    So glad to see this video! After 10 years of my annual blood work always finding I had high blood calcium level and then shrinking 2 inches in height my doctor ordered a bone density test. At 58 yrs and no other risk factors I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis. Further blood testing found I had extremely high parathyroid hormone level (PTH) resulting from a tumor on one of my parathyroid glands. I had a parathyroidectomy in June and my calcium and PTH levels are now normal. I’m working on bone health now. It was my experience that doctors may not understand high blood calcium and PTH levels. Maybe this information will be helpful to others.

      I had the same thing several years ago, high calcium and elevated Parathyroid levels. My Endocrinologist checked my vitamin D level and it was pretty low, about 24. She put me on 5000mg of vit d daily and 600 mg of calcium. Within 6 months my vit d level was 45 and my calcium and parathyroid levels were normal, and they’ve been normal for 2 years now. I don’t think all doctors understand the connection between vit d and hyper parathyroid. Wishing you well

      I'm lucky enough to live near a large city where there's an osteoporosis clinic staffed by a couple of endocrinologists. As Amy and others have mentioned, sometimes there's a secondary cause of osteoporosis that is treatable, and it's worth it to find out if you're one of those people. In my case, I appear to have garden variety osteoporosis, but it was still good to rule out other causes. Plus, I have a baseline collagen type I cross-linked telopeptide (CTX) level (a marker of bone resorption/loss that is detected in blood) that can be used to monitor the efficiency of my treatment in addition to biannual bone density tests.

    Diagnosed with Osteoporosis at 66 in 2021. Everything in my hormones and blood calcium was normal. I however: had very low levels of D and B12. Dr did not mention the relationship of these vitamins and OP. Luckily, I am a nurse and I know what to do right away. Ironically, I educate on this matters, but I failed to apply it to myself. After the initial shock, and refusing the prolia medication, I started my own plan to treat myself. I still consider myself with OP because I still have to do a new test, but overall I fell stronger and my aches and pains, that I attributed to getting old are gone. I was also pre diabetic, that is also resolved. Never have had a fracture, and I intend to continue on my path to stay as healthy as possible as I get older. I have never smoked, and only drink a bit of alcohol in social occasions. Also I have a very bad skin reaction to heavy alcohol consumption. My activity level was very low; my work and family dynamics were also making me sick. I had to relearn to focus on myself first. I wish you all good health. Great educational video!

      Hello Nora, how do you get the doctors to agree to testing for vitamin/mineral levels? Every time I suggest it they say it varies so much that it does not really give good data. I don’t believe that to be true……. Are there labs that do this besides your doctor? Just curious how to get it checked without going through the normal doctor route. Thanks.

    • @200Nora
      @200Nora Před 8 měsíci

      @@sheila7814 Change your doctor. While it is true that minerals and vitamins can change even daily, a major drop or high, can indicate a problem somewhere in the body. Vit D and B12 should not be a bargain. The minerals like potassium/sodium/mag Ca work together in different processes in the body and a major inconsistency indicates a problem that needs attention, even when they can only be measure in the blood. Calcium for ex can be normal in blood, but we still have deficiencies in organ functioning e.g muscles, bones and heart. They should be checked at least once a year. Many drs do not want to do full assessments and labs because of insurance restrictions. I am a nurse; I know how the system works. Take care and find you a dr that advocates for youi.

    My initial reaction upon learning that my osteopenia had regressed to osteoporosis was both anger and depression. Although I am still unsure as to whether I will get back into ice skates, I have rebounded with a steady weight loss to my most healthy level since college and walking at least 6 days a week (10k+). The latest improvement is incorporating some weights and balance routines at home. Like your positive attitude and looking forward to trying some of your recommendations.

    Hi, I found your channel to be really helpful. I learned a lot of information since watching your channel. I am 75 and have osteoporosis. I couldn't understand why I would have it because I use to exercise 3 days a week, 1 hour each aerobics class. I found out through one of the ER doctors one time. I was in for asthma. He was the only doctor that informed me that steroids are causing my low bone. That opened my eyes! I'm also on a Asthma inhaler 2x daily because I had severe asthma. I feel like I'm doing better. I have been thinking about asking my doctor about my asthma medication, and if their is a way where I could cut back. I've been trying out the exercises on your videos for people with osteoporosis.
    I have a question about twisting whether sitting down or standing up. Is that not good for me to do?

    I agree that walking will help you to maintain bone. But ONE THING you never mention is walking up a steep hill!!
    Why not?
    Resistance will help you BUILD BONE so make your walk more challenging by using a treadmill with a nice incline & work at that or find a hill--and climb it.
    It has helped me greatly maintain my bone health.

Do you recommend that wearing it more often might be more beneficial? Also, can you tell me your thoughts on mini-trampoline use for the steps and is it beneficial for the bones (I am in Canada and our weather this time of year does not always allow for walking outside)? I find my Apple Watch picks it up as running or elliptical exercise when I am on the trampoline but my heart rate does not go up too high, it kind of hovers around 100 bpm. What are your thoughts on wearing the weighted vest while gently jumping (hardly a jump, just up and down movement if wearing the vest) on the mini-trampoline? Thank you so much for any information you can provide for my questions.

      Risedronate. I was on it for three weeks, by which time I was in so much pain I could scarcely walk. Is there a difference as far as osteoporosis goes? I also have kidney stones. I had surgery this year to remove those. Why would my body take calcium out of my bones just to make stones in the process of trying to get rid of it? I suspect that my body is too acidic. Would this cause my body to pull calcium out of my bones...in an attempt to neutralize the acid? By PTH levels are normal.
