    Boy, reading the comments, I don't know if I should be honored or offended,lol.
    The Camaro is 100% stock with the exception of the PYPES mandrel bent X pipe dual exhaust.
    I've been through the carb, the distributor, curve kit, shift kit in the trans, played with tire pressure, made sure it gets full throttle when peddle is to the floor.
    Car has 55,000 original miles and is fresh out of over 20years of storage.
    It has bad valve seals, and at least one bad cam lobe, probably more judging by the knocking and cam bounce when cold.
    It a low option car, and track scales said 3675lbs on race day.
    YES, IT IS STOCK, but, YES, IT IS ALSO WELL TUNED!!!!!!!!!!

      I had a '79, and it would surprise the hell out of you. It wasn't a Z - it ł was the black/red rally sport. 350 4bbl..two wheel peel. My best quarter mile speed was a blistering 15.3. lol. But she would melt the tires.

      I own a z28 that I purchased new. 4speed with stock 3.73 gears. It was modified with a true dual system exhaust. It runs good, but this car has to have some major mods to run this good.

    • @rorilovita8150
      @rorilovita8150 Před 4 lety +1

      @Domino when I bought the car, I removed the converter, then drove it to a local muffler shop. They installed a dual system with 2 turbo mufflers. It is not an H-pipe setup. Since this car has been highway driven and stored every winter, with only 76,000 miles, the same pipes and mufflers are still on the car in great shape. I could feel the difference in acceleration, but since it was never a drag car I can't tell you the trap speed times. The lack of the weight of an air conditioner and other options, along with the stock 3.73 gears gives it a feel of power.

      Not really. I owned a '79 Camaro very similar to this car. The funny thing about the emissions era is found in how ONLY the engine was hobbled by the rules. The motor's complete lack of compression and flat as Montana cam profile was enough to just kill performance but after the engine things still look pretty good. You got a close ratio 4 speed and 3:73 gears. To get this high 14 sec quarter mile all you really have to do is remove the CAT in the exhaust. I'm betting in this "pure stock" race the owner has holllowed out the converter, assuming rules don't allow him to just remove it.

    • @bw3506
      @bw3506 Před 4 lety +2

      @@Dogboy1960 The narrator stated in the Camaro description that the stock exhaust was removed and duals installed. My comment was based from my personal experiences between small block Chevy and big block Mopars doesn't fair well for the 350s Even the 69 Corvette 4 speed I had. Some vehicles stock some not. I'm no expert and didn't compare my or my friends vehicles at the track or scientifically but we made regular trips to Mexico if you get my drift. I think in these stock races some people spend more time getting to the edge of the rules than others do. Plus some just plain drive better as well. Did you ever do any racing with your 79 and did you leave it stock?

    • @Dogboy1960
      @Dogboy1960 Před 4 lety +6

      @@bw3506 Yes. The '79 was a 4 speed car. Stock with no changes beyond that "test" pipe in place of where the Cat was resulted in a 15.1 1/4 mile time. Next up was a set of headers 2.5" exhaust. A 14.9 was my first step under the 15 sec range. Unfortunately the next step was big one so I can't say what contributed most to the time. A set of aluminum RHS heads, a cam swap and then the very easy Aluminum intake and a 750 Holley 4150 completely transformened the car from emissions hobbled to old school 1960s era tech. Still though, it's worth pointing to the idea that compression with the stock dish pistons was no higher than a mere 9:1. The car ran 14.0 consistently. I did hit a 13.87 best and a couple of 13.9s along the way but in truth this was 14.0 car. That was 35 plus years ago and the car is LONG GONE sold it in the middle of the 1980s. As Irony would have it though today I own a '79 Corvette done correctly and without the budget limitations a 20-25 year old had to live with back in the day. A 383 crate engine makes just about 475HP and it's power is routed through a TCI Automatic with a 2500 stall converter. This emissions Era "push over" easily runs right along side my 2018 6 speed 392 Dodge Challenger to a mid to high 12 second quarter mile. I guess my point is this, "Never assume that just because a car was built in this late 70s era it's gonna be slow" Let's face it the late 1970s was more than 40 years ago and not many of those wheezy engines are still alive today......most are long gone and have been replaced with something better. Yet foolishly there are still a lot of guys who honestly believe these cars are somehow incapable of speed. Nothing could be more INCORRECT.

