Sometimes this fandom will make me feel like I'm not allowed to like certain games. These mofos will say we're entitled to our opinions but will be SO condescending about it. They'll even blame us for their dislike of the series' current direction and strawman us as mindless consumers who will buy anything Sonic puts out and never criticize anything ever. It's kinda sad since I'm referring mostly to older fans who should have more going in their lives at that age. Especially since they probably haven't liked a Sonic game in 20 years.
True. I can feel that way about the Kingdom Hearts fandom at times as well. I can't help it sometimes, but it's best to just like what you like. As long as you're being respectful about your opinions. It's extremely annoying when people just write certain games off as garbage, mock or call out others for just for liking those games, saying that they're fanboys lacking actual standards, like they have a high horse to sit on, and then turn around and act like the games that THEY like are practically perfect. It's extremely pretentious.

My luke warm takes: Sonic Frontiers was no master piece, but it was pretty damn good. Open world sonic is 100% the way to go, but just not on enclosed islands where traversal stands out (The open world should be in cities, or more traditional styled sonic locations) also the story of frontiers is the best story we’ve gotten since unleashed Sonic Mania should have been 100% original, no returning levels from prior games, just new original made zones Sonic Forces had some good ideas and has a great premise, but with a bad execution in gameplay and story Sonic Origins is good. Theres nothing wrong with it other than the god awful remakes of the sonic 3 proto tracks Sega probably should have gone a more traditional route for 06 and called it Sonic Adventure 3 Sonic fans have to stop demanding impossible things from Sonic Team. All the developers and people who work on the games are human too. Hot Takes: Sonic CD is my favorite sonic game. I have no idea why, but i love it’s whacky premise, soundtrack, atmosphere, and stupid gimmicks. It’s the most sonic thing ever. 3D blast was actually okay (saturn version that is) Sonic Adventure 2 is ludicrously overrated. The game is not bad by any means, but the sonic and shadow levels are the only parts of the game I enjoyed. The story is very good, but a lot of the dialogue choices are atrocious. The soundtrack is goated though Sonic Colors was never REALLY good. It was a good game, but it wasn’t the best boost game ever made. Sonic looks best when he has longer spines, sapphire blue fur, and more lighter skin (in some games he looks like he got done with a spray tan) and backlights on his shoes Frontiers and Unleashed are perfect examples of what a sonic narrative should be
man i agree on all of these like i think update 3 in fronteirs were near perfection of sonic gameplay and i agree on all your takes besides cd i think cd is one of the better games but i think sonic 2 was the best sonic game and i feel that forces is underrated cus it was not really good but with a better story and better gameplay it would be pretty good

He said it's a bad "Sonic" game but a way better game than the majority of the series. He finished off his Sonic retrospective by saying it's a shame so many smart people have deluded themselves into liking this series of games, so you probably shouldn't take his opinion seriously, as he seems bitter at Sonic about something. I also saw some posts on Sonic Retro defending it, but don't ask me to go dig those up.

I mean yeah, Frontiers is trying to be an open wor- I mean uh, open zone game, so automation in that sort of context where you would expect to be able to run around freely is far more egregious than in Forces, where all you really have to do is reach the end of the level.

Well, I think you are right about a few things. I think it's important to have __meaningful__ discussions, and respect each other's opinions. You and I might not see eye to eye (I know, because we've gone back and forth about Unleashed a couple of times), but I can still respect you for your thoughts and agree that a game can have flaws. Ironically, Sonic's community is very hard to change, despite his games flip-flopping between gimmicks, gameplay, story, and quality. And that's a pretty big issue. Unless it's the Sonic modding or fangame community. Those guys are always GOATed.
I LIKE SONIC FORCES. There I said it. I understand all of the problems, but I like it. It’s also the only game that my brother has played, so it’s the only one I can talk to him about. And Frontiers is my favorite game in the series.
I do believe hot takes are definitely a good thing, it’s a way to see others opinions and why they feel that way. We just need to be more open and not hostile about them that’s for sure. Anyway one hot take O have is that Sonic 2 on the Game Gear has to be the worst and most unbearable sonic game I have ever played.
My hot takes (I think): Sonic 2 is my least favorite classic game, the reason is that I don't like the half pipe special stages, and Metropolis zone is annoying (not the stage itself, but the enemies) Forces has a really good ost, even the classic ones, I can see why people hate Green Hill theme, but for me it's so goofy it makes me smile for some reason I don't mind when the game slows me down, but the night stages in Unleashed slow me a little too much
I agree with you on Forces, it's just something I got a little bit of enjoyment out of despite everything but I disagree with you on Frontiers and P-06. Anyways, my hot take is that I don't really like SA2, it was always so insanely hyped up by everyone and everyone always pointed to it when talking about the best Sonic game. Anyways I tried it a couple of years ago and I forced my self to like it until I just couldn't. Sonic's stages were pretty good but I despised everything else in the gameplay (even the chao garden, I never found any fun in it). Eventually I dropped the game when I got a new pc but I decided to get a 100% save file and a few mods so I could enjoy what I enjoyed. Maybe like half a year later I decided to fully beat the game again and I still didn't enjoy it, the story meant more to me on my 2nd playthrough but gameplay always comes first unless a game is purely based around the story (Telltale's games for example).
I like SA2 but people meatride that game hard. I feel that it needs serious adjustments to be a pretty solid game, but as it is it's good but flawed (to me). Tails and eggman need really big adjustments to how their mechs control, shadow needs more stages in the dark route, rouge and knuckles need to have less extremely enclosed levels and need room to fly around (as well as adjustments to the navigation and scoring system, the chao garden needs to be less grindy, and the sound design needs serious readjustment. It's a tall order but these are problems that become extremely obvious when you go for completion in this game.

