Strange, I’m the opposite. When it came out I loved it and bumped it heavy, but haven’t listened in a while and on this relisten it doesn’t feel as good as I remember

1985 is a masterclass example of someone being like “I am not even going to dignify what you are saying with a response” while simultaneously letting them know you could end their career with ONE interview. He literally told Pump “ruining you is not worth my time” 😂

Most underrated cole album imo...will take this over The Off Season all day
i love cole but this is insane.
the off season isn't as strong as KOD thematically - but the production is absurdly better and the vocals, especially from Morray, Bas and 6lack, are much better than on KOD.
I can do a tracklist comparison: doing it not in order, but by order of best to worst songs from each album. that way there are no david/goliath matchups.

The top 6 are relatively balanced. After that, KOD expriences a sheer drop in quality that The Off Season just . . . doesn't. I find that 9-12 on KOD are just extremely difficult to listen to, epsiecally KOD. The Off Season just feels more complete because you can still listen to the thing without wanting to skip half the songs. Part of the reason KOD is so hated on despite is being a solid album is because it's notably worse than 4YEO, which is probably Cole's best work to dedicated fans.
@@dylanwatt7461 Thanks for the comparison above - but even that is subjective, you have Punchin the clock at 11 when it is my favourite off that project. Appreciate your reasoning though, and yeah 4YEO is my favourite Cole project too. I heavily look for thematicism over most other factors when it comes to musical projects.
For clarity, I would give KOD a strong 8 and TOS a weak 8, they aren't leagues apart so my bad if that's how it came across.

Kill Edward is in reference to Coles' stepfather, I believe. His name was Edward and he had a horrible relationship with him. The Cut Off does reference it subtly, too. But that also why Kill Our Demons is a theme as he needs to grow from it
Edit: Also talks about in Window Pain I believe "all I wanna do is kill the man that made my momma cry"

KOD was the first Cole album I ever listened to and I discovered it right after my pops had passed. It let me feel my feelings and work through losing my dad, and seeing y’all 2 react and discuss this project really connects me back with my dad. Keep doing ya thing❤️

Kill Edward is based off his step father Edward, who was mildly abusive to him, his brother, and mom and then left their mom when he grew up. But this was the only father figure he had growing up, who showed him rap like Tupac and biggie. So he as much as he resents Edward he also thanks him for that. But in therapy, they say to kill your ego or traumatic experience, hence kill Edward, which personifies all his trouble and traumas during his up bringing. I put it together on my own, and then cole confirmed it during an interview
