  • 1970 Chevy Chevelle SS396 drag racing 1971 Dodge Charger R/T
First car is a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Super Sport. The other a 1971 Dodge Charger RT. The Chevelle has a L34 “396” V8 but was actually 402ci by 1970 (error in the video). The Charger R/T has a 440 Magnum V8. The 1970 Chevy Chevelle 396 was rated 350 horsepower and the Charger RT Magnum 440 was rated 370 horsepower. The 1970 Chevelle Super Sport features a 4-speed manual transmission while the Dodge Charger has a TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic. Rear gearing in the Chevelle is 3.31, and 3.55 in the Charger R/T. The 1971 Charger R/T was heavy weighing-in at 4212 pounds, including the driver. The Super Sport Chevelle is also rather heavy at 3938 pounds. There were 51,455 total L34 Chevelle SS396 produced in 1970. Total Chargers produced in 1971 was 82,114 with total number of R/Ts being controversial: likely around 2659 - 3118. The 1971 Charger 440 was tested by Car and Driver in March 1971 with results showing a 0-60 of 6.5 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 14.8 seconds @ 95.7 mph. There is no original L34 SS396 Chevelle testing available for the 1970 year.

The Charger definitely a scale tipping heavyweight! 1971 was really the last real performance year , in the musclecar era..with a few exceptions. The 72 Charger was still hot at 350 gross hp and so were the 73s and 74s. The 72 Charger 440 was rated at 350 gross and the 73 and 74s were 275 net and 375 torque. My 74 Charger Rallye 440 with a recurved distributor and rejetted carb pulling 3.55 gears through the torqueflite and a super tune ran 15.00 at 92 mph. My mph was close to this chargers 92.63 which meant we were running similar power. This charger seems really poorly setup to run that et unless he had traction problems.

@@LITTLE1994 It all depends on what you call performance. In the early 70's everybody sold performance cars. In 1975 catalytics were made mandatory and performance fell off the cliff. My friends 75 Corvette 350 put out 165 hp. A 78 King Cobra Mustang 2 with a 302 put out 139 hp. These cars were running 1/4 miles equivalent to school buses and farm trucks. In 1982 Ford came out with the GT and 176 hp which at least was a dim light at the end of the tunnel and things slowly got better but it was a long time before anyone was running even 15s. As well, the sheer number of varieties performance cars was never like 1970. Thats why 1970 was the high water mark.

What's your point? You are all over the map talking about this engine and that car etc. We are discussing these cars in this race! The 71 440 had a factory 10 to 1 CR and this car has a 9.7 to 1. Its running a 3.55 gear. The rules allow you 1.5 above factory CR. Chargers have never been known to be bullets in the 1/4 mile because they are heavy and also heavy in the front end which makes it poor for weight transfer. Also with the tire rules, a stump puller ass end results in a lot of tire spin. So going berserk with the gear ratios is not a great idea. The Chevelle has the 4 speed which gives it the extra legs through the traps. This Charger is lethargic no doubt about it. My 74 Charger rally with the 440 and torqueflite and 3.55s ran a best of 15 flat. So setup is really important. Some of these cars have incredible balancing and blueprinting done so their performance is far better than stock.

The factory 71 440 engine had a cr of 10 to 1. This particular car the youtuber says is 9.7 to 1. Why I don't know unless they are trying to run it on premium unleaded fuel on the street. Most of these cars bump their cr by 1.5 as allowed by the rules and run racing gas which gives them a considerable boost in power. In 1973 the 440 engine was detuned. My 74 had 8.5 cr, 275 net hp and 375 torque but with a recurved distributor and rejetted carb and a big etc, ran a 15 flat at 92 mph. So this 71 is running slow at 14.79 at 92.63. We are running close to the same trap speeds so my 74 is putting out similar power to this 71. If you are running 70 mph in first gear, you are either running a ridiculously high first gear or you are going to grenade the engine.

It blows my mind that ANYONE could EVER love the look of those 1971-up Chargers and Roadrunner/GTX's. They are WITHOUT A DOUBT some of the UGLIEST vehicles ever made. Just straight-up TRASH. Whoever designed them should've been shot on the spot when he took that design to the bosses at Chrysler. For anyone who is unfamiliar with them...just go look at pictures of the 1970 Charger and 1970 Roadrunner/GTX and then compare those cars to pictures of the 1971 Charger and 1971 Charger/GTX. The 1970 models of BOTH (or I guess all three technically) cars are some of the best-looking muscle cars ever made. The 1970 Roadrunner/GTX is a particular favorite of mine, and I actually prefer the 1970 Charger over the 1969 model (although not the 1968).
The 1971 models...JUST ONE YEAR LATER...are some of the UGLIEST, most HIDEOUS pieces of sh!t ever made by ANY car manufacturer. Not only were they horrifically ugly, but they were fat, heavy, slow pieces of sh!t as well. I will never be able to get over the fact that the bosses at Chrysler saw the new design for 1971 and gave them the green light. I just have a hard time believing that there weren't AT LEAST 10 people along the way who looked at the concept drawings and/or prototypes and said "these turds are some of the ugliest vehicles I've ever seen in my life and if we go from the 1970 models to these things, we are going to tarnish the Charger and Roadrunner/GTX names forever". But I guess nobody ever did because they made these abominations. It hurts my eyes to see one of those hideous things next to that stunning 1970 Chevelle SS...I feel like I should be holding up a crucifix and throwing Holy Water at it. Or perhaps just lighting them all on fire would solve the problem.
