Chevrolet Blazer Mechanical Review

- Here’s a look at the Chevrolet Blazer under the hood and underneath the vehicle to see what’s inside and how it works!
The Chevy Blazer is a mid-sized SUV that’s placed between the three-row Traverse and 2-row Equinox in Chevy’s lineup. While it’s name is controversial, Chevy has opted to use its 2.0L Turbocharged LSY engine and 9 speed automatic transmission under the hood. It features variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation and direct injection. In this video we look at the major components under the hood as if you were to own and maintain this vehicle, including the intake, exhaust, fuel system, transmission, suspension, timing chain and drive belt, cooling setup, driveline, brakes and steering.
Overall the Chevrolet Blazer is an average vehicle that will do as most people expect a cross-over to do and perform. However, there lots of evidence of lack-luster build quality and design choices where GM has had to cut costs compared to its rivals in order to make this vehicle fit in as a place-holder vehicle until the Chevy Blazer electric vehicle will take over after 2024.

This is exactly the kind of car review channel I've been looking for. I only care how well a car will hold up, not how impressive it is on paper or at the dealership.
Glad you appreciate it. I try to put a different perspective on it
I enjoy both types of reviews. When I buy a car I'm buying the whole car so I want to know what I'm paying for. Obviously the mechanical aspect is incredibly important, but I also want to know about the amenities, like the infotainment system and how much storage and passenger space it has. I know a lot of gearheads mock reviewers that don't focus on the mechanical aspects of the cars they review but I think it's important to have both types of reviews so we can be better informed as consumers.
This channel is definitely one of the best when it comes to mechanical reviews for sure. Just by watching this review I know I would never buy this car (or any GM car for that matter).
100% .Well said friend.
"Just enough torque to get out of the grass when you go camping."
Love this guy.
Haha you caught that 😏
So freaking hilarious 😂💀
Your attention to detail, your sense of humour, your ability to explain complex mechanics to the public in layman terms, your camera work, your video editing, and yes your toothbrush…I love your videos. Please keep up the high quality work and please stay on CZcams.
I'm glad you appreciate it! Thanks
Dudes sarcasm is on point everytime😂😂😂😂😂😂.
But damn GM got some really shitty parts on that vehicle.
Lmao fr every other second makes the video hella enjoyable to watch 😂
Glad you appreciate the video style, but some of it is true...
@@speedkar99 some of it? Its all true. I mean come on a plastic oil pan, no proper bumper reinforcement and a leaking shock already?? This is unlike other hardcore GM products. Seems like a cheap way out just to get the blazer out there
@@DESTRIAZ Engineered and built on a Friday 🤣
But yeah, at least it’s boosted!
Your sense of humor is so subtle but so savage at the same time. I like it.
Haha I'm glad you like it
Just looking at that plastic oil pan and drain plug turns me off. Like you said,if you run over something the pan can crack and there goes all of your oil. Like they say, “They don’t make them like they used to”! Of all the gadgets like electric water pump and parking brake, the one thing I would like to see is an electric oil primer pump that would pressurize the oil enough before starting the engine and turn off soon after.
Yeah it's not very friendly for those who buy used cars or keep them for a long time.
Electric vehicles will only complicate things more since everything will be electronic ...
People love to shit on them but it's really not the end of the world. A hit bad enough to crack one of them is going to do real damage to a steel or aluminum pan as well. In the case of a cast aluminum pan it likely would crack it right in half.
@@rudolphna54
The true grief is from the warping that will cause leaking later on. If you look at it, there seems to be subtle leakage already. It should be a crime for such a critical area to be skimped on by the manufacturer.
I like the electric water pumps on newer vehicles usually they are out on their own and easier to replace than a timing or belt driven pump
@@speedkar99 Au contraire, it'll be better. Why? Because you are reducing the number of moving parts by an order of magnitude. Probably 2-3 dozen moving parts total compared to hundreds/thousands. No oil changes to forget. No filters to forget to change. No transmissions to blow up. All the sensors, chains, solenoids etc that it takes to make an ICE and a transmission work, gone. There will be teething problems but there should be no doubt that electric vehicles will be far, far more reliable than gasoline cars have ever been.