      @@peteloomis8456 considering I've built more cars than you've probably ever seen, been on An IMSA prototype team, been on a funny car team I know what you could get for a power plant in a 78 Camaro and at no point did I suggest that they put big blocks in them - - I have but the factory didn't. They did put big blocks in Camaro first gens and nobody was talking about trucks anywhere in this and when the original big blocks came out there were no emissions laws or even talk about emissions. I built 302s before Chevrolet put them in the Z28s in "67 by putting a 283 crank in a 327 block ( which if you want to get technical comes out to 301. something). Our team from a small town in northern Arizona won the AHRA Winter Nationals in B Street Hot Rod in 1970 at Beeline. I didn't read about this in some magazine I built and drove the rods back then. Try learning to read before you start imparting your great knowledge to the world when I said apples to apples I meant just that - - the GTX was a pre-emissions big block whereas the the 78 Z was a pig pump emissions SBC ( read Tom Miller's comments below about the 78 ). Then there is the technology gap of 10 years between a 67 GTX and a 78 Camaro. To be clear and so you know in a few days I'll be 71 I didn't read it I lived it and I still have a 78 C3 Vette a blown 355 SBC with Hooker Super Comp Outsiders with a 4 speed that runs 10s, a 1937 Buick highly customized coupe with an SBC, and an 85 Z 28 - - even my boat and Class A RV have 454s in them. I've been racing Chevies probably longer than you've been on the planet but thanks for all your knowledge. Speaking of truck engines I did have a 63 Impala SS 409 once - - I say that because the truck we used as a hauler had a 409 in it from the factory just like the SS did

    For those questioning how a 16 second Camaro ran 14's, here are my two cents. 1978 was near the pinnacle of smog restriction. Manufacturers relied on single exhaust blowing through the most restrictive, pellet-style cats, retarded ignition timing to limit HC, and lean carb settings to reduce CO. I am not surprised that a true 2.5" free-flowing dual exhaust system, optimized ignition timing and more favorable carb jetting dropped ET more than a second.

    My first new car was a 1978 Z-28, Carmine (burgandy) metallic with gold striping, and a tan cloth interior from the type LT Camaro. I ordered it from the factory in November of 1977, and took delivery in March of 1978. It was the only '78 Z I've ever seen with a cloth interior. I passed on the dealer-installed T-Tops. I ordered the gold turbine wheels, but by February I discovered they were on back order with no known delivery date, so I got the color-matched stock wheels instead. I had already waited long enough! It came stock with the dreaded and deadly Firestone 500 radials. I installed an aftermarket sound system, Western Superlite wheels (whch I painted to match the gold striping), and 60 series Goodyear tires. A couple years later, I installed a Fairbanks 3K stall converter, added extra clutch packs to first and second gear, a full shift kit, and true dual exhaust. I could take 455 Trans Ams between stoplights after that, even with a paltry 185HP. It was nowhere near as fast as the '69 Z-28 I drove after college, but it rode smooth, and handled like a go-cart. I sold it in 1983 when my wife and I had our first kid. Couldn't get a baby seat in the back of that Camaro, or I might still have it.

      I have a 79 10th Anniversary TA that I bought in 1987, it was the 403 auto with 2.73 gears, and it weighs nearly 4000lbs. Used to race all the Camaros and Corvettes of the same vintage in my area. Unless the Camaro had a bunch of parts thrown at it, like headers, cam, intake, gears, stall etc. that heavy ass TA would stomp them in the 1/4 and walk away from them on the top end. 145mph was a 4500rpm cruise speed, and the faster it went the more stable it was. The camaros all started getting light in the front and sketchy as hell after 100mph. With the WS6 suspension and 4 wheel disc the TA would go around corners too, despite the 70 series rubber that wallows compared to modern 20 to 45 aspect ratio tires.
      It had a broken plug wire that caused a random misfire (things you do when you're 18 and mostly clueless) when I took it to the track, where it ran 14.7s rather consistently. The slowest run was a 15.0. So its not as fast as my GTOs (12s to 11s for daily drivers) and not as fast as my 79 Formula (mid nines on pump gas) it was certainly faster than the post 71 Camaros and Corvettes. The 403 is an ok engine, they get decent mileage and have ok power, especially if you put headers and an intake on them. Ran one in my 72 GTO for a while when it was my family car, got it out of a 79 SE TA. My 10th has been sitting since 1988 when I enlisted, really need to get it out of storage and rebuild it.
      So yeah, dude has done a lot to it to get it into the 14s.

I liked the car and it made all the right music but it was absolutely out of beans by 4500 rpm...very anemic. Headers and true duals would have been the cure. I can still smell the sulfur of that catalytic converter.

    This is one of those races. The kind that clears up some misconceptions about the past while still revealing the difference between the "smog" motor era and the Muscle car era. Yes, the older cars had more power and the late 70s cars had been seriously de-tuned with low compression and cam profiles designed with what comes out of a tail pipe in mind rather than power as first priority. Yet, what you see here is a pretty good view of how the TYPICAL Muscle car wasn't as fast as most who spin the tales and stories want you to believe and the smog era cars, while obviously weaker, they weren't as slow as the prevailing opinion suggests either. When-ever any of us go to the Drag Strip the car we see running today and/or the cars I saw run back in the day.......rare is the example that is actually show-room stock. Virtually every car at the strip has been at least tweaked and often changed more seriously than that. No out comes are a sure thing.
