I had to put this video on pause after the nuclear incident in Japan. Luckily it wasn't a nuclear cause of death for Gloria.
i mean, the supernatural can often excite the part of the mind that race at the prospect of the unknown, and because of the natural survival instinct it usually fears the possibility of death, as its now a freely opened scenario.
with a nerve gas, thats a likely guarantee. you KNOW it could kill you, and that its now present within the situation. that fear itself is outright validated within the context, rather than being merely on the table.
Even if she did put straight up oven cleaner on her skin, how heartbreaking is it that she was in so much pain that she would resort to that

My mum passed away from cancer over a year ago, and what I learnt is that people have no empathy for people in that situation. My mum was a smart lady, but even she bought alternative medicines because she was DESPERATE for any sort of treatment that would actually work. I remember her looking at me with tears in her eyes saying "what have I got to lose? Might aswell try anything." So people calling terminally ill patients "stupid" for trying alternative medicine make me furious, because really it shows how awful our medical system can be and the lengths people will go to survive. So thank you for showing Gloria the empathy and humanity she deserved instead of making a mockery of her struggle x
My mother was diagnosed with aggressive chronic illness when she was young. Once I was looking through her old stuff and found a lot of news paper cut outs about local spiritual healers and alternative medicine. I could only imagine how devastated and desperate she felt, trying everything she could to find cure. The fact that she grew up in the Soviet Union where many ppl were scientifically sceptic kinda makes it even sadder for me. Brings me to tears everytime I think about it.
upd: for more context, those spiritual healers were advertised as being able to cure that exact illness, and my mom wasn't ever a spirituality freak before and now. Sorry if I'm overexplaining.

these were exactly my thoughts tbh. I've never lost anyone to cancer (i hope you're doing okay) but its really not that hard to empathize. some people are just weird little goblins that never learned empathy and unfortunately their opinions seem more prominent because of the internet.
Many people watch too many movies and tv. A lot of people don’t take life serious.
Thank you for showing so much respect for Gloria. She wasn’t a ghost story, or a plot point, or a sideshow attraction. She was a human being who didn’t deserve what happened to her. Anyone who has seen cancer knows that nobody deserves that

my dad died from cancer at the age of 37. He was diagnosed only six months before his death and in these 6 months my family tried absolutely everything to give him more time.
If you had told us rubbing oven cleaner on his entire body would help, we would have gladly done that.
People need to understand that Gloria was a young mother. She had kids, a family, people who depended on her.
I hate that people judge her for trying desperate measures, but I love that you made sure not to do that.

When you have tried all the conventional and proven medicine, and you're about to pass, it won't cause suffering to try to more desperate alternative stuff. The worst that can happen is death, but that is close anyway.
Especially because it wasn't her fault the way the oven cleaner reacted to the oxygen mask and defibrator, there's no way she could have possibly known.

The moment I realized what the defibrillator did, I gasped and had to pause my video to look at my keyboard. The amount of perfect accidental steps to make this exact scenario happen, when in any other situation the nurse and doctor's responses are correct and standard for ER care, is chilling.

The Doctor is underrated, he *caught* a falling colleague, *remained in the makeshift gas chamber,* and doesn't get the credit he deserves because of one simple fact: He took his oaths seriously and tried to save her life even though she clearly was the source.
Her family thinking she didn't take DMSO could easily be explained away by her just being embarrassed by how desperate she was and not telling anyone and doing it in secret.
We don't tell our family every single detail of our lives especially if it's something we know we're going to get criticized over