my hot (?) takes: sonic unleashed and sonic frontiers are PEAK sonic, specially unleashed, i just love everything about this game (yes, even the werehog) i dont like sonic mania, maybe i just dont like classic sonic in general IDK, i much prefer the rush games gens is overrated, maybe i will change my opinion when the shadow part drops, yeah the gameplay is good sure, but the narrative is non existant, it has no original osts and its too short, it just doesnt make me feel anything i love base frontiers final boss, the gameplay has nothing to do with sonic, but i love everything about it

Maloney bears sonic hot takes: sonic 06 isnt and never was a bad game (technically). Dont get me wrong sonic 06 has glitches beyond what i can type but I remember if I was ever bored when I was younger I would boot up my ps3 and load on to sonic 06 and play for hours and laughing everytime I fell through the ground. Sonic forces is a good game for what it was trying to be. Sonic unleashed is the best sonic game in history. Sonic adventure 2 is a great game but over rated. Sonic heroes has the coolest gimmick in a sonic game to date. Sonic fan games are better then 70% of Sega made sonic games
TLDR Classics, Adventure 2 Colors and Generations suck. Leading up to the hype of Sonic Frontiers, I decided that I wanted to start Sonic games from the beginning. Specifically the 3D ones since I didn't have 60+ to burn regularly when I started, not to mention I wasn’t really interested in the Classic style of games (outside Colors DS because nostalgia). So I went Adventure, Adventure 2, Unleashed, Colors, Generations, Forces, Frontiers. Adventure was absolutely fun, really cementing that as the "Adventurer Formula" for me. Unleashed is absolutely amazing. Forces is meh. And Frontiers, although not a masterpiece like everyone said, still kept me getting into it. SA2 left me frustrated and annoyed. Especially since it shifted so far away from SA1. Do I mean style? No. Absolutely not. Just little things that make it feel big. The hardest nostalgia carry if I've ever seen one. I couldn't even finish Colors it was so bad. And trust me, I tried. I really did. But the controls were way too bad for me to keep at it. Generations, although I enjoyed certain aspects, I just can't see it like everyone else. I definitely think the Mods made this so popular because after playing Unleashed, this feels so watered down. Recently, I got Origins. I played up till 2. Wow. Just wow. It was the worst experience. And I listened to everyone. I knew it was a skill issue that I would get over with time. Or so I thought because there was nothing there to make me ever wanna go back. I just can't get into it with unfair hits, deaths and controls. At least I finished Sonic 1. So it wasn't a total Colors experience. I'm really hoping people are right about these being bad ports because I just can't enjoy Colors and Origins. I haven’t even touched Superstars because of them. And it looks so fun! But if it's like the Classic games, I don't think I can handle it.
Im gonna give one of my many hot takes: HD Unleashed is extremely overrated and extremely flawed. Its probably my least favorite 3d sonic game( along with sa2)
My Sonic hot takes consists of Sonic Lost World being one of the most fun 3d Sonic games there is out there, same with Black Knight and Frontiers. Another one has to do regarding the handheld games, I think that Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic Labyrinth which isn’t know by many but are awesome handheld titles.
@@alptugraakan7490 and that's the issue, just because a game has momentum in it doesn't mean it's momentum based. All the games you mentioned to varying degrees has Sonic loosing speed going uphill and gaining speed going downhill. However there's little to no level design that utilises this for skillful play. In unleashed Windmill Isle Act 1 after the first shuttle loop you can cross the gap using pure momentum. That doesn't change the fact that unleashed is a boost game because all the obstacles are built around the boost. In SA1 you can run on walls using momentum, that is the only thing it ever uses momentum for. The rest of the level design heavily relies on the spindash to move through the stage quickly. This is in stark contrast to the 2D momentum based games or the classics where you are expected to use momentum and even using the spin dash wastes time. Everything you can do with the spindash you can do better with raw momentum unlike the adventure games where you NEED the spin dash for nearly all skillful play and you cannot just use your momentum in the same fashion. So my point still stands, just because a game has momentum doesn't mean it is a momentum based game. We only 3D have spindash games and boost games.
Pretty crazy how you think P-06 is not as good as SA2 in wich you are repeatedly waiting to get into a new speed stage cause everything else sucks. And even then SA1 was still better

