- Khaldoon Al Mubarak says the progress Phil Foden has made over the past 12 years shows the value of a top-class Academy setup.
In his annual interview with CityTV, our Chairman sat down with Editor-in-Chief Chris Bailey the morning after our defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League final.
And in the final instalment of three, he says Foden’s journey from youngster at Platt Lane to playing in the biggest game in world football sums up the importance of our Academy.
He also discussed the synergy in our approach to men’s and women’s football, the new broadcast deal coming into the women’s game and our success at EDS and U18s level this term.
“Back in 2008, my first visit to the Manchester - my first day, as chairman of this club - I visited Platt Lane,” he said.
“I was taking a tour and I was introduced by the coaches to a young lad, eight or seven years old back then.
“And they told me this boy is a very special boy, you should say hello to him.
“I said, yeah, it'd be a pleasure. So, they brought this boy called Phil and that eight-year-old started in the Champions League final for Manchester City.
“That's the value of a great academy. That's the story of evolution.”

Losing this guy is almost impossible, if you know where he's coming from and his position in the UAE. Mr. Khaldoon Al Mubarak comes from a dynasty of diplomats, that were close to ruling family for several generations now, he was raised and nurtured mainly by his grandfather after his father was assassinated, from young age to work for the government and his nation, used to work in management of national oil and gas company, then in government investment fund operating with hundreds of billions, very close to Abu Dhabi's ruling sheiks, especially crown prince and his brothers- one of whom is HH Sheikh Mansour , owner of Man City. So no wonder a man so brilliant with long term business planning. MCFC capitalisation risen several times since sheikh bought the club. Mr. Khaldoon one of sheikhs closest advisors with numerous successfull projects to his name and high ranking positions. His brother and sister also are high ranking officials. So it's not like he's some western manager working for sheikh on the temporary contract, they tied pretty closely, known each other from young age, it's pretty much like a family.