@@BlackKnightOfTheWindthis is so true. When a loved one dies in a way that may seem especially weird or hard to understand some people will cling to conspiracy theories and start blaming others when in reality it was a series of unfortunate events that took their loved one from them.
@@ScottishBasset It could also be that by saying Gloria did use DMSO, it would make the whole situation "her fault". i.e. It would make it so that the events that transpired in the ER were caused by her actions, even if it is indirect. They might've wanted to avoid saying that to prevent possible legal actions against Gloria's estate or just because they don't want their dead loved one to be "blamed" for it.
@@HeyLeFay This is what I was thinking. That if they wanted legal action against the hospital, admitting that she screwed around with degreaser to cure cancer could seriously gank their chances of getting anything out of those legal actions.
This story is so sad because for once, no one did anything wrong. The paramedics, doctors, and nurses all did exactly what they would/should have done with any patient, but it just so happened to be the randomly imperfect combination that killed this poor woman.
And yet her family still blames the hospital for all purposes was probably just very bad luck for Gloria

@@dnidaz2553 it’s hard not to blame the doctors and other people who worked on your loved one when they pass. It’s part of grieving. And especially cause they didn’t know what caused this for a long time, she was sick already but she got deathly ill extremely quickly once in the hospital. Not knowing what caused this it would be very easy to blame the hospital, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

She was really young, too. 31 is of no age to be worrying about death. We need to eradicate this awful disease, even if it takes a thousand years of research it would be worth it.

It’s so cruel to think someone actively dying of cancer was “stupid enough” to take desperate measures to cure it. It is so easy to be a healthy person and say “Well *I* would never take dangerous chemicals like that I would just-“ but you honestly can never understand that kind of desperation until you are in that position yourself. yeah, no one should have the blame put on them in this situation because it’s just very unfortunate things happening all around with no ill-intent from anyone whatsoever. I’m a Respiratory Therapist and work in a ER. Blood samples get disposed of in a Biohazard container that gets taken out daily. So her blood being “lost” is really just good blood disposal protocol
Don't they keep it though if someone dies before it gets tested, for whatever postmortem testing might be needed? Also why didn't they take blood on the first autopsy? The whole thing is just so weird.

@@abrahamwashington8579 I am not an ER doctor/nurse but I have been into the er 20-30 times and I can corroborate that anything that gets your blood in it that is not sent to the lab does go into a biological waste container, usually a bin hung up on the side of the room (at least here in WI in the U.S.)
Edit: for Penrod's questions I think that it is more than likely that as they were leaving or coming back in to clean up the vial was just lying around and not yet labelled, meaning it would go into the biological waste bin. I cannot attest to my unconscious blood draws, but when conscious they have you see the label with your name on it to get your confirmation that it was properly labelled and since she was conscious when she entered they my have been waiting for that.
NOTE- My experiences have been in the last decade or so, medical practices may have changed drastically between her time and now but it is better to state the supporting evidence you have.

The fact that she was basically terminal and tried this in a last ditch effort to save herself for her family, is absolutely heartbreaking. She tried to save herself and became a toxic weapon on accident and now, all we know her as is a sideshow attraction. That's honestly making me cry, I miss my wife.

I don’t know if this helps or not, but her family is protecting her dignity in the only way they can. I’m sure they know, in their own way. But she did it all for them, I can understand why they’d do this for her.

maybe it made it worse but, i doubt she would have survived even if the oxygen mask and defib werent used. it already sounds like she had kidney failure before the oxygen mask, and with the elevated amount of diomethal-sulfoxide i doubt her liver would have been able to process it all, likely leading to a slower, more painful death
You said cancer and garlic smell and I IMMEDIATELY thought DMSO. My organic chemistry professor told us that he was working with it in a lab, and I believe he got just a bit on his glove and it's potent enough that within minutes he could taste garlic. He also told us it's been used as a cancer treatment, usually self medicated. Also, my mother read in a magazine just this year that it's some kind of miracle cure I had to tell her it's not, and I hadn't even heard this story yet.
Edit: aaaand most of what I just said gets explained lmao. I'll add what I told my mom: even if it cures ANYTHING it must be taken with doctor supervision. If you self medicate, youre missing a lot of info about dosing, interactions, etc. It's just dangerous. And really sad looking at specific cases like this one. I really feel for Gloria. I know how complex biochemistry is, and if I were diagnosed with cancer, you know... I might just try something I likely shouldn't. It's desperation, not stupidity. It's something that people put out there as an option, and it sounds like she followed it up. I can't blame her. The rest seems like a freak accident, that we can hopefully learn from at least.
And sidenote, it's been a year since I graduated college and being able to predict the outcome made me feel like I haven't forgotten anything. Comforting.
I have used it pretty extensively and I've only ever tasted the copper 'blood' taste. My trainer, a nurse, who recommended it to me mentioned that she tasted garlic.
The edit about remembering it from college is so real. I just started college as a biochem major ane being able to piece together the chemical reactions was kinda comforting that maybe I am learning.

