  • The Aqara A100 Zigbee is the company's flagship smart lock available outside of China, which is part of a lineup of three locks in the A100 series; The A100, the A100 Pro, and this, the A100 Zigbee.
    - This video contains English and Traditional Chinese subtitles.
    Although the A100 Zigbee isn't generally available outside of a few Asian countries, the A100 Pro is available on AliEpress via the link below (not an affiliate link). Please be aware that whilst both the A100 Pro and A100 Zigbee are HomeKit compatible, and have much the same features, including Apple HomeKey, the A100 Pro is not capable of remote access for passcode management, which is only possible with the A100 Zigbee. You still have remote access to the lock via HomeKit of course.

    The A100 Zigbee features multiple methods by which you can unlock the door, which includes;
    - A fingerprint sensor
    - A keypad for passcodes
    - Apple HomeKey (NFC+)
    - Aqara NFC cards
    - Emergency keys
    There's also an option to power up the lock by using a power bank via the USB-C port if the batteries unexpectedly die. Apple HomeKey also allows you to still unlock the door, even if your iPhone's battery has died (Express mode only).
    The Lock doesn't require an Aqara hub for HomeKit functionality, or for some basic features even via the Aqara app, although with a Hub you get access to many more features, including automation integration.
    In this video, I go through nearly all the features of the lock, including HomeKit integration and using Apple HomeKey, as well a ton of extras via the Aqara app.
    Full disclosure: Aqara provided the lock and fitting free of charge, but no monetary compensation or sponsorship was offered. These facts do not in any way influence the opinions voiced in this video, and Aqara will not have seen this video or my feelings on this product before publication.
    The Aqara A100 Zigbee is currently only available in some parts of Asia as well as Russia, but Aqara is planning to expand availability to other regions later in the year.

    From your review, I really love that the build quality and design seems great.
    Although I really like it, here are some improvement ideas for future iterations in priority order :
    1. An energy harvesting system that would use the mechanical energy generated by actioning the handle to recharge an integrated battery (avoids to need to have to regularly replace batteries), but with still the USB-C connector for back-up
    2. Compatibility with the future protocol Matter
    3. Weatherproofing
    4. UWB integration for automatic auto unlock as it would be able to detect the distance / direction where the person is coming from

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      All good ideas. As regards the Matter integration, there’s a possibility that could happen via one of their two hubs - the M1S and M2 - as they’re going to be upgraded for Matter support later this year. Whether it’ll work that way I’m not sure however.

    Fair warning to all (comments below also mention this in some of the replies which I only saw after ordering the lock): this lock will always auto-lock in 2-3 seconds after being unlocked. There is no option to keep it unlocked or to only auto-lock after a custom number of minutes pass. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for how I want to use it. Hope they give us these features in a firmware update but won't hold my breath. I understand the U100 has a passage mode feature but I really need something with a handle and latch-bolt.

    Hi there! Thanks for this very good video. I have a question about the A100: If some burglar drills a hole in the door, big enough to put his hand through it, and opens the lock from the inside knob/night button, is is possible to configure the A100 to trigger the alarm and tell me remotely, once the away mode is activated? If yes, is it only possible with the Aqara hub? Thanks in advance!

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed rokem +1

      Hi, there are security features for the lock, so if someone tries to remove the lock panel from the outside, you will be alerted, and alarms can be set up with an Aqara hub to do this. This won’t cover the situation where the door itself is drilled. However, you can set up an automation to set lock to trigger an alarm if someone tries to unlock the door from the inside, but you would have to set automations up to cover certain hours, and/or with certain alarm modes. You would need a hub to do this, as you would need the hub to create the automations, as well as notify you when you’re away from home.

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety

      Hi, it sounds like what you have is called a ‘multi-point lock’ which has a security bolt at the top and bottom. Does the lock have a metal plate that runs from the top to bottom of the edge of the door? If so, this lock is probably not suitable. The A100 comes with its own mortice lock, so you would replace what you already have installed, but because multi point locks cover almost all of the side of the door, it might be difficult to fit this lock.