Absolutely love these reviews. This channel deserves so many more views. Its a testament to the American consumer mindset being more interested in going offroad 2 times in the life of the vehicle than reliability and financial security
Your knowledge of vehicles make your videos interesting. Your car review videos cover aspects of the vehicle that other car reviewers don’t or can’t cover. You need mechanical knowledge to do your type of car reviews. That’s what sets you apart from the others! Keep up the great work! That’s why I’m subscribed!
It’s been a while since the last mechanical review…well worth the wait. Keep em coming
Thanks - your right, I haven't done one of these since last winter.
I Love your reviews! You tell it like it is! You know when and how these components are going to fail...you even know who we are with and what we are doing ..lol Again Fantastic review!
I'm glad you appreciate it... It's an interesting perspective looking under neath a car than from outside
7:05 You even know about my mother-in-law taking her time in the Sears mall. I'm impressed with your world-smarts.
Hey I'm married too lol. But for real ...that's a thing
Thanks for your honest review of these vehicles. I enjoy watching them even though I have committed to keeping and buying 2004-2012 Chevys and Toyotas. As you point out all the plastic parts etc. and I do pretty much everything myself. I have had my fill of trying to keep BMWs and other newer cars reliable w/o spending more than I make.
Absolutely fantastic!! Bro. You gotta do a review on the new pathfinder if you can. I got one and would like to learn as much about it! .
I already saw your breakdown video of the VQ35DE .
Have done 4 years of engineering but no one taught me the way you explain this stuff man!
Appreciate it!
Excellent vid….LOL….dude you crack me up just about every time you put out one of vids. Your content is awesome and informative, but you also toss in some humor. NICELY DONE!
Thanks! I'm glad you appreciate the video style
Thanks for verifying what I had already expected from Chevy / Chinese vehicles... And to think that one of my all time favorite 4x4s was a mid 70s Chevy Blazer.. What a disappointment they have evolved into. Great Channel I always like your take on things..
Thanks for your perspective. Market has changed since the 70's and GM is just trying to compete. I think the vehicle is valid for the current market they just chose the wrong blazer name to put on it.
Liked watching your vehicle mechanical review and your quirky comments.
I'm glad you like my video style
Yeah the commentary always cracks me up.
I would love to see the 4 year follow up mechanical review on this vehicle.
Yawn.... Lol
Steve c lol 😂😂😂😂
Will be a full restauration video 😄.
Or a junk yard failzer teardown
There won't be anything left of it by then, most likely be made of tin for soup or beans cans by then.
Your insight and viewpoints are worth millions. Any automaker would be blessed to have you on their team!
Massive overestimate on your part, Munro is worth millions to automakers
Who is Munro?
I think they would hate me for challenging their descions
Hell yeah the review I needed. Wish it was for the V6 but I covered everything else I'm gonna need to worry about! Will be coming back for sure.
Thank YOU, Great Video & Audio. You added a lot of humor to your Video & love your Toothbrush Pointer.
Thumbs Up & Good Job!!!!!
Have you ever done any Reviews on the 3.6L GM Engine?
That has to be one of the tightest engine bays i've seen on your channel so far.
Plastic engine mounts are a recipe for disaster
For me this didn't seem as bad to work on, because this car has a V6 option they had to make the engine bay big for it to fit.
The old Blazer and this one shares nothing but the name.
For sure!
@@speedkar99
The old SUVs from 70s to early 90 are modestly sized once you walk up and approach. Modern full SUVs are way larger but aesthetically more refined.
Thank YOU again for this GREAT Video. As of today, I just Ordered a new 2024 Chevy Blazer Permier with a 3.6L Engine. Is there any way that you could do a Video on a GM 3.6L Engine for everyone?
Great video man.. if you may, please make a mechanical review on the cheapest Japanese car and compare it with others on how mechanically sound they are..
Been waiting for another mechanical review!!
Me too. It's been a while. Too many engines to tear Down lol
Love your sarcasm!!! Chevy power. Not an off road vehicle for sure. Love your videos.
Glad you appreciate the video style
Thanks for your great review sir. Does this car have a gdi engine?
Excellent Review!
I prefer stamped steel parts over aluminum or plastic at least if you hit something stamped will bend allowing you to still limp it home.. I like that it doesn't have undercladding much easier to clean it up to prevent rusting instead of all that crap trapping the grime and needing to be removed to clean
All in all though I hate these new "suv/crossovers" they are trash to use as a suv and the ones I've test drove handle like crap
For some parts like oil pans, stamp steel is ideal. For others, aluminum is better because it doesn't rust (at least as fast and badly as steel).