Man, I’d heard of the ‘toxic lady’ before, but never heard the actual story. I was born in the exact same hospital only five months prior to her emergency intake there. Sad to see she’d been reduced down to a title that sounds like a freakshow exhibition. Thank you for humanizing Gloria with your retelling of her tragic story, Wendi.
The DSMO in her blood can be explained by the fact that if you don’t empty your bladder or can’t empty your bladder, everything will start to go to your bloodstream as an escape route. Her organ failure caused her to be unable to urinate, which could have caused the DSMO to seep into her blood and her colon (explaining the fecal matter)
A doctor elsewhere in this comments section said the feces is best explained by the first autopsy, since cleanliness after the process is a very low priority for a dead patient. “Everything goes into the viscera bag, including any traces of feces.”
My father was treated with DMSO for a bone marrow transplant as part of his cancer treatment, and he had that weird fruity garlic smell for like a week. It was like a mix between overripe apples and crushed garlic that you could smell any time you walked in the same room as him. Just an overpoweringly sweet, fermented, rotten garlic smell that was incredibly distinct. And that was the modern, diluted formulation.

As a cancer survivor myself, I in no doubt why Gloria would try the oven cleaner as a remedy. She isn’t stupid, being diagnosed with cancer is one of the scariest things on the planet, on top of being terminal or treatment not being an option, being so desperate to try anything to cure it or at least deal with the symptoms. Her course of actions is 100% valid and makes sense as someone whose gone through cancer also. Anyone who thinks she’s stupid or dumb for doing this has never understood going through that with no way of dealing or treating it.
Yeah, people don't get how desperate something like that makes you until they experience it. People belittling her as dumb is just shameful on so many levels.

If I had been told that DMSO would have relieved even a small fraction of my Nana’s pain as cancer killed her I would have helped my mom; aunt and the hospice nurse apply it.

After THREE autopsies, no wonder the heart was missing and their was occult fecal matter. It's not often that we keep an entire organ in medical autopsies (They usually just take a sample for histology and then the rest of the organ goes back in the viscera bag. Most places put the bag back in the body when they send them to the funeral home/crematory), but it's not unheard of. And sometimes organs just have to be taken in whole and set in the formalin for a long time because of the state that they are in before they can even be prosected and sent for histological samples. And with her medical conditions, I can only imagine that her bowels were not looking good. Even when being as careful as possible, I've still sometimes perf'd a bowel while eviscerating someone who because of illness had really delicate tissue. Shit happens. And no matter how long you soak the bowel in water, and no matter how much water you run while doing so, you're gonna get shit in places it probably shouldn't go when running the bowel. And then once that gets plopped back into the viscera bag with all the other prosected organs, the fecal matter is just going to get mixed in. Except for microbiology samples, most things in a medical autopsy aren't stringently sterile like in surgery. They're dead. They can't get an infection and die.

Before you get called a liar for saying "we," I'm curious; would you say this is a situation *so weird* they would have taken the heart, samples, ect, and *not told anyone but the family?* There were investigators, there was so much chaos, it was unprecedented.
The fact the blood was "lost" (likely properly disposed of) screams of "We're doing the best we can!" And I wanna reiterate, I'm not saying you're lying. Other people will though lol.

