Shanghai is one of the cities where you can live there for half your life and still find yourself a tourist during the weekends. Seriously, there is always some part of the city that changes every weekend.
Been to Shanghai some five or six times started from first visit in 1987 and the last being twelve years ago. It has changed a lot over time.Thank you!

There are too many Shanghai videos on the YT platform. There are many rural areas in China that are good candidates for interviews. You can get an electric car and go to the countryside to play. The air is good, the scenery is good, and there are few people.
I haven't been back since 2017. Can't wait to see what surprises me next I'm back in Shanghai.
On yuyuan road, there is a large neighborhood built in the 1910s. They are still there, I grew up there. The city doesn't have any plans to demolish that area at all.
The neighborhood is kept like a cultural heritage site.
Yes strongly agree they should keep and protect the old historical structures intact for the future generation. Havent been to Shanghai since my last visit in 2011

Of course, Shanghai is the first choice for foreigners. The environment here is open and friendly. It is a city where China and the West meet. Although there are many foreigners in other Chinese cities with good infrastructure, they are basically localized.

There used to be a place on the south side of the river where I go and drink beer by myself and watch all the boats, I was gone for 3 years and now the stupid pathway has extended over that place and it's no longer mine anymore......

I thing not so many problems with old buildings in Shanghai because in several areas old buildings with some interest are well kept and will not be demolished in nearby future... but of course still some old buildings area without any special value will be changed into an area full of tall buildings
Totally agreed with you about not getting that excitement after visiting back to a city where we stayed for some time.
Same thing happened with me when I visited HK after 6 years.
I found the city (HK), I stayed in for around 2 years back in 2017 (I was 25 then), is quite different, which made me a bit disappointed.
I think, that's because during the period we move forward in our lives with better or worse experiences....

shanghai is too expensive, crazy house prize compared with ordinary citizen income.
not really average income in shanghai is 41,000 usd a year and average rent for a year is 12,000usd a year so its not bad, shanghai wages are higher than all chinese cities other than beijing hongkong and maybe shenzen

sh has never been the best city in the world (from my personal experience as a local)
I feel that whoever left China during Covid can no longer call China home. The ones stayed with China during the lock down can proudly call Chian HOME. Nothing personal, just that you brought up the HOME idea.
I am OK with Lee Berrett left China during Covid because he has cancer. And Laowai the same as ... you know he is old and his wife has a condition. The rest are just vloggers trying to cash on China.
I guess you don’t know that they literally didn’t let us come back… I stayed if Shanghai the fist Covid months and when everything was already going back to normal in China we had to travel for a family member funeral, and while being away less than 1 week, China cancelled all existing residence permits and Shanghai went into lockdown, meaning we couldn’t go back even if we wanted to. For months we tried talking with the embassy, trying to find a flight becsuse all comercial flights got cancelled so the only way to go was getting on a waiting list of a flight what only was sold by official Chinese travel agents, and was mandatory to be from you country of origin to the city you were doing in China directly. And to be on the waiting list you had to present fist your new visa to go, no matter if you had an existing residence permit. In the embassy they told us they had to review all cases individually and only high ranking workers would be given a visa. (So no normal workers or family members). They didn’t let us back home, our home… we had to stay with family members until we accepted we couldn’t go back … we had to keep an agreement with our landlord in shanghai because ewe couldn’t go back an all of our things where there. And even after all of that… including losing our jobs because we couldn’t even be there… we will go back home now that the again find jobs and that all the immigration policies relaxed. We had a friend that was stuck with his daughter in Europe because they didn’t let them go back home, to his Chinese wife. Because family visas where not being issued…

I am from Shanghai, just went back to SH in June and July. Very understand your feeling of Shanghai, disappointing and complicated. I feel the whole system is not friendly to foreigners.
