  • More load testing and first Rock chucks.
My latest community poll asked: Is Top speed, precision, accuracy or Confidence in making the shot more important. Pleased to see that most placed an emphasis an "confidence". Testing 95-100 grain bullets with RL-16, RL-23 and RL- 22 to achieve 3,000+ FPS.

    Great video Dave.👍
The 243 gets overlooked way too often as a good, all around cartridge. 👍👍
I am glad i waited to the end to comment, as I was hoping to see some rockchuck dusting.

Don’t overthink perfection, Strohmeyer! 6mm Rocks! And that setup is darn close with .157 results! Next!

I've always enjoyed using the Reloder series of powders from Alliant. As of late, I'm getting excellent results in 7-08 with RL 17 and Hornady 154gr SST. So far the world is short one coyote with said combo! Haha
    Thanks Dave!

I was looking at the ballistics tables for my preferred load using a 100g Hornady in .243 Win.
About 2900 fps is all I need for expansion in the lungs of a deer to about 250 yds. The bullet will be traveling about 2350 fps or so at 250 yds.
Back in the 80's I called Sierra, reloaders help phone line. I asked the tech. what was the lowest velocity needed for expansion in a deer's lung area.
He answered quickly and with confidence telling me I needed at least 2350 fps for reliable expansion in a deers lungs. Then he went on to explain that this was if no ribs were hit.
So therefore most of the time I load about 2900 to 2950 fps/w the 100 grain bullet.
I don't think I've gone up in velocoty much past 3000 fps with the Speer 105g spire point bullet/IMR 4350. This load was described in Speer's №. 11 reloading manual. I shot very few of those loads since they were probably hotter than a blowtorch in the .243's barrel. I use about 2875 to 2925-50 with the Speer 105g load. Accuracy is lacking a little though with this bullet.
A word of caution to other loaders reading this comment and load reference. The copyright on the Speer reloading manual is 1987. Things have changed, since then and maybe drastically with powder, primers, bullets, cases, and rifles. Canister powders are supposed to stay the same. But I don't think this has happened because most all powder manufacturers have changed ownership since then. Its a ducky that they don't make powders exactly the way the past owners did. So be careful using older powders and new data, or new powder with older data. In 30 some odd years, in my opinion, canister powder has not remained unchanged. Same goes for pistol powder.

Great video, the two smallest groups are fantastic. Wouldn’t break my head to get another 100 feet per second, at 2840 it’s flat shooting enough 👍

Hi Dave, I enjoy your video's, excellent groups. I have had good luck with IMR 7828 and the Speer 100 gr BTSP using the Nosler data. Velocity around 2950 and nice groups. Keep up the good work!

I would take super accuracy, over velocity anyday. Just have to write the ballistics on a dope card, And follow them. Our goal is always to put a ninety five grain Bullet from a. six millimeter in a groundhogs eye. App three hundredYards.😊😊😊

For small calibers "Speed is always your friend" I just need to figure out why this new rifle/ammo combos aren't meeting published speeds and why there is such a disparity of charge weights between manuals.

  • @mikecollins8241
    @mikecollins8241 Před rokem +1

I've been reloading for 20+ years and have seen the same differences in Max loads in different manuals.. an I don't always find a load for the specific bullet I am using (but same weight).. So, I do what you did, and work my way up, looking for the sweet spot...
I wouldn't worry about 1-200 fps, if the accuracy is there, for (big game) hunting distances it won't matter, and for varmints, well... misses happen, it's just another excuse :)

I know Honady load data max charge is not always max pressure, but best precision or maybe I should say max speed before groups fall apart in their testing.

There is a point of impact shift. But no change in group size, if I do my part consistently from string to string.

Just my opinions::::Invest in a better rest and bench, buy some wind flags and learn to use them, and get a stand alone crono and take that weight off the barrel

All of your points are valid for "Bench rest or match precision shooting disciplines... But shooting at multiple non shooting range locations and preparing for hunting possible situations as is shown at the end of this video, my portable system works well enough.