@Paul I've owned quite a few vehicles with steel oil pans and 350+ k miles and they still had the factory paint on them I live in the rust belt lol so I'd say somewhere like California they would be perfectly fine
@@speedkar99 either way its metal and I'm happy plastic doesn't belong anywhere near a engine if possible
Great video. You can tell this is 1000% a throw away car that GM doesn't expect to last more than about 5-6 years.
Does GM make anything else these days?
@@IronFishChannel Yeah I think they make some good vehicles, but this isn't one of them lol
This is the way all cars are built. They last a lot longer than the junk from the bad old days.
@@user-tb7rn1il3q I don't see how making parts out of cheap plastic and aluminum vs steel and higher quality aluminum can be good in any circumstance other than guaranteeing the dealer a return customer in couple years.
The bit about hard stopping on brake pedal reminds me of my mucurey monarch I had disk brakes with no vacuum power assist had to use both feet to stop car
Ouch
Damn you ripped this car apart. Thank you for your service
Had a V6 flavor of this as a rental for a bit over a week. Liked the passing power and all that, did the job of a rental just fine, although it has more buttons and controls and safety features than I was used to.
How's the V6's noise vs this 4 banger? I found this one very unrefined
@@speedkar99 Not dissimilar to most every GM V6, tbh. A bit of throaty-ness and growl, but not rough or uneven.
You videos real nice thanks for the videos
Great review. looking forward to more mother-in-law jokes. Agreed on the missing skid plate.
Lol
Glad you understood my joke there
Is it true that the combo of direct injection and a turbo can allow engine oil dilution with gasoline...degrading the ability of the oil to lubricate engine internals ?
Should the transmission fluid be changed at 30k as the manual states or should it be left alone I keep hearing that changing trans fluid is bad, but I also keep hearing it should be done
My 07 civic has plastic mounts too and yes ive broke one in half. Not tuned or boosted just stock. Engine mount snapped in half
U sure it's plastic??
@@speedkar99 100% look up 06-11 civic 1.8l lower torque engine mount
An engine mount collapse will take a new meaning with this one. I can't wait 'till these start dropping engines left and right.
Why? Glass fiber filled polycarb is if anything stronger than aluminum and doesn’t suffer from fatigue stress like alu does, nor corrosion like steel. Maybe you should learn something before you assume even more.
The mounts here are torque mounts, they don't carry the weight of the engine.
You are right, however their failure is rather abrupt with not much elongation before yield... basically no warning before failure
@@speedkar99 that’s fair. I think that overall though glass fiber plastic offers a lot of advantages that people overlook while they shit on it for being plastic. Plastic comes in a lot of flavors, not just shitty ones
"Blasting music while your MIL is in the sears outlet store" 🤣😂🤣
Funny but true. Why did they need such big terminals to boost the battery anyway
This is definitely a vehicle that will be cluttering our junkyards in 10 years time! Haha!
Yeah just look at all the 10+ year old GM's right now in the yards...
Left spring on the right side? Those low hanging fuel lines are not good either.
Great review!
Nice video. Do you know how reliable are those engines?
No experience with them sorry
was fixing my 96 accord and saw the rear bumper also have a plastic crash panel
These will be so collectable in 20 years time, what fantastic engineering. Truly worthy of the Blazer name.
Is it fair to say that General Motors vehicles are beautifully made? 🤔😊
Hmm looking back are there any 20 year old GM's that are collectables right now ... Except for a Corvette ...nope
The recipe for engine failure is shutting down cylinders
Yup, that's why hemi engines get that "hemi tick". My brother just manually shifts his auto so that displacement on demand doesn't engage.
Yeah I don't like cylinder deactivation or start stop with
Honda's VCM killed a lot of their previous J series engine too. Hope their new version of J series is better...
Friend bought a brand new GMC Sierra AT4, and the transmission needed a major repair after 6k.
You are awesome buds!
man i love your comedy show haha. you got me rolling on this vid.
I'm glad you appreciate the video style!
Is everything similar on the v6 version, minus the turbo?