Heres my hot take: I like adventure 1 more than adventure 2. Not to say that 2 is a bad game, far from it, but I generally enjoyed the stages from 1 a lot more.
Forces has the unfortunate luck of being released after mania. It has flaws, every sonic game does, and sure it feels like they were putting effort elsewhere considering some of leaked details that came out. but when people started saying its next gen levels of broken, thats just pure ridiculous to me lol
I don't even know if these are hit takes or not, but: 1.) I prefer playing Black Knight with the Wiimote and Nunchuck, mostly because it's much more responsive. A regular controller is always recommended for the best experience, but I think it's only servicable. 2.) I think Mania is extremely overrated, it's not bad by any means. It's great, but I find it hard to come back to. And Sonic 3 doesn't have this issue. I go back to 3 and have a much better time and I don't know why. Mainline Classic goes like this for me (haven’t played superstars): 3 2 CD Mania 1 3?.) I think the series music should keep that Electronic, Post-Hardcore range of music, heard in Frontiers, and potentially move onto Nu-Metal Adjacent and Metalcore. Of course, they can and will try more genres, but I need those two. 4?.) I feel that character/team specific spin-offs would be pretty cool. 5.) Bringing back old stages is not too bad. 6.) There's much better platformer franchises than Sonic. Coming from a huge Sonic fan. That's from me for now.
Here's a hot take of mines. I personally don't see the hyped appeal of both Sonic Adventure 1 and 2. Don't get me wrong. The music is FANTASTIC and some certain aspects in the game are fun but not all of them
I think Classic has the best levels in Forces, so I will disagree. Also, in my opinion if you did not 100% it then you did not beat it, as after collecting the Red Star Rings the Moon Medals appear in the levels which disappear after a while and collecting them is where the challenge lies. Getting them on the water slide in Episode Shadow is hellish. Also, the hardest level in the game only unlocks when you collect 100 Red Rings, and most people didn't bother.
Luke warm take? Hot take? Not sure, but either way, here's mine. I personally prefer when Sonic games focus more on gimmicks, set dressings and platforming with only small doses of opportunities to go fast. As much as I love Mania, it can feel a bit...auto-pilot-y at times with you just constantly blazing through certain sections. I go back to Sonic 1 several times because of this. It's not the fastest game in the world, but I'm fine with that seeing as I still find it really enjoyable for everything else it does. And I actually like a lot of the levels in Sonic Superstars. Sure, some of the gimmicks can feel intrusive, but for the most part, I loved exploring those levels with the different characters and emerald powers.
Hot takes I have: Black Knight and Shadow is criminally underrated. Some parts of Shadow were annoying, I know, but it’s pretty good. Black Knight is probably the most hidden gem in the franchise. Mania never stood out to me. It’s very good, but I don’t play it as much as the others. (THIS DOESNT MEAN I THINK ITS BAD I LOVE IT BUT WHAT I SAID IS TRUE TO ME) Sonic Forces is a pretty good game. Episode Shadow, the Avatar stuff, the boost stages, the Super Sonic DLC, amazing. It looked like it could be something great and it was, just not in the way everyone was expecting. Rise of Lyric is only good cause of the art style. That’s it.
@l.poison It's irrational nonsense based on misconceptions. 1: People hate it for the swearing, which is not even a core thing about the game. The original japanese barely has any explicit swearing(Possibly less than other Sonic media) and the implicit stuff like "Ki-sama"(very disrespectful way of saying "You", often likened to a swear) is absolutely often used across the series already. Basically in a shutnell, people do not actually hate Shadow, they just want better localizations and they do not know it yet. 2: They hate it for guns...which existed and were used in prior games. Why should a mobian specifically not be allowed to use them? Especially Shadow, who belongs in the human sphere of actions the most? It's not even based on character or "he would not use them considering what happened to Maria", because people think his 06 campaign is Kino and it has Shadow launch missiles and fire hovercraft-miniguns everywhere. 3: They hate it for the aliens, even tho the alternative backstory-explanation of "Gerald's experiment magically worked when he shifted to a hedgehog form" is dumber, nothing more to say. 4: They hate it for the story being roughly put together. This is the most legit reasoning of this list, but then you really cannot say something SA1 did it right because it has similar issues of stuff just not adding up plotwise. Needing rewrites in a potential remake is basically a Sonic staple, why make a singular game more responsible than others? Now, there are legitimately poor things about the game(Shadow's characterization for instance), I am not going to pretend like it is not very flawed. But how flawed it is was greatly overstated.
My hot takes: Sonic Colors Wii has the most fun iteration of the boost as a mechanic Sonic Unleashed's day stages are very repetitive Classic Sonic's stages in Generations can be more fun then the actual classics Sonic Rush Adventure is the best Rush game Frontiers is on par with Forces for me. Albeit, for different reasons And finally, Sonic Heroes is the game of all time Also, if hot takes ever upset you, remember that they're called hot takes for a reason.
Hot takes themselves are fine enough, but the real problem is how people can react to said hot takes. It all just depends whether or not they agree. One of my hot takes is that the Sonic Boom TV Show tries so hard to be funny, but falls flat hard. It's one of the worst Sonic tv shows in my opinion. Someone could take that as an insult and just flame me for that. If someone gets salty, that's not my problem lol. Great video as usual dude!