This is the problem with those Occam's Razor types. In this world, the most straightforward answers usually *aren't* the actual truth.
To me it just sounds like someone had to put down SOMETHING for the cause of the event, and 'mass hysteria' basically equated to 'hell if we know' at the time. Without the understanding of all the chemistry going on I can understand why people would be so confused.

it's kinda tragic that I didn't even realize this is the first time I've heard her talked about as a person and not a body. I've watched many videos on this case over the last 5 or so years and I guess I never noticed that aside from her cancer diagnosis, and that background, Gloria was a body that was doing all of this to other people, instead of the woman she was, going through one of the most terrifying deaths imaginable. the shift to recognizing her as the victim in this is nice. I think the really villain is the people peddling dangerous cures to desperate sick people. I'd say there needs to be a punishment for that, but that would just validate the conspirators even more.

When he mentioned the garlic smell and her being covered in a clear substance I immediately thought of DMSO. We use it at our vet clinic. And you smell/taste garlic after making physical contact with it, such as if you accidentally get it on your hand when applying to an animal.

Thank you for humanizing Gloria. When you are in pain, or you get news as bad as cancer, it's sometimes hard to even think straight, you will do whatever you can to live, even if it's something as dangerous as taking cleaning chemicals. I hope more people who watch this video gain that empathy for her.
This is a common issue with people who fall victim to scams, mlms, alt medicine, televangelists, cults, etc. People think they're "stupid" for being desperate, sometimes for their lives. All people are still people and have a story behind their decisions.
I've felt the desire to clean myself on the inside, and I'm not even seriously mentally ill. I imagine it can't be too huge of a leap for someone who's very sick to drink bleach.

Reminds me of when coronavirus was just becoming an issue and the media was fear mongering and those people ingested fish tank cleaner to protect themselves from it and the wife was hospitalized and the husband died. People mocked them online despite one literally dying and the other seriously harmed and now a suddenly a widow but I can sympathize with being that afraid of something that you don’t think rationally.

I was recently in the hospital for and extended stay of cancer treatments, and one day a nurse came and took 11 vials of blood from me.
She came back 15 minutes later apologizing profusely because she accidentally put them in the “disposal area”, and they got thrown out, and had to take 11 more.
I was in the hospital for dengue fever in 2022, and had to have blood samples taken everyday to monitor my platelet count.
I think we put in a request for a separate test to confirm my blood type, but for some reason, this required them to extract 1-2 *more vials* of blood (dunno why they couldn't just analyze the sample they took for the platelets but whatever).
I never got the results from those since the staff apparently forgot to process it and those samples were never heard from again.
Dayum. This is one of those "truth is stranger than fiction" moments.

Ex ER Nurse here: Nobody eats dinner when working a busy shift. Even less when there's a cardiac arrest patient coming to the door. PLUS, the DMSO4 didn't even need to be vaporized. If it was in a trace concentration, the intubation into the lungs with high amounts of positive-pressure oxygen could have aerolized the DMSO4 and dispersed it into the room.
This is exactly what my wife said - she's a respiratory therapist.

I was thinking about that this whole time! I’d heard the case study before without the proposed answer and I figured it had to do with some nerve agent. I did EMS before nursing and they did a pretty dang good job on teaching us about how if multiple people are impacted by the same unknown cause (especially with new onset after arriving on the scene), the first thing to suspect is related to the environment! I can only imagine how scary it would have been to be working that code and watching your colleagues fall out on top of trying to save a young woman’s life. Codes are hard enough with all the chaos - things such as a missing syringe or body parts missing after two autopsies seem logical, as traumatizing as it may be to the family.
Mystery solved. I first heard this story on the BuzzFeed unsolved series and always thought she must have been taking some kind of holistic or alternative medicine for the cancer. The DMSO explains everything. Especially since they observed her chest was glossy - if she was having heart problems, chest pain and/or trouble breathing she probably put the degreaser all over her chest, where it would make direct contact with the defibrillator. I'm surprised they didn't think to wipe her down before using the defib but then again, there's no time for that if she's coding.
They are *machines* in those moments. They've got all the info needed in their heads, which is how the coordination is so good.
Unfortunately, when *this* freak event happens, well you know... I don't blame them though
That poor woman. Desperate to cure her cancer, she falls more ill and in the hospital’s attempt to save her, it sets off a chain of events that proves chaotic for so many. I can’t imagine what she was going through!