Drywall screw 😂😂😂
Damn GM wants to ruin Blazer name as well🤷🏻♂️
thanks a lot for these awsome reviews 👍👍👍
I hate that screw design. So hard to change a filter....
@@speedkar99 nobody likes drywall screws 😅
Have you done a gen III eco Diesel (Jeep,Ram...)
I couldn't imagine buying one of those. I'll take a K5 blazer any day.
Good choice...if you can find a rust free one
@@speedkar99 Down south they are a little easier to find then the rust belt, but they have gone up in value. My friend has one and swapped in a 5.3 from a Silverado.
Thank you man

JACKPOT 🎰!!!!!! im sold 💰
Swapping spring from left to right.
Thanks a lot
More videos like this, please!
Sure!
I love the looks but I think the 4 cyl is not the choice for me. IMO, GM has never made a good 4 cyl. Love your video's!
I work in the GTA. My boss is a GM fanboy, and he hates the start/stop system. When he got his new leased GM Sierra, he looked up which fuse ran it and pulled it out. He also hates all of this new technology crap that ruins the fun of owning a vehicle and how it’s more difficult to work on your own car.
I live in the Toronto area as well
Could you do a review of a Trax or a Trailblazer?
can you do a review on the latest tahoe/suburban, I feel like that's the only GM model left that's not a small garbage truck
Good idea. If I can find one...
hi could you also do mechanical review on older cars not just relatively new ones?
Hmm how much interest would it have for a previous generation vehicle.
Wondering where would I get them from...
How are the v6 engines? Just got a 2022 v6 awd
3.6? Absolutely garbage
Good morning sir which would be the best mechanically designed car under 25 grand
A used Lexus
@@speedkar99 new car it just feels better mentally new car
Displacement on demand in general is horrible. I'd tune that out asap.
I agree.
On the subject of GM cars, I think it should be cool to see a teardown of either the SOHC or DOHC engine of a Saturn S series. Notably different engine from what the rest of corporate GM was using at the time.
For a modern car, access to replace parts isn't too bad. Quality and reliability are another conversation....
You can’t really judge reliability based on this, but that’s probably an LTG engine, where are noisy but tried and true engines with a good track record. That transmission is the 9-speed co developed by ford and GM and has been really solid so far. And in the last decade American cars generally have really stepped up parts quality. His only actually valid complaints are the omission of skid plates and bumper foam, which is maybe valid but not a normal thing GM does, and also skid plates aren’t really all that useful on this sort of car and i typically see them dragging or flapping on the ground on cars that have them.
I would bet, that GM did not do as poor rear crash components, but trailer hitch kit (propably GM made as there is cover for it) just made them not fit, this is typical.
If your car is rated 5 stars and you want trailer hitch installed take into considerations like two stars less in rear end crash - only factory installed kits are tested, and typical trailer kit is installed by dealer, after manufacturer certified and tested car. This not dangerous or something like that, but about 30cm of crumple zone gets stiffened to make pulling and braking of brakeless trailer possible without damage
Yeah I wonder if they offer these with a proper rear bumper support without the trailer hitch...
@@speedkar99 you could always check online to confirm that he’s correct… took me 2 minutes
Can you do Subaru outback 2.5
The oil pan isn't actually plastic, it's a composite material; infused with several strong materials (dependent on brand). It's actually just as or nearly as strong as a metal pan, they are pretty strong being what they are! Obviously this isn't a replacement for a metal pan, hopefully aluminum oil pan instead of steal.
"composite" will still warp and crack faster than a stamped steel pan
It already has a leak , its plastic , a fancy name for plastic Is "composite material"
This thing has a cooler for engine oil and transmission oil?? That's pretty much what the 1LE Camaros have, except with an added differential cooler!
A plastic oil pan 😳 I never knew that car manufacturers could get away with something like that.
VW GTI has had that for a while. A sign of high quality I guess. 🙂
Soon we won't have an oil pan. Lifetime oil 🤠
and a plastic motormount. It's already like a dustbin....
Great review. I'd spend a bit more CRV or RAV-4.
Good idea, if you want to keep it long term
L82 3100 V6 teardown when? 👀
Ecotec is good engine sir?
Replace undercarriage plastics it will be good... not bad👍🏿
Who's gonna pay for that?
The forthcoming Blazer EV looks night and day better, but I wonder if the quality of the suspension components will be just as crappy .
