movements based on known situations and controlled environment or settings. What differs a fighter and a martial artist is the ability to observe, learn, adapt, improvise and overcome the challenges that comes. There's no other ideal way to achieve that except facing the real situations. Some martial arts like Krav Maga are not known by many but they are as lethal as others because people uses them in real fight for life. Just ask any Israeli soldiers or maybe if you are fortunate enough may request for a training and 'fight' at their army bases. Formality is only for demonstrations and training. The practicality of the mives and responds to any given situations will have to be obtained in real life fights whereby your win will be determined by your ability to adapt and improvise. Good luck.

Doesn't matter what martial art you practice. I've been into "raw street fights" and "gang fights".. and trust me... no martial arts will save you. You don't know the opponent if he have a knife... a stick....a gun.... if his big brother is in the mafia ( I dealth with those before ), or if he got a pshycho killer cousin... or if he does pro boxing.. or pro judo... or pro anything... you don't know if he got a friend beside or near that will come behind you and stick his knife in your back... you don't know nothing. So the best thing to do, is to walk away ( if you can ) or run away ( if you can ). Now, in a situation where you "can't" walk away or run away... well, that's when you have to think smart. What can you do to get out of this situation without hurting him.. or letting him hurting you.. because remember this, if there is "no witnesses".. and you injure your opponent... "you" will be arrested for assault by the police as there is "no" witness to support you. It will be your voice against your opponent's voice. And you know what... If the police doesn't like your face... he won't really care who started the fight, he might just arrest you both ( espacially if your black...oh god.. here we go ).
Now, in a situation where "there is a witness"... well... then, try to show to the witness and your opponent that you really don't wanna fight...tell them " Yo.... I'm sorry.. I don't wanna fight..." anything to calm down the situation. If he gets to close to you...back up...put your hands in front of him ( just in case he throw a punch or something ) so you'll be able to stop him sooner ( or even better.. grab his hand to do your aikido stuff or Judo stuff ) . Yea, the best way to look "kool" and save yourself from the police "and" to not get beat up, is to lock him down on the floor and and make sure he can't move ( Judo, jiujitsu, aikido ).
You can try to hit him.. but like I said.. if he bleeds.. you "will" be the first suspect according to police.. and worst.. if your opponent becomes handicap.. you might get arrested and prosecuted for assault and attempt to murder....ya know, we live in a sick world... first rule of all.. just walk away... live your happy life and have sex with alot of women before you die.
Also..let's say you get to fight it out.. with or without any witnesses.. then your opponent is down...you leave all proud of yourself for taking him down... Good job.. ( clap clap ) well guess what, what if that guy, you injured, comes back at you?...( revenge) or on your family.. your sister, your lil brother.. your kids.. your gf or bf? What then? Let's say the dude got a gun and kill one of your family member in retaliation cuz you beat him up so bad? What then? Let me guess.. you're gonna get back at him too right? And kill his family? Then he'll bring his uncle to kill another member of your family? Then you're gonna call your step father to come and kill her baby sister?Right? NOT GOOD. That's a viscious circle and the 'reason" why the planet is so divided. Everyone want so to play "who has the longest "stick". Like I said.. you can avoid all this.. by simply walking away and leave your ego in your pocket.. or... act like a God.. and be ready for sad consequences.
Some people thinks that I'm a coward for saying all this above. Trust me... I am far from being a coward. Back in the days, I could "put you down" with one punch ( weighted 169 pounds, dead lifted 300 pounds, bodybuilding for 25 years, did boxing, muay thay, kung fu, kick boxing... I was very "intimdating" back then but I never wanted to be like that...it's just after being bullied for so many years, I kinda work out my way up to a point where "enough is enough" and I was very powerful. But you know what... something happen as I got older.. I became more "mature" and I forgave my ennemies. Actually, there is no ennemies.. only people who seeks "attention" and "help" because they themselves... live in "fear" due to personal issues they experienced in their life ( Divorce, parents abuse, child abuse, lack of affection, lack of friends, etc etc ). So in order to express themselves...they release their "anger" on others ( technically, they are crying out loud to be helped but they don't know how to show it ). However, they do not care of the consequences simply because they are in "pain" 24/7. It's only when you understand "that"... that you think twice before hurting someone. But most common mortal.. don't think about that.. and instead...decide to "confront" and well... ya know the rest. If you want to fight ( because you have fighting genes or urges ) , get into "legal fights" competitions ( boxing, mma, taekwondo, aikido, karate , whatever, etc ) and go ahead prove your yourself in there and burst your testosterones out. It's legal and you get no consequences + you might ge t a medal or a trophy. Cool stuff. But in the street.. there's no rules.. no referee..no time out..no trophies, no cheerings...nope. the second you forgot this.. you can die.. and it's not a joke. Some people think real life fights is like a video game or GTA online ( lol )people will fight and fair and all.. you think they will stop hitting you when your on the ground? Have you guys seen any videos online where the opponent continue to kick you on the head while your already "passed out"? You thinks fights are fair and regulated? ... "wrong". So who is to blame... the agressor who "wanted" to fight... or the person who "welcomed" the fight and got "brain damaged at the end? The answer is yours. Everyone should go to church, it's fun and everyone is family there. Cheers.
ps: Extra : Little story: One of my friend who was the "biggest" guy in city ( like superman big and muscled ) had an argument with a client at a bar ( a skinny little dude ) and hurt him badly to kick out of the club ....but the next day.. guess what I learn... he has been shot dead in the back...
Another one of my friend, who was again, the biggest 7 foot tall Mr Olympia I ever seen in my entire life at the gym, hit a skinny dude over some argument...later...I heard that he also...ended dead shot in the back....
So, you guys want to fight? Think street fights are legit and fair without consequences? Like I said. If you can, "walk away" or "run away" and avoid all this shebang for nothing.
Think about it. Or go to church like I said. It's really fun once you understand the bible. You learn to forgive your ennemies and to understand them better. Amen.