My mom is a heavy smoker, I've been telling her for years that she needs to quit I dread the day that she gets diagnosed with cancer but hopefully that day will never come. She was only in her 30s. She shouldve had her whole life ahead of her. To find out that she was dying, leaving behind her family. I could never blame her for doing anything it takes. It's just so tragic.

It's one thing to want to help yourself and it's another thing to assume you can take cancer into your own hands and find a miracle cure scientists haven't found after almost centuries, that's just absolutely idiotic, especially since her lack of foresight and common sense lead to the death of others so she indirectly murdered a few people because she thought she could alleviate her own symptoms, which is what everyone who's sympathizing with her forgets to mention lol. I have family who passed from cancer and cancer survivors, none of them attempted to do anything this heinous despite how desperate they were, there's desperation and then there's being delusional.

@@that_deadeyegamer7920 are you kidding? no one, not even a chemist or doctor would have thought it would turn into a nerve gas of all things. there's a good chance she knew of the negative effects and didn't even expect it to magically cure her. when you're in that situation, there's really nothing else to do. as far as she and anyone else knew, the absolute worst case scenario is that she suffers some negative effects from the chemical and it doesn't help treat her cancer. even then, it still would've helped with her pain so that she can give more of her remaining life to her family, and there was no way anyone could've know it would become harmful to others. in conclusion, take the stick out of your ass and have some empathy. she experienced a series of terrible events that led to her death. none of the events at the hospital were her fault.
As a cancer survivor myself, you will become DESPERATE for ANYTHING to ease your suffering. The nurses tending to me on the Oncology floor didn't properly rehydrate me after my first round of chemo. When they sent me home I was constantly dehydrated and was unable to keep anything down- not even water. My stomach would not hold anything and it got to the point where I was begging, pleading even to my parents to get me anything with CBD just so I could be able to drink water and not puke it back up.
I can totally see and understand a mother willing do try anything if she wasn't able to afford the medical care, even if its something unproven and outlandish like an oven degreaser.
Also the perfect storm for all of that to just come together to cause that is absolutely astronomical. You would honestly think the hospital staff would stop and try to clean the stuff off her chest before putting the paddles on her but I guess every second counts when it comes to cardiac arrest.
Man, the second I heard DSMO was theorized to cure cancer I knew where it was going and I just felt sad. She definitely didn't take DSMO because she was stupid or something but because she was desperate.
I’ve heard this story around 4 times now through different sources, and it never gets less bizarre. It’s one of those stories that at first seems obviously exaggerated, but there is a TON of documentation about it, down to what medication she was given
Several decades have passed since then, and you can really tell from the details. So many years were spent trying to untangle this mess of mysteries, and the driving force was the question: „HOW?“

Poor thing. I’ve been sick for long periods of time before, and I get how desperate you can feel for a solution. I can’t imagine that feeling over something that you know for sure you could loose your life over, especially with a child who depends on you. She doesn’t deserve to be called stupid for being in a desperate situation.
I am an Emergency Physician. Learning about Gloria in medical school around a decade ago was simply fascinating. Her emission of Dimethyl sulfate was a popular theory even back when I was a medical student.

She actually didnt die from any of the toxic fumes. She died from the cancer. Everyone else just had to deal with the insane situation her death eventually caused.