      I didn’t mention it in the video at the time, but only an admin can fully unlock the door including the night bolt, using the digital methods (fingerprint, NFC, passcode, HomeKey). If the night bolt is not engaged then all users can unlock the door, although you can set exclusion times so that people can’t unlock the door between certain hours.
      Anyone who has one of the physical keys can also fully unlock the door.

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed rokem

      Unfortunately all Aqara locks of this type are not rated for outdoor use, unless they have some form of coverage (porch etc). The only lock by Aqara that will be outdoor rated is the forthcoming U100, but that’s a deadbolt lock, not a mortice lock, so probably not suitable for your door. I’m not aware of any other lock like the A100 that can work outside and is compatible with HomeKit (assuming that’s a prerequisite). Nuki (Nuki Lock 3.0) and Yale (Yale Linus) make retrofit smart locks that fit to the inside of your existing lock. There are also compatible keypads each company sell.

      Hi, I can’t say for sure if the international model (A100 Zigbee) will work on the China server, but I suspect it’s not possible. Only the A100 Pro will work on the China server. The A100 Pro has everything that the A100 Zigbee has, except for remote access to create and manage passcodes, but I don’t think many people would use such a feature often to be honest.

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Hi, yes you can get the A100 to unlock via Siri or Google, although with Siri, if you're doing it via a HomePod/HomePod Mini, you will have to authenticate via your iPhone or iPad (security reasons). For Google, you might have to set up a pin code, but I'm not sure if that's mandatory or not.
      As for Bluetooth, you can't disable it in the lock, as it's still required for whenever you want to check local logs, or to change any settings in the lock, like add or remove users, or change a passcode for example. Additionally, if you're using HomeKit, along with Apple HomeKey, Bluetooth is still used as a direct connection method for unlocking the door, should all other options fail (that's unlikely, but still).
      You may want to hold off though, as Aqara has now released the D100 with Apple HomeKey, which has fully automatic unlocking - homekitnews.com/2022/05/09/aqara-release-second-homekey-compatible-smart-lock/

    Does the deadbolt engage automatically after unlocking it or do we have to manually engage it?
    If we unlock the door through homekit, can guests enter the house?
    If the deadbolt is not engaged while the door is closed, does the home app still show status as locked?
    Can the Home Key be shared among family members? Does it show up for them automatically if they are added to my Home?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety

      The main mortice deadbolts (the group of three bolts) can only be manually engaged or disengaged via the handles, but the latch bolt (the top bolt) is the one that locks or unlocks automatically. However, it doesn’t actually open, it merely becomes unlocked for the person outside the door, and even then only for a few seconds, before it becomes locked again.
      You can unlock the door from the home app/ HomeKit, but as before, the latch bolt only stays disengaged for a few seconds, so the guest would have to be outside the door, ready to go in.
      When the door is closed, the latch bolt automatically engages, so it’s locked. The home app will show the door as Locked, even if the Deadbolts are not engaged. The aqara app will show the lock as ‘unlocked’ although the door is still locked to anyone outside.
      When you add the lock to HomeKit, everyone else who has access to your HomeKit home will also get a digital HomeKey generated and added to their Apple Wallet, as long as the phone is capable of using HomeKey.

      There’s not an option for that unfortunately, either in HomeKit or the Aqara app. It probably due to the fact that the A100 automatically relocks itself after approximately 3-4 seconds, so it would probably cause more frustration that convenience.

Also, any rumors on when they might have an American version coming? You are correct, the style is not used here very often. I was wondering if they were going to come out with a deadbolt style that is more common here.

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Hi Gregg, thanks! To answer your question, the product name is “A100 Zigbee”, but it does indeed use Zigbee and Bluetooth. Bluetooth is used for HomeKit integration, so you don’t actually need a hub for the basic functions, whilst the Zigbee side of things is optional in the Aqara app. Without a hub you only get the basics, and to make changes or add/remove users and set up passcodes, you need to connect directly to the lock via Bluetooth in the Aqara app. With a hub, you can do these tasks remotely, as well as include the lock in automations, which is where the real power of customising the lock comes into play.
      As regards North America, I’ve seen Aqara tentatively mention a possible release, but also a bit non-committal. I can’t see a deadbolt version of this lock coming out without it looking majorly different, but I do think they’ll come out with a deadbolt lock for North America this year.