The adventures of sonic the hedgehog and underground aren't even that good when you watch them again I especially remember underground ends in cliffhanger and the adventures sonic the hedgehog had horrible finale it felt like those two shows barley had much to do about sonic and had gross out humor I'd rather watch sonic boom then those two shows everything else is above boom
My only hot take, sonic frontiers is a master piece in concept. It shows that Sega and the sonic team is now willing to try and recreate what the adventure series was all about. Innovative design and something new. With a story that flows well, is inclusive of more than just some gags or half-baked jokes, and even draws the player in more with its unique gameplay. Even while the execution has mistakes, the fact of the matter was that it was made for the first time after so many years of the same format. No offense to the formula that even made colors or generations, but the original formula always felt linear and very limited which is normal. My only complaint of the original formula really shined in forces. It makes everything feel smaller than it should be and sometimes ends up making me question if you’re even supposed to really look hard for any kinds of extra content. Even as a small Easter egg. Nonetheless it was fun, when it was done right. Now before anyone starts typing out how 06 did something similar, I don’t see it. Personally I see the attempt of the combat system with the punches and kicks but- I think we know what happened with it. Besides that, 06 is another game that has tried to innovate, new characters, new styles of combat, unique missions, and an inclusive story of the characters. (While..that story has the worst possible plot point according to the sonic community, myself included. *cough* Elise kiss scene.) But despite its bugs it was another one of the attempts Sega made to try and surprise the fan base, but this one was rushed to release as a complete and utter mess (if you know the reason, be happy to tell it. Not all sonic fans know the reason for it from what I understand and just see 06 as a curse of a game.)
Heres my hot take: superstars is better than mania, ost and everything. not that i think mania is bad because if mania didn't have the issues i have with the game, it would be much better than superstars. but superstars beats it because of it being more unique and less derivative then mania, and it reminds me of sonic 1 gameplay wise which is my favorite of the mega drive sonic games alongside CD
My hotakes are: I personally think the adventure games are boring asf and i do not like them at all i played the first one for about 10 minutes got bored and never touched it again. And my other hot take is i don't think frontier's is good again i played the demo they had for it on switch (and before you say anything no the switch version wasn't the reason i didn't like it) but it just again wasn't fun or interesting too me but this is all subjective and just my opinion if you like these games i have nothing against you at all
My hot takes: - The Advance trilogy is peak 2D Sonic. - Sonic Rush is mid. - Shadow the Hedgehog is my favorite Sonic game. - Sonic 4 is overhated. - I had more fun with 4, Forces and Colors: Ultimate than i had with Frontiers. - Jun Senoue actually does great Genesis music (factoring Sonic 4 onwards). - (Excluding Sonic Prime, as i haven't watched that one yet) Sonic Boom is the only truly great Sonic TV show, all the other ones range from mediocre to atrocious. - Chao Garden should not come back, at least not in the way it was implemented in Sonic Adventure. - Meta Era Sonic is goated.
My Hot Takes Take 1: Sonic Adventure 2 and Heroes were subpar sonic games, especially SA2.. I had a hell of a lot more fun with the First Adventure game and funnily enough, Sonic 06, I hated the slippery controls on both games. I also felt like the homing attack in sonic adventure 2 was very inconsistent . At least on the 2 ports of the games I've played (PC and Xbox 360) I can sit down and play sonic adventure at any time and have fun playing it, with no frustrations over the controls, the same can't be said about adventure 2 and heroes. It's probably for the best that SEGA doesn't remaster those games because seeing how bad they botched the Colors remaster, I don't want those games being ruined. Take 2: Sonic Rush Adventure was THE best rush game out of the trilogy (Rush, Rush Adventure, Colors). I liked the adventure aspect of the game, as well as the refined boost and level design. Although I can easily go back and play any of those 3 games, I hate the 2nd half of rush where the level design falls off a cliff (literally). I liked the music better, the actual game story was, at least for sonic standards, fairly solid, and the final boss fight was fun. Unfortunately I think this was the last game where blaze was a complete playable character. (Besides the challenges in Sonic Generations) Such a great game, I wish it would get remastered somehow to a mainline console. Take 3 Rise of Lyric had the potential to be a pretty good game. Nintendo struck a deal with SEGA to ensure 4 Nintendo exclusive sonic games. These games were 2 Olympic games, sonic lost world, and Rise of Lyric. If SEGA had not taken this deal, 1. Sonic Lost World would've been scrapped for a boost game most likely, and 2. Rise of Lyric would've probably ended up as a better game. Allowing the Rise of Lyric team, Big Red Button, to actually be able to release that game on the actual hardware they wanted to. (there's a whole video explaining the hellish development cycle) If the devs would've been able to spend more time developing the game rather than trying to port over an original Xbox One / PS4 title with CryEngine 3 over to the Wii U, a game console absolutely not compatible with that game engine, it would have been a pretty good game. It really sucks seeing mega corporations ruining games with greed.
Forces is technically better than Frontiers as a game. But also, i definitely prefer Forces. At least forces was an actual sonic game most of the time. So, the stuff i actively want to go back to in frontiers is the cyberspace levels and the towers from rhea