If Ramirez's family is adamant she didn't use the de-greaser, it could be that she bought an alternative medicine that didn't say exactly what was in it. My grandmother bought some weird stuff when she had cancer and that was recently, I imagine in the 80's it was so much more unregulated
The degreaser was the alternative medicine. He explains it in the video how the de-greaser and its component is a alternative medicine for cancer.

I wanted to comment on the family denying she took DSMO as a treatment. it's very likely that if Gloria was feeling desperate enough to try drain cleaner as a treatment method, she felt embarrassed and didn't want her family to know. their adamant denial now could be them either not believing she would do that, or refusing to accept that she'd do it and not tell them. I can only begin to imagine what that situation would've have been like for Gloria, and what its like for the family now, but I can see this happening. I also have to wonder how sure they are that she didn't. "she didn't use that, we've never even owned that stuff" is much different to "she didn't use that, she's not like that".
This is exactly what I thought. Maybe she hid the fact she tried it because she was embarrassed. From the family’s perspective, I understand why they deny it and blame the hospital. Saying someone used “oven cleaner” to try and help themselves sounds ridiculous and the way she died was surrounded in such bizarre circumstances that it’s hard to believe mistakes weren’t made. They were angry, and grieving, and needed someone or something to blame and refused to blame Gloria. In the end it was a tragic and freakish set of one in a million circumstances. I truly believe it was no one’s fault and that it was all just a freak accident.

28:14 A lot of people also don’t remember that you can make mustard gasses at home with cleaning supplies and not know it until it’s too late. She may not have known either and heard random advice for an at home remedy.
Small correction, the recipe I know you're thinking of produces chloramine gas, not mustard gas. Common misconception. Not nearly as horrific, but still extremely hazardous.

At first you think "this is ridiculous, that old lady is just money hungry", but if you look into it, the truth is that she was right to sue, McDonalds used to serve their coffee A LOT hotter than normal coffee, which meant if you got burnt, it would be incredibly serious burns, not the kind you get from coffee you make at home!

I've heard this story before and thought it was interesting but strange, but hearing it now with my dad dying of cancer and only having a few months left it really hits me hard. There's a desperation that hits people when theyre confronted with the fact that there's nothing more to be done, my family has had years to deal with it but it's still the hardest thing I've ever had to think about, I can't imagine what it must be like to one day suddenly be told that you're dying and it's too late and there's nothing you can do. I can see her trying a last ditch effort to treat herself, when all the doctors refuse or are unable to help you you really have no other option but to try alternative treatments whether you really believe them or not.
I agree. I think that it's insensitive to say she was stupid to take something unproven when most people will try anything to cure their cancer. This was in the 1980's, too. Cervical cancer was much less understood then. I think it's fair to assume that we'd all be throwing hail marys.
Plus, it's not like Gloria knew anyone else would be harmed. As far as she knew the worse that would happen is she would die... Which was going to happen anyway. Why wouldn't you try?

On top of that many people used it as muscle pain treatment too (Wendi particularly talking about gym people using the same type of oven cleaner stuff she used)
So you'd think if all these doctors on tv are telling you dsmo might help cancer, AND all these healthy gym bros were using it after a particularly rough workout and were totally healthy, it doesn't sound as bad of a idea (especially if maybe one of those gym people were a friend she possibly trusted suggested it to her and vouched for it as a good treatment)

It is that same desperation that can also make people forget empathy.
I'm sure the blame came from the people that were around her that day, and they surely grew bitter because, remember, some people had permanent damage in their organs and while in not Gloria's fault at all that this happened, its way easier for embittered people to forget that and blame her. I just hope that this video gains more traction- because before this video, I remember there was one myth-buster video that solely blamed the hospital and did agree that it was simply mass hysteria.
It’s no wonder she was in so much pain, late stage cancer pain can’t be controlled with codeine. It’s an old, very mild narcotic that was outmoded for severe pain even in the 90s.
Gloria was really the victim of bad luck, even when she was trying to get help, the help ends up killing her, multiple others, and hurting more. And none of it was her fault directly, just a series of dominoes that caused such a tragedy. That's terrible and terrifying...

