Virtual Tourmalet versus the real deal! Find out how they compare?

  • With spring in the air and the mountains calling, being in a current lockdown in the French Pyrénées has thrown quite the proverbial spanner in the works when it comes to actually riding these beautiful big peaks once again. Adjusting to a 'new norm' is quite the challenge, staying fit, motivated and, let's be honest, sane when you're not allowed to ride outside is a challenge in itself, so I've had to enlist the ol' creative grey matter to come up with a few ways to stay on top of the game during these unprecedented times that we all face.
I've been dreaming of riding the Tourmalet again for quite some time, so I rigged up the Kickr and Kickr Climb, synced up the route and got after it, albeit this time in the virtual world, to see just how it compares to 19 kilometres of mountain greatness, AKA the real McCoy.
This was the first time I've followed a route on the trainer and I have to say that I was impressed by the result. Staying motivated when on the static bike is a mission in itself and anything that helps in that regard is welcomed with open arms.
The only question now is, which will be the next virtual mountain to tackle? Answers on a postcard or in the comments below.....
If you're interested in the gear I'm using then check out Wahoo's wizardry over at:
    Kickr - eu.wahoofitnes...
    Kickr Climb - eu.wahoofitnes...
    Element Roam - eu.wahoofitnes...
I hope you enjoyed this ride and it may spark a little inspiration to help you through these testing times. What's for sure is that the mountains aren't going away any time soon, so with a little patience and perspective we'll be exploring them again before we know it! And when that time comes if you'd like to enjoy them with me then check out The Col Collective Cycling Tours over at thecolcollectiv....
For more help and advice visit thecolcollectiv... and become part of our col community by signing up for our free mountain inspired newsletter.
Let this be a time of learning, a time of perspective and self development that we use as a positive to become a better version of ourselves, able to cope with and overcome adversity just like when we conquer and overcome the mountains, one pedal stroke at a time.

I was just talking to my partner about you last night. I've been watching a lot of your videos in the last few weeks and she sees me watching them so knows who you are. Was just saying how your cycling tour business must be hit pretty hard at the moment ☹️ I sincerely hope things can get back on track soon. You're an inspiration. I've never been abroad with my bike but sustenpass is on my list once this has blown over. That's due to your excellent videos. Thanks for another video. If there's anything I can help with to make that experience come to life for you just ask. Take care, Mike

Welcome back to the Interweb Mike, have missed your videos for some time now! Missing the Pyrenees as back in the Essex countryside with more relaxed restrictions here (left Luchon one week prior to Lockdown). It would be interesting to hear your views on living in the Pyrenees (good & bad) in a video and how you are finding running the touring business, perhaps it will give a better understanding of the difficulty in making as many videos as you have in the past? I know from my experience of having a second home there that the Pyrenees are a real gem but for example I avoid going there in November as it is a ghost town (major gap between Summer and Winter activities)! Keep safe and motivated!!

Good to see you back. As an irish lad i got into cycling from watching the TDF. i was inspired by Tourmalet. I first climbed Tourmalet when i was 17. I ended up living in London for about 18 years. We moved to Pau in 2014 for family reasons. I have cycled Tourmalet from both directions so many times, i have also run up Tourmalet on both sides and even competed in the local trail running scene taking on the Pic. Where abouts are you in the region? We teach indoor cycle classes locally and run yoga and pilates classes also. A group of us rode from Pau last summer to Tourmalet for the 100 years of the Maillot Jaune. What a Party. Good luck with the lockdown, we are taking on the Spring classics every sunday to keep motivated. Stay safe, stay strong and stay healthy. pat

As a sidenote, a climb I hope to do and would be interesting to see on the channel is a little known neighbour to the Colle del Nivolet, the climb to Lago di Teleccio. Massive dam at the end of a large cirque (as I believe it is called in France, I don't know the Italian.)

    • @TheColCollective
      @TheColCollective  Před 4 lety

Hi Mark, thanks for the comment. Naturally I've been putting the Kickr and Climb well and truly through their paces!! I used to have a very old (I think I could actually use the word 'ancient') turbo trainer that I did about a gazillion miles on so I was a bit late to the game with these 'smart' trainers. The difference when I did make the switch was huge! The overall ride quality and feel is quite something, as is the lack of noise. My former indoor trainer sounded like the washing machine was on full spin! As someone that enjoys climbing, the Kickr Climb is a neat bit of gear. I find that it comes into its own when I follow a route or climb like I did in the video as you just get on and ride and it does the rest. While the overall feel of training on a static bike is different to being out on the road, I reckon the Kickr and Climb combination is about as good as you can get for an indoor set-up and with loads of different apps and virtual experiences to tap into I'm actually finding it a lot of fun (never thought I'd say that a few years back). Plus the quality and repeatability of workout that you can do indoors is pretty darn amazing do if you've got limited time or specific fitness goals then it's spot on. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching, stay safe and be well. Mike

What I am asking myself all the time: I like to ride on a low cadance ~75-80 (or feeling comfortible with it) but all the "professional" guys are having a way more high cadance. So, my question: Should i work on my ability to spin faster or should i just go with low cadance and power (which seems to exhaust me less)? Thanks for anwers and thoughts!

So are you guys allowed to drive somewhere to exercise? We can exercise here, but only in the vicinity of our home.

Hang on a minute. Each time we view you from the front, your laptop is closed - flat on the table i.e. your ride screen is closed. Each time we see you from behind, it's open. lol. I'm being a trouble maker lol. It seems to me, from the perspective of making this video, you did the commentary after your ride. Interesting breaking it all down lol. Thanks anyway. Good video.

Hi Mike - we missed you. I guess you can visualise every lump and bump of Tourmalet but for the rest of us on the other side of the planet some extra visualisation helps. I use BigRingVR - how about you drag your computer out and use your trainer with BRVR? Touramlet is www.bigringvr.com/Ride.aspx?rideID=2185 However given that you have done Tourmalet maybe a virtual Ventoux? www.bigringvr.com/Ride.aspx?rideID=2284 or Zoncolan or?? Thanks for your content

Hi Andrew, I've been giving the Kickr Climb a good roasting the last weeks and it's become a good friend indeed! I used to jack the front end of the bike up with books but as the Climb adjusts the gradient dynamically it's about as good as it gets to simulate climbing indoors. Hope that helps. Stay well. Mike

virtual cant compare to road....road is far superior if youre going to claim to have ridden any mountain....weather, road conditions and youre own on bike conditions....road every time....
