  • Welcome to my first-time watching as we react to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes exceeded my expectations for what was ahead after watching Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Everything from the breathtaking visuals, compelling storytelling, and the evolution of Caesar and his fellow apes was done better than I could've hoped for!
Directed by Matt Reeves, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" continues the saga of Caesar as he navigates the tensions between humans and apes in a post-apocalyptic world. I absolutely loved how they delved into the themes and questions the first movie posed and were able to elaborate and develop these themes into a narrative that keeps the audience at the edge of their seats.
The film does a tremendous job at navigating the themes of survival, loyalty, and conflict. All of this would not work if it wasn't for the incredible performance by Andy Serkis as Caesar and Toby Kebbell's Koba. The two of them do an excellent job at delivering so much emotion and breathing life into these characters. Combine that with the stunning cinematography, and poignant storytelling and you have yourself a solid film that has so much to offer and has solidified this trilogy as one of my favorites in recent years.
We hope that you enjoy our reactions, commentary and discussions as we delve into the film's themes, how it goes beyond your standard blockbuster and how the depth in it's storytelling is what ultimately makes this film be a standout!

      no thank you so much!!
yes this movie is a decade old..
the first original of this series franchise started as a tv series and several movies in the 70-80 era..
2000 version or 1999 version, im sure which year but it featured: the late great michael clark duncan(from the green mile and the movies with ben afleck aka daredevil, michael played the infamous "king pin" yes marvel studios branded that character and elektra as well) michael played a general ape in that movie..
the villain anti hero was played by the same actor who plays the villain the move "the incredible hulk" aka abomination.

I love your T-shirt Denise. It would be cool to see you guys do gaming content and comment on the cinematography of some great games like the Last of Us. Thee way you guys talk about movies is great and not enough people talk about the movie side of games. and there are some bangers. Hideo Kojimas MGS series, and Death Stranding. Halo started making some epic cutscenes. Uncharted, GTA is cinematic as all heck, and may more besides. In fact a great mix between the two might be great game movies. would love to see you guys react to something like Final Fantasy Advent Children/Advent Children Complete, or Final Fantasy Kingsglaive, The first Silent Hill movie, etc.

A seriously underrated villain that not enough people bring up. He was pure evil but you can perfectly understand why. Humans only ever inflicted pain and fear unto Koba whereas humans raised Caesar with love and kindness. Koba was treated as a lab experiment and pet but Caesar was treated like a son and part of the family.
Koba and Caesar are just two sides of the same coin. Either one could've been just as good or evil as the other if they had been raised in different circumstances. Amazing character.

to add even yet more nuance to Koba's character- he's not a chimpanzee like the rest of them, but a bonobo; a species that has almost zero internal violence.
The horror he went through to turn a purely nonviolent creature into what he became must be beyond justifiable to such a naturally peaceful being.

I mean Rocket did start out as a bully, but only because he was just a wild animal who didn't know any better. Caesar granting him intelligence helped him realize what Caesar was doing for him and apekind.
Honestly I wish Koba and Rocket had more interactions with how they're such perfect foils. Rocket was Caesar's enemy who turned into his most loyal friend, and Koba was Caesar's friend who became his worst enemy.

I think that is why they were so pissed off because if my memory serves me right Koba still held a grudge against humans for what they did and he noticed Caesar didn't have a grudge so he tried to assassinate him to blame the humans.
And even though some of the apes were there throughout the beginning of Caesar's leadership, they wanted revenge because they seen like: he did everything for us so let's take revenge. And Koba preyed on their loyalty and in a fit of rage and vengeance they didn't read into Koba, they went along with it, they seen as with Koba they can take that revenge.

What i love about koba is he hates humans the most, yet is the most human of them all.
Hes the first to use a gun and just straight up murder humans with them. He uses deceit and manipulation on both humans and apes, he plots and wants war, he enjoys bloodshed. He has very little remorse for humans like many humans have for animals. Hes controlled by emotions and allows them to influence him and doesnt think about consequences. The way he moves and holds himself is also very human.

Malcolm: "I thought we had a chance."
    Caesar: " I did too."
After Caesar says those last words to Malcolm, I began to understand why he was thinking about humans in those 10 years they were hidden. Caesar cares deeply about his family(apes) and wants nothing more than for them to be safe. However, as they were growing/advancing all those years, Caesar continued to think about the humans especially Will Rodman, which is a sign that he misses them. This causes him to wonder about the human's existence and whether or not they would be able to hold peace amongst each other, creating a light of hope. Malcolm also had this hope when he encountered the apes feeling the true nature of Caesar and his compassion towards them.
Imagine Caesar's and Malcolm's hope of both the humans and apes maybe coinciding with one another one day. Lamentably, this idea fades away as they come to the realization that both their responsibilities towards their people and their current actions prevent this from happening. Two really honorably and honest characters who understand that their chance for peace would never come true.

This entire trilogy is a microcosm of humanity. Focusing on the two sides, humans and apes, but showing the microcosms within the two sides, at the same time. Race relations, political and religious differences. Every time I watch this trilogy, I am reminded of Carl Sagan's "pale blue dot" speech. So many videos on YT have him speaking these words. And they are definitely worth a watch, for everyone.