Ive heard of this channel before but only recently came across any Wendigoon videos. I like that he manages to explain all the facts and theories of a case while still maintaining compassion for all the people involved. This was a dying mom that for one reason or another wasn’t undergoing chemo, it makes sense that she’d seek out some alternative solution to at least keep her going longer so she could keep on taking care of her family & try to live a decent life. I’m glad that Wendigoon avoids making fun of her while still making it known that there were people being so disrespectful

This whole situation kind of sounds like the plot to a B-movie body horror flick. Such a scary situation, for someone to basically become a nerve agent and releasing toxic gas everywhere.
It inspired a story in the "Memories" set called "Stink Bomb" with a scientist who has a cold tries some experimental medication and then falls asleep, only to wake up later to find everyone in his lab dead and us later finding that the medicine reacted to the shot in his body and now he's letting out a highly toxic gas that even Hazmat suits can't contain along with throwing off the trajectory of missiles and such aimed at him while he tries to go to a lab the military ask him to go to and, of course, try to see what they can learn and how to use it.
My mother was a nurse there . And we lived a few blocks away . The story is 100 percent true.. she didn't go to the hardware store for cancer treatment. She was going to Mexico to get cancer treatments and who knows what they put in her body. That is what the family is failing to tell people that is where the DMSO came from
Seconding that this is also likely and is still very common. The amount of friends/family I have who go to Mexico for cheaper medicine, surgery, other treatments is pretty high. It becomes a dangerous gamble when you start to seek out treatment for more dire conditions.
My friend who is trans went to Mexico to get testosterone to take. He wasn’t taking testosterone, he was taking steroids the whole time.

This is a very good point and one I saw often working in a retail pharmacy. Even in the states, a lot of my Brazilian patients (there's a pretty substantial Brazilian population in my area) went to Brazilian doctors who would prescribe medications that were common treatment options for their conditions back in Brazil, but weren't common in the states. I saw this a lot during the pandemic (not ivermectin lol)

agree, other videos I saw on the topic had little to no respect for her. I feel so bad for her cause my grandpa was in a similar position but less dire. He is a diabetic and due to this, his toes were having trouble getting oxygenated killing the toes and damaging the feet. He had two options from doctors, amputate the foot or amputate the toes and deal with everything else. I will never understand why anyone can't understand that type of desperation in someone especially one who lived nearly his whole life as the one others depend on and for being fit and always out going.
This is the first video I’ve seen from your channel, and based your thorough take on her case in addition to the comments, I’m definitely going to check out more. Your final thoughts remind me a lot of my dad who passed away from thyroid cancer. He battled it for a long time, so perhaps the level of desperation that Gloria experienced wasn’t present, but as other commenters stated, were we in her situation, we might have slathered him in oven cleaner, too. The thing with family accounts that's always hard for me is, as much as I want to listen to them, families oftentimes want to protect the memory of their loved ones and are quick to shoot down anything that they feel 'tarnishes' their memory.
In this case, I think it's very likely Gloria didn't even tell them she was using anything. Perhaps worried they'd judge her, or not wanting to get their hopes up about something she knew was uncertain. Or they did know, but there's comfort it being able to assign blame, and if she did use DMSO- then it's an unfortunate series of events that no one could've anticipated.
Makes me think of all the times someone's family will be on the news calling them "such a nice boy who would never hurt anybody" and it turns out this "nice boy" has a rap sheet as long as they are tall.
@williamjenkins4913 there's a lot of cases where someone very clearly died due to drug use or alcohol, but the family refused to accept it because their loved one "never would've done that" or the many instances of someone committing suicide, but the family refusing to accept it.
It's always horrifically sad, because it's such a human thing to want to see only the best of those you love. At the same time, though, i do think accepting the truth is honoring them in its own way.