      Hi, there’s no way to keep the door unlocked I’m afraid. I think the reasoning behind this I also why it’s not weatherproof - as it’s mostly for apartments, where besides not being exposed to the elements, you’re less likely to be going in and out, like you would in a typical standalone house. • @homekitnews

      Usually you find people use either latch (Yale) type locks if they’re older doors, or mortice locks for more recent homes, sometimes also using multipoint locking mechanisms. This should be compatible with most doors, as the A100 includes the internal lock mechanism, that essentially replaces any lock you already have. This does also mean, however, that there would be the need to cut a few holes in the door to fit it, so this is the kind of thing best left to a qualified lock installer who can understand the provided template as well as have the tools to it the kinds of holes needed.

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed rokem

      Hi, the product in the video is the A100 Zigbee, whilst the AliExpress link is the A100 Pro, which I do mention in the description. The A100 Pro and Zigbee models will both work directly with HomeKit regardless of region, but to add them to the Aqara app, the A100 Pro will only work when connected to the China server, whilst the A100 Zigbee will work on the ‘Other’ server. This ‘Other’ server is interchangeable with the US server, but not the EU server. So when I added it to the Other Server, after switching back to the US server, the lock was still visible. This apparently isn’t the case for the EU server. It’ll still work in the EU as long as you have the server in the app set to the US or Other. You don’t need a hub for the lock to work, but if you want to use the lock in Aqara automations with other Aqara devices, then a hub is required.

      No. As I understand it this lock will not work with UK upvc multipoint doors. There are a few alternatives that will work with your existing multipoint 'gearbox' but most implementations are poor as they either deactivate the additional latches or require the user to lift the handle manually to activate the multi point latches and lock the door. This lock is also not compatible with UK weather - no IP rating so only suited to use on an interior doors which is a huge oversight. Seems It's a bit useless for the typical UK smart home, which is a shame as Aqara kit is pretty good.

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety

      Hi, unfortunately I don’t have the Schlage, and it seems hard to get right now. They both work with HomeKit and have the HomeKey functionality, but they’re quite different locks in a few ways, mainly the Aqara is a mortice type lock, whilst the Schlage is a deadbolt type lock. One main difference is that Aqara haven’t added the ‘Shared Access’ feature, which allows you to set up temporary passcodes directly within the Home app. You can still do the same type of thing in the Aqara app however.
      The Aqara app wins for me on the many ways it can be opened - fingerprint, NFC card, HomeKey, app, passcode. As it uses Zigbee there are some great ways you can also integrate the lock into automations with other Aqara devices, like their alarm system.
      The Schlage is a lot easier to install though, which is an important consideration.

    Hi, nice review.
    Regarding to the auto lock function, you mentioned that only the latch bolt can auto lock after a few seconds, not the mortise lock. Do you have any idea why does it works that way?
    Isn't it not safe enough if I forget to lock the mortise lock and went outside?
    I am not using Apple phone. So I can only check Aqara app on the door lock status. If the mortise lock is not locked, you said I will see the door status as 'unlocked'. This will make me worry, isn't it?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety

      Hi, glad you like the review. The mortice and latch bolts aren’t motorised, so the way the lock works is by connecting or disconnecting the handles from access to these locks. The latch bolt is always in the ‘out’ position, so it’s easy for this to ensure the door is locked once closed. As there’s no motor, it requires you to use the handle to engage the mortice bolt. As for the Aqara app and the way it reports the state of the lock, as long as it shows the door is closed, you know the door is ‘locked’. Unfortunately Aqara’s terminology is the problem here, so ‘closed’ should probably be ‘locked’ and ‘locked’ should probably be ‘double locked’ maybe.