Yes it will be worse. They had to compensate for that tech somewhere
Surprised they didnt make the exhaust system plastic. Are the cylinder head made of plastic as well?
Soon it'll all be plastic around an electric motor and battery
@@speedkar99 huhu. I dont want this future! Cars will be disposable and no more classics.
Nailed it. Despite what the name promises, it's clearly just another generic Gm cuv thing for people to poodle around in never leaving the pavement. It's depressing knowing how phoned in the whole thing is, yet they will still sell a bazillion of the horrible things.
Well it's what people want ..CUV. Cheap. Stylish.
They should have built it on the robust colorado chassis
8:44 “Some yield to torque type fastener” 😂 On point, sir.
Haha I said that on purpose
What a PILE. I cant see this thing lasting more than 10-12 years...
That's a stretch. Should be 4 yrs at most
@@moeanthony9308 Your probably right, that thing has everything I hate about modern cars all in one package.
Re: 10-15 year old Equinox sitting in the junkyard right now
I don't have high hopes on the upcoming Blazer EV if they keep putting questionable plastic parts
I think they'll be more cost cutting underneath since they'll have to justify a big heavy battery
Can’t wait for the check eng light
CEL is a feature. Its how you know the quality of your vehicle, the light is on from day 1 and stays on... forever.... those are some quality lightbulbs baby
This engine has already been worked on before I reviewed it. There were missing fasteners and broken clips.
May you do a VW Taos?
Torque to yield studs are reusable, just tq to spec & use red loctite or spot weld the nut on.
Haha
You need to make an illustration of the ultimate vehicle. Maybe it needs a bumper where you customize your own lights and things. I see cars with smashed headlights and people are tired of vandals or can't find replacement housings. A light bar is installed. OEM lights should be cheaper to replace. They damage too easy....
I could see someone hitting something in the road and easily breaking that lower radiator hose clean off.
True. Especially being made of plastic.
Or even just running over a snow bank
Waiting for your mother-in-law to come out of the seers outlet store. Wow, we really went down a dark alley there.
It's funny but it's true....
That AWD system isn't 4wd, so what's it have for a f/r torque splitter?
At the transmission there's no space for a f/r differential, that housing looks like a 90° box.
I see an extension on the differential, that could contain a torque converter, but that's copying Honda!
I noted the motor on the transfer case which engages the AWD clutch. It's done right at the front
can you please do the same on MB2012 if you can , its very informative
What Benz is that?

i think the blazer comes with 3 cylinders too
@6:39 its not how big it is, its how you use it. ;)
Good one 😏
Do you think government of Canada and US will succeed or fail with battery electric? I think it will fail. Maybe Europe but doesn't work here in North America unless the electricity is from hydrogen and not battery.
Is there any good Chevy/GM car out there? If there is, please do a mechanical review for that!
Corvette? 🤣
From personal experience at shops. I've deemed 2015-2019 GM Silverado and Sierras to be the BEST... only issues I've seen is leaky transmission lines. The V8 motors they have are SOLID and reliable is used nicely and maintained APPROPRIATELY. I've served livery trucks and SUV by GM and I've seen 250K miles on them with little to no issues and minor seepage/leaks
Sure, most of them are good. The best right now are the rear-drive based
Lots of nitpicking here but nothing that actually means much. The car seems mildly vulnerable to damage but plastic skid plates fall off a lot anyways particularly on nissans it always seems like. The drivetrain is a relatively tried and true one. This car lacks a lot of refinement but there’s no reason that it wouldn’t last a long time with normal use. It doesn’t seem nearly as abusable as normal GM trucks but then again, neither are its subaru competitors, kings of getting fucked up in colorado winters
It's not hard to work on but this vehicle fails to stand out. It's just meh that will last meh (see all the equinox and traverse in the junkyard right now).... It can be improved
The doug that we need
Sure 🤓
That SUV is made to last 100-120k miles. A junkyard queen like the altimas and Hyundais.
Plastic engine mounts! Cost cutting really knows no bounds. I also expect the Blazer EV to be as disposable as this thing is.
I agree. They'll need to reduce the weight on the EV to compensate for the battery
Other reviewers would take it offroad? A fwd open diff karenmobile?
Edit: it's awd, but still, it's not made for any offroad
The name plate suggests off road
