  • The Solomon Islands Medical Partnership for Learning, Education and Research (SIMPLER) supports the supervision and training of foreign-trained medical graduates to strengthen the health system. There is an acute shortage of healthcare professionals in the Solomon Islands with a ratio of one doctor for every 4,212 patients, well below the WHO recommended 1:1000 ratio. Medical degrees are not available in the Solomon Islands and there are not enough local specialists to provide graduates with the training and supervision required to become qualified doctors.
Since the program creation in 2015, SIMPLER has mobilised close to 40 Australian volunteer doctors, nurses and other professionals to the National Referral Hospital in Honiara, creating opportunities for volunteers and Solomon Islands healthcare professionals to develop strong relationships and grow in their respective practice.