S V I think the main problem with martial arts is that they were developed when combat was still done with swords and spears. If you lose your weapon, you could still have a slim chance against someone armed with a sword. However, we have had guns/artillery and modern warfare for like 300+ years and during that time, martial arts became more...recreational, consumer friendly, antiquated, and typically only used in competition against someone else also using the same martial art (with lots of rules for safety) which makes them completely impractical for "street" use

Mike Twyman the issue is that with any other game or profession or hobby, you can practice. Basketball, target shooting etc. You cannot practice life or death situations because you can't replicate the actual threat of death. You can rehearse all of your motions and moves, come up with the best plan, train against an instructor with a fake gun... Then when a real gun gets shoved in your face you get paralyzed with fear.

He says, "Aikido in its basic form doesn’t work. What works are the principles. Aikido is not designed to 'work.' It’s designed for the study of certain principles - distance, economy of action, technique, accuracy, how to become an axis, how to use leverage, how to place oneself in relation to an attack. It’s the principles that 'work.'"

I have never practised aikido but my father did when he was young in the 70's. His teacher was Toshiro Suga in France (maybe you know him just by the fact he played in Moonraker). The man was a street fighter for real (he taunted bad boys abroad in pubs and alleys when he traveled for his demonstrations and made them bleed...) and he was a hell of a fighter, but he mixed aikido with other martial arts and common sense. He once told my father aikido is the ultimate martial art, but you must be very good to make the most of it, else you won't stand a chance if someone well trained attacks you. Better learn box or something else if you don't practise it at a very high level.

I am second degree brown belt from the 90's and Aikido is a combination of mixed arts( Karate, self defense and Judo). When used correctly should be sufficient. Self defense always prevail in feeling to realize it's about to go down to prepare. The initial reaction to the confrontation normally determines the direction of the altercation. But with a seasoned fighter, you can recover from loosing with a given opportunity.

I studied AIKIDO privately in College. The one useful thing for me is it taught me how to fall. Decades later, one winter day I'm out walking to the garage after an ice storm and hit a slippery spot and went flying through the air in a fall that could have seriously injured or killed me. But the old training, I had thought long since forgotten kicked in and in the 1 second or so that I was airborne, I twisted to the right, got my right arm out and slapped the ground as I came down and hit. To my amazement, nothing hurt, nothing broken, not even an ache. I got up, brushed myself off, marveled at how such a simple trick could work and went about my business.

All the things you showed is exactly why Aikido succeeds in the street fight. The problem with people who take Aikido is they try to apply a straight kata, to a street fight, no straight taught approach with ANY martial art works with a textbook kata. One has to interpret and apply the lessons in a kata in a practical way! I stress that to my students (first dan here). Aikido is a fantastic practical martial art but a lot of people seem to have a problem implementing the techniques in a practical way. It's about redirection, and joint manipulation in a direct way when faced with a direct threat. True Aikido way is to inflict the least amount of harm necessary to subdue or disable your opponent but in the end, the choice of needed force is up to you. My Aikido training has saved me numerous times, whether it was just diffusing the situation or having to handle an angry violent opponent. I have also studied Tai Chi, Chin Na and Shotokan Karate, but it was Aikido that made the most sense in a life and death situation.

I love these people and I got to pull them apart again and put them to bed like naughty children.I live the old school philosophy. a 70 year old woman attacked me, grabbed my over all straps and tried to throw me to the earth. The "effective, simple strike" he did there is the very first technique in the 17 basic technique of Aikido. It's the first one of Atemiwaza. Also, once you get to a certain level of Aikido, the form does not matter. What matters is the principles behind it. Breaking balance, get out of the way, attack your opponent's physical weak point, etc. If you just desperately trying to perform a technique on the street without any adaptation to the situation, of course you will get hit. And that's not what Aikido promotes. DON'T BLAME AIKIDO; BLAME YOURSELF FOR NOT LEARNING THE CORE OF AIKIDO.

The street don't have boxing/mma gloves.. Nor fights end on the ground (only losers end up there). Still... definitely you should learn boxing/judo since they cover all the basic in the most simple way possible (like the video preach)... alot of the "techniques" work well against "ordinary" people. I've used the video techniques in all my street fights. Worked. Friends used Aikido, Muaythai... at the end.. It's the person that matters. However, like I mentioned above.. Martial arts who teach simple-fast stuff have more potential for efficiency.. Hence I recommend everyone to do Boxing or MuayThai, Judo than go in AikiJutjitsu/kravmaga/cqc... and to pick a great school

I am a Green Beret Combat Vet Retired and an Aikidoka for over 2 decades and I have used Aikido in many real fights against multiple opponents and it works brilliantly when wielded well- that is, control the head, control the man: that simple. All other locks and moves happen when that fails. It takes a fighter to know this, see it and warrior with a control of his own head, to do it. Those who study the art for the belts, miss the mark. Chest puffed out, shouting louder to seem more intimidating, walk closer to get in your face, throw a tester punch to see what you do, throw more if you fight back. They all come telegraphed. The best thing you can do, and the reason I stopped losing fights, is to understand and be aware of your surroundings, keep a minimum distance from your aggressor and strike first whilst closing the distance. Don't let a meathead use his shit tactics when even the smallest amount of martial arts and awareness will win you most of your fights against morons.