The younger kids age 4, 7 in my family hate sonic adventure 2 and like sonic forces because mech levels are way harder then sonic forces. It also has more replayablity and customization which they love. While I prefer sonic adventure 2. So age does matter. And now to them sonic forces will be more nostalgic then sonic adventure 2

I'm not really a sonic fan more so someone who likes platforming games in general so of course i tried out most sonic games as well. My hot takes would be. The classic games aside from 3 aged very very bad, 1 and 2 weren't all that good to begin with. Mania is the best 2d sonic and it isn't even close. The handheld games like rush, colors and even lost world are generally better than the big releases. Generations is the only above average 3d sonic, the rest is at best mid while gen is one of the best platformers ever. Frontiers was a step in the wrong direction and among the worst platformers i ever played,the worst visual direction the series ever saw as well.
The atmosphere and unique stage environments of Forces are better, if Frontiers open zones and cyber space levels were based on the Forces zones it would be fire 🔥
My hot takes is that Lost World (i play the 3ds version) isnt bad, its actually really good. I dont really like the boost games THAT much because it feels more like holding a button with a few jumps, and they always take a 3d boost game and put mroe 2d in it. i also think 06 is the best game in the series
@yyawtwumasimensah197 yeah definitely, 3 different versions of the game and an animated short, with the HD version still being to this day astounding visually with an equally amazing soundtrack and a beautiful narrative, it really seems sonic team was trying to redeem themselves from the 06 fiasco, i hope unleashed gets the sonic x shadow generations treatment so it can finally get justice
My own personal takes on the Sonic franchise in general: Sonic Adventure 2 is extremely overrated. Personally I prefer the first Sonic Adventure over the second. I don't enjoy the mech stages in SA2 and Treasure Hunting is just a boring slog in SA2. Sonic Lost World is an alright game, its not bad like some would make it out to be but it does have some annoying gimmicks that can sour the experience. It just needed more focus on it's major mechanic (Parkour) along with improved physics and controls. Sonic the Hedgehog 1 is better than Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Something about the way levels flow in Sonic 2 just doesn't sit right with me. Sonic 1 feels more like a more well rounded experience to me. Sonic Riders should've been the "style" for Sonic racers. I like what TSR does mechanically with the team based racing idea, but I don't like how it's just "cars/carts" it's just so boring aesthetically to me when Riders felt so uniquely Sonic. Retail Sonic 06 is not an "underrated masterpiece" or any other honorific and no, P-06 does not change my mind, despite me liking P-06. Sonic 06 is a flaming disaster of a game which has haunted the series ever since it launched, does it have concepts that could've been done better? Absolutely. But what it could be/could've been isn't what it actually is.

Personally I don’t think the Japanese version of Sonic X is so much better than the English dub; more accurately, I don’t care enough to want to rewatch Sonic X again. I don’t care if the tone is “improved” or they have like 2 scenes that got censored in English, it’s not like it dramatically changes the show to me. Sonic Frontiers was no master piece, but it was pretty damn good. Open world sonic is 100% the way to go, but just not on enclosed islands where traversal stands out
(The open world should be in cities, or more traditional styled sonic locations) also the story of frontiers is the best story we’ve gotten since unleashed
Sonic Mania should have been 100% original, no returning levels from prior games, just new original made zones
Sonic Forces had some good ideas and has a great premise, but with a bad execution in gameplay and story

Well, I think you are right about a few things. I think it's important to have __meaningful__ discussions, and respect each other's opinions.
You and I might not see eye to eye (I know, because we've gone back and forth about Unleashed a couple of times), but I can still respect you for your thoughts and agree that a game can have flaws.
Ironically, Sonic's community is very hard to change, despite his games flip-flopping between gimmicks, gameplay, story, and quality. And that's a pretty big issue. Unless it's the Sonic modding or fangame community. Those guys are always GOATed.
I LIKE SONIC FORCES. There I said it. I understand all of the problems, but I like it. It’s also the only game that my brother has played, so it’s the only one I can talk to him about. And Frontiers is my favorite game in the series.

I agree with you on Forces, it's just something I got a little bit of enjoyment out of despite everything but I disagree with you on Frontiers and P-06. Anyways, my hot take is that I don't really like SA2, it was always so insanely hyped up by everyone and everyone always pointed to it when talking about the best Sonic game. Anyways I tried it a couple of years ago and I forced my self to like it until I just couldn't. Sonic's stages were pretty good but I despised everything else in the gameplay (even the chao garden, I never found any fun in it). Eventually I dropped the game when I got a new pc but I decided to get a 100% save file and a few mods so I could enjoy what I enjoyed. Maybe like half a year later I decided to fully beat the game again and I still didn't enjoy it, the story meant more to me on my 2nd playthrough but gameplay always comes first unless a game is purely based around the story (Telltale's games for example).
I like SA2 but people meatride that game hard. I feel that it needs serious adjustments to be a pretty solid game, but as it is it's good but flawed (to me). Tails and eggman need really big adjustments to how their mechs control, shadow needs more stages in the dark route, rouge and knuckles need to have less extremely enclosed levels and need room to fly around (as well as adjustments to the navigation and scoring system, the chao garden needs to be less grindy, and the sound design needs serious readjustment. It's a tall order but these are problems that become extremely obvious when you go for completion in this game.

