    Nick, you getting on the Cross Country train at its starting point in Bournemouth with all the choice of seats is a good idea for a new journey concept - Travel from one city to another, but changing at every station where you can board an originating service. So travelling from Weymouth to London you could change onto starting-point services at Bournemouth, then Southampton Central, Portsmouth Harbour, Horsham, Three Bridges and then East Croydon.
    Every time it’s an originating train where you have (in theory) a favourable choice of seat ;-)

    You stopping in Wareham reminded me that when I was younger we actually used to have 4 trains an hour between Southampton Central & London Waterloo. 1 Southampton- London, 1 Poole to London, 1 Wareham to London and 1 Weymouth to London. Also the small platform in Bournemouth used to be used for the Bournemouth to London Victoria service which now just runs between Southampton and Victoria (when they feel like it 😂.)

    You could have taken a GWR service to Upwey and then an SWR stopper to Wareham or wherever.

    • @KempSimon
      @KempSimon Před 5 měsíci

      I thought that EMU's couldn't work in multiple west of Poole because Network SouthEast electrified the line from there to Weymouth in 1987 on the cheap, and the substations could only handle the current draw from one train in section at any one time!

    • @TrainsOfDorset
      @TrainsOfDorset Před 5 měsíci

      @@KempSimon Although they are able to work in 10 car formations, it is very rare because it draws an incredible amount of power, so therefore it is allowed only in 'exceptional circumstances'. I believe that the lack of power only appears once you get to Wool but is commonly perceived to be Poole because the Poole - Waterloo 10 cars terminate there and can't split at Wareham as that only allows 7 cars.

      I have a few videos of it happening - I was on board one of them when trains were delayed over 90 minutes in July 2022 by signalling problems and points failures around Weymouth. I also saw one in the snow, which came up as 10 cars from Weymouth and reversed at Wareham (back to Weymouth) to clear ice from the 3rd rail which was preventing a train that was stuck at Wareham from drawing power.

  • @warrentimothy2276
    @warrentimothy2276 Před 6 měsíci

    450s rarely go past Poole. The reason is because the electricity supply towards Dorechester limits the train length to a maximum of 5. Obviously, 5 car trains are much longer than 4 (because each coach themselves is longer on a 5 than a 4). Because it's a busy route, SWR try to use the 444s on the route to maximise space for passengers, because the equivalent 8 car 450 formation is forbidden. It is rare, but 450s can go down to Weymouth, but only as a 4 car and that sucks!

    Yeah some other train routes I recommend in the area are: 1. the circular (kind of) from Romsey - Eastleigh - Southampton - Romsey - Salisbury.
    2. The part of train route between Fareham and Eastleigh.
    3. Basingstoke - Reading there are two operators one dose all stop service and one is a first train.
    I live in South east of England southern have quite a few train routes that that you have to be in the correct carriage because the train will be too long to stop at a platform or it will separate and divide.

    one good thing living at the end of the line in Weymouth when you get on at Waterloo you get a good 2 hours sleep. Oddly i always wake up as it goes over the points at Dorchester. as local sadly i knew you were getting off at Wareham. the foot crossing at wareham has barriers and alarms as people have been known to stroll in front of the departing trains. you can also get a bus down to Swanage for the steam railway. Maybe come back in the summer and ride the saturday special to Corfe Castle.

    At one time Connex SouthCentral ran an hourly train service all the way from London Victoria via Havant and Southampton to Bournemouth. If my memory serves me correctly, the eight-carriage EMU split at Barnham with one portion going to Bognor Regis and the other to Bournemouth. Here it recessed in Platform One (whilst the water tanks were replenished by the platform staff) before setting off on its long return journey. When Virgin CrossCountry introduced its "Operation Princess" clockface timetable between Bournemouth and Manchester (in 2003) there were too many trains running between Southampton and Bournemouth so the Connex services were terminated at Southampton, as is the case today. Which is a shame because the elderly Connex 4-VEP EMU's got a real workout after the traction current supply pressure went up from 750 Volts to 850 Volts at St. Denys Junction, hammering their way through the New Forest along Castleman's Corkscrew at anything up to 90mph!

    You could almost have accidentally done Cosham to Bosham as well, there - which the locals pronounce as Buzz'um, but then, older Pompey folks also talk of Cossum! Back in the days of Connex South Central, trains ran between London Vctoria, Southamton and Bournemouth's Platform 1, by the way. I didn't know it existed until then train I was on terminated there, either! Now I have a feeling that Portsmouth to Southampton via Eastleigh is a permitted route too, as there used to be the odd token train routed that way to serve the airport, butI may be wrong. You could have ticked GWR off sooner by catching a Heart of Wessex service from Weymouth to Upwey... might have messed up your schedule though!
