    Thanks for taking us along on the desert trip. (Even more thanks for sparing us from the U2 talk. As a former member of the band's cult, I'm still recovering from the trauma and embarrassment.) These video installments were a delightful rollercoaster ride, full of real emotion but free of FOMO.
    The Wax Trax's pricing policy had my blood boiling. Fortunately, I spotted their clearance bin and calmed down before I had a heart attack. That vintage shop in Joshua Tree was even harder to watch. A couple of those bins that you flipped through may leave long-lasting emotional scars.
    It was a joy to watch your good fight be rewarded. Ramsey Lewis with braces and a shirtless Jerry Butler singing "I Only Have Eyes for You" are splendid trophies. The one time that I saw Jerry Butler in concert, it was Gene Chandler, who shared the bill, who sang "I Only Have Eyes for You." It remains one of my favorite concert memories. It helps me love myself when I remember the shameful time when I heard Bono sing "Get On Your Boots" in 2009. (Like half the crowd, I used the song as an opportunity to go for a pee. Even U2 fans don't want to hear their new stuff/stuff they stole from Elvis Costello.)
    Cheers,
    Jacob

      Hi Jacob
      I whole heartedly agree with your stance on U2. I can do without pretty much anything they’ve released during the past 20 years but I still have a fondness for some of those older records. Bono shares the same problem as most leas singers in that, no matter how hard he tries, he’ll never be as cool as the bass player.
      I’m always happy to see a bin full of Jerry Butler LP’s. It’s one of life’s great pleasures. I’m rather jealous of you having seen Jerry and Gene in concert though. That sounds like a perfect way to spend an evening. There’s something comforting about Jerry’s vocals. He always had a lovely warmth to his voice.
      The pricing in the vintage shop and Wax Trax were frustrating but ultimately meant that I spent my money elsewhere, and I was very pleased with the records I brought home.
      Cheers!
      John

    • @DallasOpenMicr
      @DallasOpenMicr Před 9 měsíci

      Lloyd Price and Ben E. King were on the bill with Gene and Jerry. It was a wonderful evening. Sadly, Mr. King's "Stand by Me" was marred by the artificial "Islands Setting" that was used by the band's keyboard player for that song.
      Nice point about allowing Wax Trax to divert your funds to a happy elsewhere. There will always be more records out there than we'll have time to discover/enjoy/consume in a lifetime. Certainly there will always be more records out there than shelf space. Enjoy the feast.
      On a related note, I find FOMO to be more powerful when it comes to missing a great concert than obtaining an album on vinyl.
      Bono was a nice enough chap to let the summer heat pass before luring people from all over the world out to Vegas. I'll give him that.
      Cheers,
      Jacob

    It was my pleasure to finally meet up with you in person John. I only wish we had more time, the universal problem. Rich Rosen @ Vegas Wax Trax is one of the last of the great record dealers. The story you told about offering to trade you for the record he just sold you is indicative of his character, bless him. I probably should have recommended Record City! It's a good place for digging for reasonable prices. I've been seeing a metric butt-ton of social media RE: U2 @ the Sphere. I cannot wait until my ticket comes up.

But then he quoted you a more expensive price for something else but corrected it? A numbers game indeed. >< Cool digging clips. I know what you mean, Dale, but the records were so good! We all wanna see rare records, right? It’s just that you didn’t have a clue how he was gonna price them. If I went there again, I’d just hit the soul and funk A-Z, which took up an entire wall, and would pull out everything that was interesting. Him pricing it would be a ball ache but there was stuff there that I’d never seen before. Hopefully get at least a few good deals out of it. My lack of a strategy cost me….

    Sounds like a wonderful trip with some nice finds. I can't buy off dealers who don't price their records. I've missed some cool records with that attitude but they always seem to charge above the average price, even if the record is not in great condition. Nothing worse than waiting as they peruse Discogs. Looking forward to seeing your California finds video and hearing all about the Sphere. All the best, Steve.

    • @6inchpianist
      @6inchpianist  Před 9 měsíci

      Cheers Steve. Whenever I go to a shop that doesn’t price the records, I feel like I’m doing all the hard work by picking the decent records out of a lot of rubbish. If nothing else, the shop in Vegas had plenty of great records to look at, even if I couldn’t actually buy any of them. It was certainly an experience.

  • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893

    Not sure 8 could cope with that shops no price policy. My Dad always said, "If it doesn't say what the price is, it's too much."
    I reckon I'd just assume everything I pulled out would be more than I was willing to pay.
    Mind you, most of the obscure country rock records I'm looking for have quite low Discogs prices, it's only in Europe where they're more expensive and the postage only adds to that. So, it might actually be happy hunting ground for me.
    Hope you had a good time, I'm only sorry the trip was marred by having to see U2.

    • @6inchpianist

    Hey John, I took a trip up from Mexico where I live to LV about a year ago and went to Record City, it was the best shop of the trip, came out with a bunch of soul records, many of them recommendations from your good self and/or Nadine! Such great prices up in the US and the selections so different from the UK....eg that Come Together Ike/Tina album Mazzy pulled with you the other day, a mere 5 dollars. What's your thoughts on Curtis' There's No Place like America Today, I notice you flipped past it...I didn't go to Wax City, as the feedback from so many on the VC was just too negative, I do kinda regret not going now though, even just for a look. Short trips, can't go everywhere. I did go to Zia Records though, it's pretty good for the dusty one dollar bins, very near the airport and open late on Sunday night, perfect before early morning flight! Love your channel mate, one of, if not the best, cheers from La Paz!

    What a bizarre system - reminds me of an antique store owner I once encountered who thumbed through the records I brought up from the basement, had a quick look at Discogs, then announced he wanted to take them home for further research before coming back with a price for me the next day! Had to walk away from that one...can see what you mean by the bins in that first shop, some heat for sure...I actually have a couple of the Latin records, from that old collection of course as I never see much of those otherwise. Only got the Mr. Bongo reissue of the later Trio Mocoto album, I couldn't have resisted that original either. Stupidly I passed up on a copy of the Coke one, at a shop that has now closed down - I do have his previous self titled one. Wonder if Record City might have been the shop I visited in Vegas, it was a smallish place in a run down strip mall just off the Strip, as I recall...Ive got that Jerry Butler, bought at the same store where I left the Coke album behind actually, been meaning to revisit that one. Cheers!

    • @6inchpianist
      @6inchpianist  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi Doug. I suppose that by pricing everything at the time of sale he is asking for a price that he believes the record is worth on that day. Interestingly, even after he gave me a price on the records that I passed on, he never put a price sticker on them. They just went back in the bins ready to be priced again in the future. The stock was incredible though. OG Blue Notes, Strata East, Krautrock, Italian Prog - there was loads of everything. And I didn’t even get to the reggae!