I've always heard the more supernatural, spooky version of the story and how it was made to be so mysterious like there was no possible cause. I'm glad to finally hear a logical explanation for it, and in a way that's very respectful.

I think I heard the version where her name isn't even mentioned and the story goes that she just walked in, died, and was never identified. And she wasn't just covered with lotion, she was yellow, as in her skin was unnaturally bright yellow. And the medical staff was fainting and puking all around her just from the smell of garlic, and the blood was clumping and coagulating in the syringe. Like, all the details are there, just exaggerated to an absurd degree, but most importantly, completely dehumanising her. I think that version was leaning heavily towards the devil possession angle. Basically all it's missing is literal fire and brimstone.
It's pretty crazy how easy it is to make a nerve agent gas like that! Someone could easily replicate it out of the body if all of these parameters are possible inside of someone!
It's kind of scary that that chemical hasn't been blacklisted and stopped being sold!
As someone who is studying toxicology (not a chemist) now, I’d be curious to see if there was a way to take a bunch of the oven cleaner and run electricity through it and see if it produces the DMSO4.
I'm happy you had that bit at the end about how Gloria Ramirez was an actual person. I've always felt, just like you said, people keep on forgetting that this was a human with an actual life, a family-a woman with people who loved her. What happened to her was tragic, and if this theory is correct, it's really nothing but a series of unfortunate events that went on to trigger each other.
I remember learning that statistically even women doctors and detectives have a history of downplaying the testimony of women patients/interviewees

Dad was a Veterinarian back in the day. He used to use DMSO for sore muscles. When I was 14 years old I injured my back. So, Mom decided that it would be a good idea to put some DMSO on it. Well, she somehow managed to get ahold of the bottle that hadn't been diluted. Needless to say, the skin on my back turned to deep blisters until it fell off. Burning didn't stop until four days later. It was pretty much a nightmare.

@@rmx4087 Well, it's labeled as a topical analgesic, ready to use (not a concentrate), and didn't bother her own hands when she dispensed it.
Most people ignore the label advice to try a tiny spot first and watch for reactions, that's present on many products such as hair dye. Some people have a strong allergic reaction to DMSO.
It could have been the "strong allergic reaction" that happens in some people.
i think it makes sense that no one in her family knew she used dmso for her cancer. alternative medicine users are sometimes very shy about telling people in their lives that they use it because they're afraid of judgement. imagine you tell your family you use dmso for your cancer, they'll probably just tell you you're an idiot, go see a doctor. this makes so much sense and i don't think there are any loose ends at all

@@williamjenkins4913 people usually believe the first theory that sounds plausible to them, she died in the most weird circumstances possible and the investigation ended in them calling it "mass hysteria", so for the months/years it took for people to find out it was DMSO, the family was already convinced this was a coverup + the fact that this just can't be recreated in a lab due to many human rights issues
The reason why people might call you foolish or just plain dumb for using “alternative medicine” is that at best it does nothing and the placebo effect kicks in. At worst it makes whatever ails you worse because some weirdo from Arizona told you rubbing a crystal on your skin rash would make it clear right up and now the rash has spread.
It’s a valid reason not to mention your doing something potentially dangerous when you don’t fully understand just what your doing.

I had always prescribed to the mass hysteria theory, but this accidentally made toxic chemical theory really wraps the strange bits all together. I appreciate your note about how Gloria was a mother and a loved family member. I feel like her case is often gawked at like some wild science fiction story when she was a real human who passed away.

@@madeliner1682 no I'm not discounting that she was sick, however correlation does not equal causation. Just because the one nurse had a medical episode doesn't mean it was actually caused by Gloria. A lot of "paranormal" or off occurrences can usually be explained by separate normal occurrences happening and people conflating causation and correlation.