      @@homekitnews Thanks for the detail reply :)
      I'm quite new to digital lock. I thought that they are motorised. Is it common that most of them are not motorised like Aqara A100?
      Sorry. I still a bit confuse on the "locked" state in Aqara app. If the mortise bolt is not locked, door status in the app will show as 'unlocked', right?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @@cathrynpuffy6165 it all depends on the smart lock. Deadbolt smart locks for use in the US are motorised, because they need to turn the deadbolt in order for the door to be opened. The A100 has a latch bolt and mortice bolt. On this particular lock, the Motorised bit is a small part that either connects or disconnects the handles from the two bolts. So when the latch bolt and handle are connected, turning the handle allows the latch and mortice bolts to turn. As regards the locked status and how it’s reported, whenever the door is closed, the door is always locked, because the latch bolt can’t be ‘unlatched’ from the outside, unless you use one of the unlock methods. Aqara only reports the lock as ‘locked’ when the mortice bolt is turned to the locked position, even though the door is in fact locked. So as I said before, Aqara’s way of describing the state of the lock isn’t quite correct. The app should say ‘locked’ when the door is closed (as it’s automatically locked when the door is closed), and it should say something like ‘double locked’ when the mortice bolt is engaged. In HomeKit the lock will always say ‘locked’ when the door is closed, at least with this lock.

      Hi, the Aqara A100 Pro and the A100 Zigbee (in the video) both use Zigbee, but only the A100 Zigbee can use remote access via a Zigbee hub within the Aqara app for things like remote operation and managing Access codes. The A100 Pro can’t do this. In order to add these devices to the Aqara app, you initially have to set the app to the ‘Other’ server. Once added to this server, it will then also show up on the other servers (except for China). Hi Grigoris, glad you liked the video. At present, you can add it to the Aqara app using “Other” in the server section, as this lock is not designed for the Chinese market. The good news is that once added to Other, the lock also appeared when I logged into the US server (I use US and China servers), so it should be the same for the EU I suspect.
      You don’t need a hub for HomeKit, as it uses Bluetooth (via a home hub), and even in the Aqara app, as long as you’re in range of the lock, you can use Bluetooth there too. Connecting to an Aqara hub is optional, but you get more functionality by connecting it or a hub.
      The lock syncs reasonably fast in the Home app, and in Aqara too.
      You can add 50 separate fingerprints to the lock.
      You can use Geofencing to make the A100 unlock, but it will only stay unlocked for maybe 2 seconds, before the lock re-engages.
      The A100 Zigbee is international, whilst the A100 and A100 Pro are for the Chinese market.
      You might eventually be able to buy it on AliExpress, but the issue right now is that this lock needs a professional installation, so Aqara need to be able to set up a network of installers before they can start to sell it with confidence in areas outside of Asia.
      We have a steel security door here, and it was able to be installed without any problems, but it does depend on the materials inside the door too.
      The batteries should give you 18 months on average.

I installed this lock yesterday and I found the strike plate provided in my box to be different from the installation video. there is no place for the small bolt (what is it?)beneath the latch bolt to go in. Besides the latch bolt won't go inside the strike plate hole correctly, maybe I need the carpenter again! Now whenever I close the door, I have this door unlock alarm coming on and it will stop within 5 seconds. also the Aqara app says "Door is not completely locked"- is it due to this latch bolt not closing fully or the small latch beneath the latch bolt not functioning? When I push it both Aqara app and Home app says Door is locked! ? Otherwise Apple home app always says Unlocked and I can't lock by tapping the lock icon in home app. What should be the strike plate orientation for this to correctly work?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed rokem +1

      Hi, the small triangle-shaped latch below the standard latch bolt at the top is a safety and security feature that can tell if the door is either not closed or if someone is trying to pry the door open. If this is not able to sit correctly (it should be pressed in when the door is closed), you are going to experience exactly what is happening to you now via the lock and app. You should contact the seller you purchased the lock from to see about a replacement strike plate, or maybe get a worker to align the plate you have correctly, in order to fix it so everything sits in place. Alternatively, if you still have the paper Installation template, this also has a shape for the strike plate, so maybe you can find one that matches those dimensions or get a blank one and get someone to cut the relevant holes. To me, it sounds like the security latch is slipping into the same recess that is designed only for the latch bolt.

