      Ma gandeam la un fel de "Dracula tour" unde, cum ati spus, sa prezentati locuri care au legatura cu Tepes. Asa daca tot suntem in sezonul de vacanta.

    I have a question. I am reading Michael Beheims poem at the moment. How does he and brother Jacob fit into this context?

    • @CorpusDraculianum
      @CorpusDraculianum  Před rokem

      Our team researched Michel Beheim's poems with the help of German professor specialized on medieval German literature (and btw she discovered one more poem about him, but it is very short and not that interesting or important). She thinks that the whole story about the monks is Beheim's invention (based of course on the episodes from the standard Dracula Stories). He invented brother Jacob because he needed some authenticity for the poem (which is the most fictional of all sources on Vlad...). And our professor has another very interesting hypothesis: brother "Michel" who is lying to Vlad in order to be liked by him and get away, could be the alter ego of the author. Beheim worked for several noblemen and monarchs and by inventing the figure of brother Michel he wanted to express how much he despised them (comparing the indirectly tp the tyrant Dracula) and that he flattered them only for money... What do you think? Kind regards, A.W.

      @@CorpusDraculianum 1. That was also my thought, did he invent these monks? (just as Bram Stoker claimed his story was based on highly credible eyewitnesses!)
      But: It says in the book I read that brother Jacob wandered to the monastery of St. Gallen, where he settled and wrote down his story, (Codex 806) which confirms Beheims story. Is that nonsens, or is there any conformation that that text was written by a brother Jacob?
      2. And is the St. Gallen text the same as you are talking about in the video? (Sorry, haven´t read any of them, haven´t found it on the internet, or in any book so far.
      3. About the brother Michael theory, sounds plausible, but also, I was thinking, the motif of three brothers getting the same task (or question) is a common element in fairy tales.
      4. You talk about 3 phases of how the stories spread, the propaganda, the monks and the printed matter. But here, as you say, Beheim travelled among different courts with his poem, what do you think of the spreading in the upper class milieu? Wouldn´t that have been of considerable importance?

    • @CorpusDraculianum
      @CorpusDraculianum  Před rokem

      @@Linnaeana 1. The monks were part of the original version of the Dracula Stories (they later also play a role in the Russian Story), but Beheim gave them names and expanded the episode.
      We don't think that the monastery can be identified with St. Gallen but with the Franciscan Monastery near Targoviste. There is unfortunately zero proof that brother Jacob really existed.
      2. No, the Tegernsee manuscript is different. There are 7 manuscripts of the German Stories with 13 surviving printings.
      4. We don't know the intentions of Beheim's Dracula poem. Our professor hypothesized that it could have been a present for king Matthias Corvinus for the ceremony in 1464 when he received the Holy Crown of Hungary from the emperor, but we don't know that for sure. It seems that the poem did not have success (not propagandistically and not literary and not commercially, it was just a flop), so it wasn't really important. We only have the authors autograph.
      It is a funny source but of very limited historical value, being basically a longer version of the original Dracula Story. The only valuable information is that Vlad was arrested at the Oratia Castle.
      Kind regards, A.W.

      @@CorpusDraculianum Thank you for your clarifying and elaborate answers!
      So, the poem was not the hit of the century then.
      All these manuscript texts, will they emerge in your books?

    • @CorpusDraculianum
      @CorpusDraculianum  Před rokem +1

      @@Linnaeana Of course, as a critical edition. Our series covers the entire tradition of sources about Vlad, without any exceptions.
      Regarding the manuscript tradition (which is, as we say in the video, different from the printed tradition) the chapter in our upcoming book is based on the edition of our former project team member Christof Paulus (who is now professor at the university and had to leave us, unfortunately). He published a German-language edition in 2020 together with another medievalist: "Geschichte und Geschichten. Studien zu den ‚Deutschen Berichten' über Vlad III. Drăculea". If you know to read German, this is a must-read :) Kind regards, A.W.