TLDR Classics, Adventure 2 Colors and Generations suck.
Leading up to the hype of Sonic Frontiers, I decided that I wanted to start Sonic games from the beginning. Specifically the 3D ones since I didn't have 60+ to burn regularly when I started, not to mention I wasn’t really interested in the Classic style of games (outside Colors DS because nostalgia). So I went Adventure, Adventure 2, Unleashed, Colors, Generations, Forces, Frontiers.
Adventure was absolutely fun, really cementing that as the "Adventurer Formula" for me. Unleashed is absolutely amazing. Forces is meh. And Frontiers, although not a masterpiece like everyone said, still kept me getting into it.
SA2 left me frustrated and annoyed. Especially since it shifted so far away from SA1. Do I mean style? No. Absolutely not. Just little things that make it feel big. The hardest nostalgia carry if I've ever seen one.
I couldn't even finish Colors it was so bad. And trust me, I tried. I really did. But the controls were way too bad for me to keep at it.
Generations, although I enjoyed certain aspects, I just can't see it like everyone else. I definitely think the Mods made this so popular because after playing Unleashed, this feels so watered down.
Recently, I got Origins. I played up till 2. Wow. Just wow. It was the worst experience. And I listened to everyone. I knew it was a skill issue that I would get over with time. Or so I thought because there was nothing there to make me ever wanna go back. I just can't get into it with unfair hits, deaths and controls. At least I finished Sonic 1. So it wasn't a total Colors experience.
I'm really hoping people are right about these being bad ports because I just can't enjoy Colors and Origins. I haven’t even touched Superstars because of them. And it looks so fun! But if it's like the Classic games, I don't think I can handle it.

Im gonna give one of my many hot takes: HD Unleashed is extremely overrated and extremely flawed. Its probably my least favorite 3d sonic game( along with sa2)
My Sonic hot takes consists of Sonic Lost World being one of the most fun 3d Sonic games there is out there, same with Black Knight and Frontiers.
Another one has to do regarding the handheld games, I think that Sonic Drift 2 and Sonic Labyrinth which isn’t know by many but are awesome handheld titles.
Sonic has never had a 3D momentum based game.

@@alptugraakan7490 and that's the issue, just because a game has momentum in it doesn't mean it's momentum based.
All the games you mentioned to varying degrees has Sonic loosing speed going uphill and gaining speed going downhill.
However there's little to no level design that utilises this for skillful play.
In unleashed Windmill Isle Act 1 after the first shuttle loop you can cross the gap using pure momentum.
That doesn't change the fact that unleashed is a boost game because all the obstacles are built around the boost.
In SA1 you can run on walls using momentum, that is the only thing it ever uses momentum for. The rest of the level design heavily relies on the spindash to move through the stage quickly.
This is in stark contrast to the 2D momentum based games or the classics where you are expected to use momentum and even using the spin dash wastes time.
Everything you can do with the spindash you can do better with raw momentum unlike the adventure games where you NEED the spin dash for nearly all skillful play and you cannot just use your momentum in the same fashion.
So my point still stands, just because a game has momentum doesn't mean it is a momentum based game. We only 3D have spindash games and boost games.

I don't even know if these are hit takes or not, but:
1.) I prefer playing Black Knight with the Wiimote and Nunchuck, mostly because it's much more responsive. A regular controller is always recommended for the best experience, but I think it's only servicable.
2.) I think Mania is extremely overrated, it's not bad by any means. It's great, but I find it hard to come back to. And Sonic 3 doesn't have this issue. I go back to 3 and have a much better time and I don't know why.

Also, in my opinion if you did not 100% it then you did not beat it, as after collecting the Red Star Rings the Moon Medals appear in the levels which disappear after a while and collecting them is where the challenge lies. Getting them on the water slide in Episode Shadow is hellish.
Also, the hardest level in the game only unlocks when you collect 100 Red Rings, and most people didn't bother.

I personally prefer when Sonic games focus more on gimmicks, set dressings and platforming with only small doses of opportunities to go fast. As much as I love Mania, it can feel a bit...auto-pilot-y at times with you just constantly blazing through certain sections. I go back to Sonic 1 several times because of this. It's not the fastest game in the world, but I'm fine with that seeing as I still find it really enjoyable for everything else it does. And I actually like a lot of the levels in Sonic Superstars. Sure, some of the gimmicks can feel intrusive, but for the most part, I loved exploring those levels with the different characters and emerald powers.
Hot takes I have:
Black Knight and Shadow is criminally underrated. Some parts of Shadow were annoying, I know, but it’s pretty good. Black Knight is probably the most hidden gem in the franchise.
Mania never stood out to me. It’s very good, but I don’t play it as much as the others. (THIS DOESNT MEAN I THINK ITS BAD I LOVE IT BUT WHAT I SAID IS TRUE TO ME)
Sonic Forces is a pretty good game. Episode Shadow, the Avatar stuff, the boost stages, the Super Sonic DLC, amazing. It looked like it could be something great and it was, just not in the way everyone was expecting.
Rise of Lyric is only good cause of the art style.

