Some older planes worth considering: Stinson 108, Cessna 120/140, Piper Tripacer or Pacer. I picked up a Stinson 108 a few month’s ago, freshly recovered fabric aircraft, low time engine, 900 lb useful load, 4 seats, cruises at 100 knots.
I managed to pick up a Cherokee 180 for under $40k last year, but once it got modern radios and ADSB in and out it broke out well past that threshold. 😆
The avionics added another $25k, working through other gremlins related to the low hours over many years (120 hours since the overhaul in 2000) is on its way to costing another $10k as I put it on leaseback. Today I’m paying an invoice for replacing the alternator, starter, and intercom. 2 of the 3 of those were discovered to be non-tso or otherwise not certified for use in certified aircraft so I have learned something new to watch for in the prebuy inspection process.

Great videos! Can you do a video on top planes (for the price) with modern, glass cockpit avionics like the G1000? I'm looking to purchase my first plane in the next year.
Crazy to see how much these planes have gone up in price from last year. I was in the market for a 4 seater to finish my training but decided to hold up for now. Really digging the sundowner, but might have to taken a look at that traveler. Currently train on a warrior ii and would like to stay with a low wing. But, need to see where the market will be doing this year
Hey Mike! Can you do a light sport category version of this series? I am currently training in Evektor Sportstars which are a great plane and they are available used in the 40 to 50 range some with parachutes as well. The Tecnam 2002 is an awesome plane as well.
Love your videos. Love the Grumman and will start looking at the Beechcraft as well. Good luck finding a Grumman for sale right now. Last I saw was a mid time engine Tiger with avionics as old as the plane going for 90K. Should include the Cherokees in this list. But, in all honesty, your prices are super low for right now. Not sure what inside scoop you have but all of those planes are selling for 25-30% higher due to he rush for luxury items right now. Planes, boats, second homes, etc. People are running out with cash in hand and way overpaying for everything right now. Sure, you can find a 172 in that range, but would it be safe to fly? I'm seeing them mostly in the 70-100K range and people are paying it.
If I could find these at the prices listed, that would be nice. A Tomahawk is tough to find period, and the Traveler or Tiger typically won't be much lower than $50k. The 150 and 172, sure, they range all over the place. Albeit, I'm looking on sites such as controller, trade-a-plane, and barnstormer (and not in person right now), but finding planes at the lower end of the price range and being in decent shape and not like 2000 hours SMOH is a trick.
I really like these videos, but I know it's challenging to make a cost statement right now. I'm seeing 172's (non-scrap) listed for over $100k. Combined with the current agenda to get rid of 100LL (because 'environment'), it is a steeper uphill battle to get back into flying every day. I hope better times will come soon...
Cessna 172 that needs little work are now over the $40,000 mark. The Sundowners have followed suit and are now in the 40 plus range. If you are looking for a descent 4 seat that makes the 40 thousand dollar mark would be the Sundowners little brother, the Beechcraft Musketeer. 160HP 4 seater that is a great flyer.
A 150 with the tail dragger conversion with the 150 hp conversion. Add the long range tanks if it doesn't already have 'em. Excellent STOL and mountain performance. There're probably some out there just like this, 150's have been around for 65ish years. My dream anyways.
There is no such thing as a budget airplane. Add in the cost of insurance, annuals, AD's, hanger or ramp rent, fuel and getting a pilot license. And, really be thankful most people do not fly because if they did they would fly like they drive.
I'm wanting to make a decent living in aviation, but I'm not certain I'll be able to obtain a class1 certificate. Are there any ways to make money in aviation without being able to fly commercially?
As you say the 172 can fly 500, 600 even 700 miles, Im assuming thats on one tank. Im looking for buying a crosscountry to literally cross the country for airsoft, and most likely multiple times. What would be the best, cheapest plane for this?
I like these videos but honestly I'm just not seeing these types of prices in the market. I can't find Tomahawks or Travelers really at all meaning it's a sellers market on them. I see 172s in this range but they are almost always a few hours away from MOH time and in dire need of avionics updates and paint.
Beechcraft Sundowner for me. But it does have retractable gear which I understand is significantly higher insurance, and more maintenance. Does anybody know the premium for insurance?
Buying an airplane is one thing . . .keeping it is another! It's not like paring your car in your garage, you need to rent or buy a hanger . . .big bucks, insurance is rediculous, mandatory inspections are costly, then you have FAA crap that is never ending, just to give them job security. So, for the cost of a car, go buy a nice car, take multiple vacations each year, or go buy a boat that you can park in your property or use at a much lessor cost, and "share" the cost of someone else's "bought it for the cost of a car" airplane. Experience talking here!
I'm having a hard time considering any of these aircraft. For the price of a 50 year old C-150 you can get an almost new Sonex. They both seat 2, but the Sonex will fly almost 700 miles on a single tank of gas, at about 150-170 MPH and only burn 5 GPH in fuel. To me it's a no brainer when considering airplanes in this price range.
With a new video I expected to see new prices. Everything is stupid expensive this year. You find me a traveler or tiger for 40k, color me surprised and let me know
So I have been looking for 6 months and all of the aircraft that you mention here if they are flyable are no where near the 40K or less price, with the exception of a 152. I would really like to see an actual plane out of the list given that is in good flyable and well maintained condition in your video that are for sale within the price you are stating. I am working on my PPL and keep looking for one to purchase and nothing that even comes close to that small of a price. I really enjoy your videos but this is the first one made that makes me shake my head.
Don't look for inexpensive airplanes at Class B, C, or D airports. Be proactive and go to the out of the way airports on Saturday mornings and visit with the old timers and A&P if available. I bought my 172G in annual and flying condition for under 15k from a gentleman who was giving up flying. A friend of mine just bought a 150 for 10k because the owner lost his medical. These planes were not advertised. You might also want to post a notice in the pilot lounge. Make sure you note that you are working on your ppl. Pilots generally love to help each other out. Best of Luck!
So we have always been able to find 150s and 152s for these prices. I am pretty tall (upper and lower height)so only 172s (tight but workable) or 182's work for me. My father who is an A&P and Inspector has been looking as well. The prices right now have sky-rocketed. Even took a trip to AZ to view several but AF hours were well over 12K and they still wanted 80-100K. If you hear of anything that is reasonable let me know and I will jump on it. Have several people looking from our small airports through 3-5 different states and the only deals we can find currently are in Canada and there are entry restrictions still in effect.
You have certainly done a great job looking! You are right about the prices sky rocketing as well. I'm sure if you are patient you will find what you are looking for. Just a thought, you may want to call around various airpark communities. This is where many old pilots congregate that the public does not have access to. GL on your search!
Great plane. Safe and easy to fly. Super fuel efficient. But not a cheap plane to buy. Maybe find a high time older one for barely sub 200k more likely 250k.
@@ogn1583 I was thinking about a leaseback myself. But you are right, Aircraft inventory is super low right now. People are buying left and right.