    Great review! But i'm still having a question that if i don't use a hub to pair with the lock, what features that i will not able to access? for example, will assign multiple fingerprints require a hub and will home kit still show me the current status of the lock with out a hub?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed rokem +1

      Hi, you don't need an Aqara hub for any extra features, unless you want remote access to the lock via the Aqara app. With a hub, you can access the lock remotely, and create, alter, or delete users and codes etc. within the Aqara app.
      When it comes to assigning a fingerprint or adding an Aqara NFC card to be used, you do need to physically be next to the lock, for obvious reasons, so remote access is not relevant here.
      This is all part of the Aqara side of things, but if you don't use a hub, the Aqara app is still required to add, remove or edit users, which is achieved by a direct connection between the admin/account holder's phone and the lock, using Bluetooth.
      In HomeKit, you can still access the lock remotely even without a hub, as long as you have an Apple Home Hub (Apple TV, HomePid, HomePod Mini), which allows you to check the status of the lock, and open and close it. Because user management is all done on the Aqara side of things, you can't do anything in HomeKit regarding users.
      I should add that without a hub, you can't use the lock for automations created in the Aqara app, although you can create automations within HomeKit. The automations available in the Aqara app are far more advanced than those in HomeKit, although they're limited to working with Aqara products.
      I hope that answers the question, but if you have further questions, feel free to ask.

      These kinds of locks aren't very common in the US, but as long as you're willing to cut the relevant holes in the door to accommodate the lock, there's no reason why you can't use it - although be aware it's not waterproof, so unless your door is for an apartment or the door has some form of shelter, it's not going to be a good idea to use it. I'd advise getting someone who's experienced in cutting holes in doors to fit something like this too.
      As regards AliExpress, I've never had any issues with shopping there in the four years I've been using their services, but it's important to note that any stores on AliExpress will only sell the A100 'Pro', not the A100 'Zigbee' as seen in this video. The main differences are that the A100 pro will only work with a hub connected to their China server, although using a hub is not required, especially if you only plan to use it within HomeKit. The other difference is that you can't remotely access the A100 pro via the Aqara app for passcode management. My neighbor has the same lock, from the same store, and it's been working without a problem for almost two months. I also have an Aqara HM1S-G02 gateway, but the EU version. Well, I'm curious how it will work together.

    How does this work with multipoint door locks that are often found in the UK? Is it compatible?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed rokem +1

      Hi, it would replace the lock mechanism that’s already installed in your door, but as a lot of multipoint doors have a metal strip going along the length of the door, it may not be possible to install it. If you were able to make the necessary holes in the door for the mortice deadbolts, the multipoint locks usually found on the top and bottom of the door would be unused, as there’s no mechanism to control them from this lock.

    What would you recommend between this model and the N200? Also, do you know what its price will be and when it can be ordered? Thank you!

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      I think the A100 is probably a better lock due to the Zigbee and HomeKey support. Additionally, the N200 is designed to work with HomeKit and Mi Home, but not the Aqara app. This doesn't matter if you only use HomeKit, but it's also important to note that the N200 and the A100 Pro are only officially available in China. The A100 Zigbee is available outside of China in certain territories, so it depends on where you live as to how easy it is to get hold of, and at what price.

      @@homekitnews Thanks for your quick reply. I posted twice this comment but it does not appear.
      Can you tell me if the N200 (which works through a Bluetooth hub) can set a temporary password remotely, for example 3 days. Or this can be done only using a zigbee version? I'll be using this for Airbnb and I need to set a temporary password when I'm away from the lock. With A100 you can set a temporary password when you're away from the lock?

    • @homekitnews
      @homekitnews  Pƙed 2 lety +1

      Hi, as I understand it, the only locks that will allow for remote passcode management are the Aqara A100 Zigbee and the Aqara D100 Zigbee. The Aqara N200 and the Aqara A100 Pro don’t have the option to manage passcodes remotely.

      If you have an Aqara hub, you can open the lock remotely through Aqara. If you use HomeKit as well, you can open the door remotely but you need an Apple a home Hub, as I’ve already said. Using Siri (on your phone, for example) relies on a home hub, as the A100 connects to your home hub using Bluetooth.