1: People hate it for the swearing, which is not even a core thing about the game.
The original japanese barely has any explicit swearing(Possibly less than other Sonic media) and the implicit stuff like "Ki-sama"(very disrespectful way of saying "You", often likened to a swear) is absolutely often used across the series already.
Basically in a shutnell, people do not actually hate Shadow, they just want better localizations and they do not know it yet.
2: They hate it for guns...which existed and were used in prior games. Why should a mobian specifically not be allowed to use them? Especially Shadow, who belongs in the human sphere of actions the most? It's not even based on character or "he would not use them considering what happened to Maria", because people think his 06 campaign is Kino and it has Shadow launch missiles and fire hovercraft-miniguns everywhere.
3: They hate it for the aliens, even tho the alternative backstory-explanation of "Gerald's experiment magically worked when he shifted to a hedgehog form" is dumber, nothing more to say.
4: They hate it for the story being roughly put together. This is the most legit reasoning of this list, but then you really cannot say something SA1 did it right because it has similar issues of stuff just not adding up plotwise. Needing rewrites in a potential remake is basically a Sonic staple, why make a singular game more responsible than others?
Now, there are legitimately poor things about the game(Shadow's characterization for instance), I am not going to pretend like it is not very flawed. But how flawed it is was greatly overstated.

Sonic Colors Wii has the most fun iteration of the boost as a mechanic
Sonic Unleashed's day stages are very repetitive
Classic Sonic's stages in Generations can be more fun then the actual classics
Sonic Rush Adventure is the best Rush game
Frontiers is on par with Forces for me. Albeit, for different reasons
And finally, Sonic Heroes is the game of all time

One of my hot takes is that the Sonic Boom TV Show tries so hard to be funny, but falls flat hard. It's one of the worst Sonic tv shows in my opinion. Someone could take that as an insult and just flame me for that. If someone gets salty, that's not my problem lol.

My only hot take, sonic frontiers is a master piece in concept. It shows that Sega and the sonic team is now willing to try and recreate what the adventure series was all about. Innovative design and something new. With a story that flows well, is inclusive of more than just some gags or half-baked jokes, and even draws the player in more with its unique gameplay.
Even while the execution has mistakes, the fact of the matter was that it was made for the first time after so many years of the same format. No offense to the formula that even made colors or generations, but the original formula always felt linear and very limited which is normal. My only complaint of the original formula really shined in forces. It makes everything feel smaller than it should be and sometimes ends up making me question if you’re even supposed to really look hard for any kinds of extra content. Even as a small Easter egg. Nonetheless it was fun, when it was done right.
Now before anyone starts typing out how 06 did something similar, I don’t see it. Personally I see the attempt of the combat system with the punches and kicks but- I think we know what happened with it. Besides that, 06 is another game that has tried to innovate, new characters, new styles of combat, unique missions, and an inclusive story of the characters. (While..that story has the worst possible plot point according to the sonic community, myself included. *cough* Elise kiss scene.) But despite its bugs it was another one of the attempts Sega made to try and surprise the fan base, but this one was rushed to release as a complete and utter mess (if you know the reason, be happy to tell it. Not all sonic fans know the reason for it from what I understand and just see 06 as a curse of a game.)
Heres my hot take:
superstars is better than mania, ost and everything. not that i think mania is bad because if mania didn't have the issues i have with the game, it would be much better than superstars. but superstars beats it because of it being more unique and less derivative then mania, and it reminds me of sonic 1 gameplay wise which is my favorite of the mega drive sonic games alongside CD