Caesar's "You are not ape" is such a tragic moment for the apes' society.
They had an idyllic existence, without any of the bullshit that we've acquired over the millenia since we were at that stage ourselves.
"Ape not kill ape" was the foundational principle upon which their unity was based; the bond that "we're all in this together".
Now, the precedent has been set that being an ape is not the inalienable right of every ape born: Caesar is the arbiter of apehood.
Once you can deny an ape his or her status as an ape, you're on the slippery slope towards nothing being off the table.
I always see it as the tragic moment when the apes began their descent towards what we've become.

Yea, but Koba wasn't ape. I mean, he was biologically an ape, but he no longer represented the ideal standard of what an ape in Ceaser's society should be. Koba broke too many rules of their civilization and embodied the same malevolence and selfishness that lead to the obliteration of human society in this universe. Yes, you value the life of your own species, but when a member has proven to be too dangerous to the rest of the community exceptions must be made. Koba needed to die otherwise the other apes would always be in danger.

Not too mention, Koba is not a chimpanzee but a bonobo which in nature have a more calm and peaceful demeanor than chimpanzees. So knowing that, you know that he really had to have been tortured. I’d put these into some of the finest examples of how good science fiction should be done. The way they force you to see different perspectives, and shove you into thinking outside of your own “side” is fantastic. If you’re feeling conflicted, they’re doing it right. This is something we need more of, the key thing that comes from understanding is empathy.

Such an amazing and underrated movie. I know you didn’t show it in your reaction but I love the scene at the end after Caesar and Malcolm part ways, Malcolm continues to watch Caesar become the leader again as he himself slowly backs out and gets engulfed by shadow and disappears. I love the symbolism there kind of showing man’s time is coming to an end disappearing into the shadows as the Apes become the dominant species.

This movie was important in the sense that Caesar realizes just because someone looks like you does not automatically make them your ally, nor someone different the enemy. We all have the same capacity of good and evil. It is our choices that determine who we are and how others should see us. War becomes inevitable when we forget that.

Don’t get me wrong. Gary has a had a long and illustrious career.
But this role.. this scene.. I think is the pinnacle of it all.
Without any words at all he shows just what kind of man Dreyfus is like.
Of course he’s happy that the humans just got power. Of course he feels like he accomplished his mission.
But he takes one look at his past… one look at his family and he breaks down into a shell of a man.
Because even if he’s the leader of the humans during the apocalypse even if he has saved them for now.
He will never be satisfied because he failed those that needed him most.
His crying is so damn raw and real and this scene man… I’m crying right along side him.

I know this is not within this universe but Rosa Salazar gave a near Oscar for motion capture worthy performance in Alita Battle Angel, based on a manga. It’s not a perfect film but it’s so darn entertaining. She became a polarizing figure on CZcams and pinned against Captain Marvel as Alita, the movie, doesn’t paint men as sleazy and dumb. Captain Marvel has some of that and I guess she was too assertive for some and it became an agenda and there’s videos about it and the comment sections were ablaze. It was nuts 🔩 The New York Times wrote an article about how she was basically a sex bot. It was insane. You guys should watch and be the judge. A campaign was launched and a plane was hired to fly above the Dolby Theatre during the 92nd Oscars with a banner asking for a sequel. It was a James Cameron project that he passed to Robert Rodriguez because of Avatar.
I was a tour guide when this movie was being filmed and I still remember looking down from the top of the open tour bus at the next lane on Columbus street, which was turned into a set with weathered vehicles and there were two men in motion capture suits and two black SUVs with cameras on cranes. It was cool.

I’m not sure if it was intentional or not but something I noticed in the scene where Ceasar and Koba have their fight, Koba touches Ceasar’s chest with his pointer finger. Which upsets him and leads to their fight. Similar to how in Rise the neighbor touches Will’s father with his pointer finger when threatening to call the cops on him. In both scenes, Ceasar sees this as a sign of disrespect.

Koba was just broken, like here’s like his full story: Koba did once in his life trust humans, but unfortunately he was put in the wrong hands. When Koba was very young him and his mother were under the care of a woman who loved apes, she loved to study them and care for them. But one day Koba never saw her again. After that him and his mother were put in the care of a terrible human. One night the very bad man was drunk, he walked into Koba and his mothers cage and beat Koba’s mother with a bag of oranges. When Koba woke up the next morning he saw his mother’s lifeless body laying infront of him, Koba had never experienced death before because he was born in captivity, so he thought his mother was just still sleeping. After that incident the man was fired and Koba never saw him again either or him mom. Koba waa then sold to a ape show host who had another ape named Milo. Koba and Milo were used basically as a joke. The host made Koba and Milo do tricks and other things to entertain people who watched it. One day the show host was drunk. Koba now knew what drunk was, the host started abusing Koba and Milo for along time. The host starved Koba and Milo, beat them, and other horrible things. One day Koba knew him and Milo couldn’t survive like this anymore. Koba had a plan to escape. This plan would end up only getting Koba out of this terrible place, Koba ended up getting his milky eye during his time here aswell, the host put a cigarette out in Koba’s eye. Koba in the end got away from the host but Milo was killed in the process by the host. Koba was free for a little before getting captured by animal control. Koba then was taken to multiple labs and tested on. Finally after years of this he was taken to Genises where Caeser his new leader broke him free
