As a young apprentice seeing videos on the way the whole thing is run helps immensely. So good having some Aussie carpentry content.

only just seeing this vid, i went out on my own in 2019 did work out went back to working for other people still as a subbie but still had a boss in a sense, this year around 4 months ago went back out on my own and started framing again now have 2 boys working and a 3rd coming on in 2 weeks work is flat out none stop work coming in just gotta stick at it and keep going !

I’ve come across your channel and subscribed. I’m finding it very interesting. I’ve got a solid interest in building, but just for my self with a home I’ve been renovating for a few years. I’ve worked on every single inch of the place inside and out including yards front and back. I did a owner builder and built a ensuite addition to our house that came out great…I did over kill it in the frame and roof, but always had no issues with the certifier/inspector along the way. People now stop in the street when I’m mowing my lawns, yes I am a cylinder mowing lawn fanatic too LOL😂 and they compliment the massive change to this place 😊….sorry I waffled on. Getting back to your vid and advice which was good, and glad you mentioned about the paperwork side and the accountant after the fact. I’d strongly advice to get a professional bookkeeper sooner rather than later. I personally know a bookkeeper who is up to date and keeps their client compliance current as the ATO has made various changes that some old school bookkeepers just don’t seem to keep up with. Last thing you want to be doing when you have let things go too far is to look for a bookkeeper to do what they call in their trade “recuse work”…meaning your bookwork is a mess and heaps of work to do to get you compliant. Your accountant will love seeing “clean files” to look at too from a good bookkeeper and best to have an accountant and separate bookkeeper. Some accountants offer the bookkeeper services, but it’s like a builder saying he will also service your car. A good dedicated bookkeeper with be more across your daily business and will work on your business so you don’t have to spend hours working on it and let you work in your business making money. Sorry I went on again, but have valid reasons to stress it. Have cracker day and I’ll continue watching and also tell my nephew which has just started out in the building game as an apprentice to check you out too 👍

Good video! I’m 4th year apprentice wanting to go out on my own when finish start business, already started since end of 2nd year doing side jobs for people working 7 days weeks a lot out of choice to get a good reputation! More guidance videos like this would be sick🤙

Great insights. You really do describe in pragmatic terms the realities of the business and working for yourself. Many of the things you said have been things I've mentally mulled over the last few years and helped me be content working for someone else. There's a lot to working for yourself and it's just not for everyone. Or at least not something to take lightly. Cheers mate.

depends on the area a fair bit mate, if they cant get crews theyll pay more, theres also different rates for stick and pre fab, anywhere from 12-40 on volumes

To be honest....dont do it. Im running one roght now and even with a shitload of work on the amount of paperwork plus waiting for builders to pay invoices while still having to pay workers...tax debt rack up REAL quick even when you try to do the right thing.