I personally think the adventure games are boring asf and i do not like them at all i played the first one for about 10 minutes got bored and never touched it again.
And my other hot take is i don't think frontier's is good again i played the demo they had for it on switch (and before you say anything no the switch version wasn't the reason i didn't like it) but it just again wasn't fun or interesting too me but this is all subjective and just my opinion if you like these games i have nothing against you at all
Adventure 1 has pretty good levels at the end of the game (Talking about red Mountain.) But adventure 2 really isn't special to me.
My hot takes:
- The Advance trilogy is peak 2D Sonic.
- Sonic Rush is mid.
- Shadow the Hedgehog is my favorite Sonic game.
- Sonic 4 is overhated.
- I had more fun with 4, Forces and Colors: Ultimate than i had with Frontiers.
- Jun Senoue actually does great Genesis music (factoring Sonic 4 onwards).
- (Excluding Sonic Prime, as i haven't watched that one yet) Sonic Boom is the only truly great Sonic TV show, all the other ones range from mediocre to atrocious.
- Chao Garden should not come back, at least not in the way it was implemented in Sonic Adventure.
- Meta Era Sonic is goated.
I don't think shadow is the best sonic game but it's definitely overhated.
My Hot Takes
Take 1:
Sonic Adventure 2 and Heroes were subpar sonic games, especially SA2.. I had a hell of a lot more fun with the First Adventure game and funnily enough, Sonic 06, I hated the slippery controls on both games. I also felt like the homing attack in sonic adventure 2 was very inconsistent . At least on the 2 ports of the games I've played (PC and Xbox 360) I can sit down and play sonic adventure at any time and have fun playing it, with no frustrations over the controls, the same can't be said about adventure 2 and heroes. It's probably for the best that SEGA doesn't remaster those games because seeing how bad they botched the Colors remaster, I don't want those games being ruined.
Take 2:
Sonic Rush Adventure was THE best rush game out of the trilogy (Rush, Rush Adventure, Colors). I liked the adventure aspect of the game, as well as the refined boost and level design. Although I can easily go back and play any of those 3 games, I hate the 2nd half of rush where the level design falls off a cliff (literally). I liked the music better, the actual game story was, at least for sonic standards, fairly solid, and the final boss fight was fun. Unfortunately I think this was the last game where blaze was a complete playable character. (Besides the challenges in Sonic Generations) Such a great game, I wish it would get remastered somehow to a mainline console.
Take 3 Rise of Lyric had the potential to be a pretty good game. Nintendo struck a deal with SEGA to ensure 4 Nintendo exclusive sonic games. These games were 2 Olympic games, sonic lost world, and Rise of Lyric. If SEGA had not taken this deal, 1. Sonic Lost World would've been scrapped for a boost game most likely, and 2. Rise of Lyric would've probably ended up as a better game. Allowing the Rise of Lyric team, Big Red Button, to actually be able to release that game on the actual hardware they wanted to. (there's a whole video explaining the hellish development cycle) If the devs would've been able to spend more time developing the game rather than trying to port over an original Xbox One / PS4 title with CryEngine 3 over to the Wii U, a game console absolutely not compatible with that game engine, it would have been a pretty good game. It really sucks seeing mega corporations ruining games with greed.

The younger kids age 4, 7 in my family hate sonic adventure 2 and like sonic forces because mech levels are way harder then sonic forces. It also has more replayablity and customization which they love. While I prefer sonic adventure 2.

I'm not really a sonic fan more so someone who likes platforming games in general so of course i tried out most sonic games as well.
My hot takes would be.
The classic games aside from 3 aged very very bad, 1 and 2 weren't all that good to begin with.
Mania is the best 2d sonic and it isn't even close.
The handheld games like rush, colors and even lost world are generally better than the big releases.
Generations is the only above average 3d sonic, the rest is at best mid while gen is one of the best platformers ever.
Frontiers was a step in the wrong direction and among the worst platformers i ever played,the worst visual direction the series ever saw as well.
The atmosphere and unique stage environments of Forces are better, if Frontiers open zones and cyber space levels were based on the Forces zones it would be fire 🔥
My hot takes is that Lost World (i play the 3ds version) isnt bad, its actually really good. I dont really like the boost games THAT much because it feels more like holding a button with a few jumps, and they always take a 3d boost game and put mroe 2d in it. i also think 06 is the best game in the series

My own personal takes on the Sonic franchise in general:
Sonic Adventure 2 is extremely overrated. Personally I prefer the first Sonic Adventure over the second. I don't enjoy the mech stages in SA2 and Treasure Hunting is just a boring slog in SA2.
Sonic Lost World is an alright game, its not bad like some would make it out to be but it does have some annoying gimmicks that can sour the experience. It just needed more focus on it's major mechanic (Parkour) along with improved physics and controls.
Sonic the Hedgehog 1 is better than Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Something about the way levels flow in Sonic 2 just doesn't sit right with me. Sonic 1 feels more like a more well rounded experience to me.
Sonic Riders should've been the "style" for Sonic racers. I like what TSR does mechanically with the team based racing idea, but I don't like how it's just "cars/carts" it's just so boring aesthetically to me when Riders felt so uniquely Sonic.
Retail Sonic 06 is not an "underrated masterpiece" or any other honorific and no, P-06 does not change my mind, despite me liking P-06. Sonic 06 is a flaming disaster of a game which has haunted the series ever since it launched, does it have concepts that could've been done better? Absolutely. But what it could be/could've been isn't what it actually is.

Personally I don’t think the Japanese version of Sonic X is so much better than the English dub; more accurately, I don’t care enough to want to rewatch Sonic X again. I don’t care if the tone is “improved” or they have like 2 scenes that got censored in English, it’s not like it dramatically changes the show to me. That, and the soundtrack for the Japanese version feels out of place and kinda boring, at least to me
Maybe I just find Sonic X boring tbh, outside of key highlights that I prefer in english anyways because of recognisable voices and preference for that spinball sound effect like man why is it so good

• The adventure era stories aren’t that good. People confusing Shadow for Sonic. Shadow coincidentally being a super fast hedgehog like Sonic. Sonic surviving cause he used a fake emerald, which should not have been possible.
• The movie design for Sonic is the best he’s ever looked. Although I do like how artists draw him in IDW and Archie.
