Hi - can you are more than 1 station at a time? Like have 3 different locations on the board? Maybe 1 for Kings cross and 1 for Manchester etc?

Bulwell being my local station I've often thought about doing a video such as this one, but never got around to it. I might just have to give it a go this weekend now as you've just given me the motivation.

I tried doing the journey Nick did on my journey planner app and I ended up with 6 different journeys I could do per day.

The limited service these stations get just shows why the ECML needs to be upgraded to 4-Track between Peterborough & Edinburgh at least.

I feel as though the 170s are due to be refurbished. The 158s, less so but I tend to only see the 158 between Norwich and Liverpool. At least the 158s are kept after EMR withdrew its 153s, 156s, 180s and the Intercity 125s HST.

That’s weird, scotrail does have any 170s in the original maquette.

Last time I was in Shirebrook the station had no platforms, and the signalbox was still open (we were stabling an OTM in the loco shed.

The old station building at Whitwell (my home station) was dismantled and rebuilt brick by brick at the Midland Railway in Butterley.

Re: loud Turbostars. The fans get blocked up easily due to collected detritus being collected and the depot not cleaning the radiator fins. The engine cannot cool hence loud fan noises to try and keep the engines cool.

EMR don't referb they're trains the 170s they have were never they're own either from Greater anglia or west Midlands or as you pointed out scotrail.

Nick, re your comment at 8:48, this section of line is on the original Midland Railway formation (as is the whole line from Nottingham). However, north of the tunnel is where things get interesting. Originally three railway companies competed for colliery traffic along the leen valley from the pits at Hucknall (Nos. 1&2), Linby, Newstead, and Annesley. Consequently there were originally three parallel lines at Newstead, two tunnels through the Robin Hood Hills (the Great Central and the Great Northern shared a tunnel) and again the three companies had lines north of the tunnel through Kirkby. BR closed the MR line through Kirkby due to the number of level crossings and used the GNR formation, plus a short link line to take traffic back onto the MR towards Mansfield. Consequently RHL trains heading north out of the tunnel run on the old MR, then on a short stretch of the GCR, then the GNR and their station at Kirkby, then the short stretch that BR built, just past Kirkby Summit signal box, and then back onto the original MR formation. The trains run at a much higher level than the original formation for the GCR stretch and the initial stretch of the GNR and hence the quite steep descent to the junction at Kirkby.

Nice vlog Nick. I finished doing the Marston Vale Line just under 2 weeks ago and I did do walks between some of the stations to save time but I chose ones specifically with public footpaths and not main roads. Ridgmont is definitely my favourite station on the line!

Just thinking about this; I’m assuming you won’t remember a time when this was a freight only line. I do; and I did it, some of it, on a railtour in Jun/1992. There used to be a line from Creswell over to Chesterfield via Clowne. It’s now a cycle track. Did you tick off Shirebrook? Did you know there’s a huge Sports Direct store there? 😜

Nice Idea. but I don't see the sense of the video if you don't show anything from the places you visit. All I see is your face over and over and doesn't really make a difference for me as a viewer if I see it when you sitting on the same place for an hour or if you jump in and out of trains. The idea has far more potential.

Two things you didn't mention, Mansfield Woodhouse , those trains which terminate use the converted goods shed. You did stand in front of it. Good reuse of an old building. Also kept the passenger trains out the way of the freight, when passenger trains finished here. Also at Shirebrook the old freight loco shed SB is or was at the south end of the station, you are way too young to possibly know that. Glad you do what I do and call it Mansfield Town rather than plain Mansfield, I wish EMR would reinstate the Town bit. Great videos. Keep it up.
