- Can smart locks provide more than convenience? From thermostats and rugs to lights and speakers, smart home technology upgrades have gained popularity since the Covid-19 pandemic. Smart home locks are often keyless and can be opened with a passcode or opened from your phone. But do these actually increase the security of your home?
WSJ asked Marc Tobias, a lock security expert, to test out the Google Nest x Yale Lock by looking at the hardware, convenience and security of the lock.

Ngl, this is a straight up ad disguised poorly
Fr, at least tell it is sponsored content
@Green Fog it's a Google product lol
@@FreeminderXIII 😂
A realistic security test would at least give an expert or even better a team of experts a month or so to play with it. Let's be realistic the risk isn't someone randomly coming up against a new device it'll be when someone discovers an easy compromise and shares it widely. WSJ you shouldn't be advertising products, you should be giving honest reviews.
They gotta make money too!
This is not a review. This is just an ad. Don’t expect anything else from corporate media.
Wait but what kind of burglar will have a month to do this?
@@jaztin7960, no dummy in the lock picking world we post of flaws and bypass tools for locks. So there are many smart locks that can be bypassed in seconds without destroying them. The burglar goes for the easiest way to enter which was either the glass or the fact that the door could easily be kicked down.
What team of experts? What month? Just wait till neighbour points a roof camera to your lock.
shortly after this
"Hello everyone, this is the lock picking lawyer and today I’m going to show you why you shouldn’t buy the Yale lock"
deff!!
He already did.
@@AbhishekThakur-wl1pl , he did? Do you have a link? I couldn’t find the video of Lockpickinglawyer picking the Yale Nest lock.
This is the comment I was hoping to find! I would love to see him make a video on this lock!
@@AbhishekThakur-wl1pl link?
This is clearly an ADVERTISEMENT!
YES IT IS 😂😂😂
The bad part is that they didn't disclose it. So I have reported this
@@thunderb00m it's a Google product lol
They are not even try to unlock the "tech" lock. Everything y see on the internet is just a scam
@@thunderb00m you report google to google 😂
His bump tool won’t work too well on the Yale smart lock, but will work great on the window next to it.
@jfagiag faeiea are you single?
Which he already said, if you watched the video.
Tbh if someone is prepared to break the glass, you're in bigger trouble and that's pretty hard to prevent without upgrading the entire home's physical security.
classic lol
WASTE OF TIME ALERT: Spoiler, he doesn't even try to force it, manipulate it or break it to enter and simply says "looks good to me"
What do you mean force or break it? If it's not easily picked or hacked then the intruder will just opt to break a window. Drilling into a lock would draw more attention than breaking a window
@@fedstr2025 Not if you're wearing blues and driving a van that says "locksmith"
just a 5 minute ad, nothing else.
The Lockpicking Lawyer would've probably have done a way better job
@@qpSubZeroqp And yet he has never broken into any of these types of locks (because you can't).
Reality with break-ins is the thieves don't pick locks, they use brute force to kick a door in, or they break the glass if there is any on the door. You are far better off reinforcing and hardening your door and jamb before you upgrade to smart locks. These locks are meant for convenience and buying into a connected home.
He did say that in the video.
Yeah but some of us are super lazy so we need key card locks not touch locks.... not sure why they did not look into that first.... just saying...
What happened to CZcams labeling Ads?? This is shady. You are supposed to disclose the fact that you are clearly advertising this product.
Shows that WSJ is actually trying to pass this as legitimate journalism. Also shows that CZcams aka Google is totally fine with that as long as it aligns with their interests. The lock is a Google product after all.
This has to be the worst lock I have seen in my life
5:15 "copies of keys today can be expensive"
They're like $2 each, dude.
Back in his time $2 was like having $100
Clearly this is an ad where 2$ for a spare is too much but 300$ for a lock is great value 🤦🏻♂️
"You can hear the motor driving the lock"
LockPickingLawyer would probably use a rotating magnet to turn the motor.
You couldn’t carry the magnet it would take to move the lock.
@@bngr_bngr nah, size is not the issue here, you can fit a magnet in your hand that can rip off your arm. The problem is the insides could be insulated in ferromagnetic housing
I'd like to think Yale and Nest thought of that.
Looking lockpickinglawyer comments and not disappointed 😂
I see "Leading Lock Expert" but no Lock Picking Lawyer, i'm out.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
This is definitely an ad. No way a veteran locksmith like him would ever speak highly of a smart lock if it was his own words.
We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version czcams.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.
Nah. Guys please call Lock Picking Lawyer.
“Copies of keys can be expensive” really? 3 bucks maybe
Last i check it’s $1 at walmart
It's killer. I'm sad that where I'm moving to doesn't have this but this video did tell me how important it will be to install my own security cameras when you're a renting vs owning the property. If you can afford it, please get it! It's a game changer.
This looks perfect for high traffic areas. Like offices/hotels airbnb etc.
So you can change the code frequently
He put it as nice as he could to make it sound like it's slightly better than a regular lock. Because of the other things that were not tested.
This feels like an ad for smart locks but with extra steps
I demand for Lock Picking Lawyer
With all respect, you got Industrial revolution guys picking a computer. 😂
I watched whole video, thinking he is gonna break the lock at any moment now...... 😅
Same, was so disappointed at the end
To pick this lock, you don’t ask a locksmith. You ask a hacker. Old mechanical gen vs next gen.
that’s not how it works, the weakest link of any lock is the keyhole
And yet none of these have ever been hacked and certainly never would not be by someone stupid enough to be a burglar. As he pointed out, they would just break a window if they couldn't get in through the lock.
It's kinda like asking a diesel mechanic to diagnose what's wrong with a Tesla motor.
Very clever to talk about security when using a glass and wood door :-)
He addresses that 🙄
Modern glasses can have differen level of break protection. Sandwich glasses with high strength films on or inside of them.
And 90% of doors could probably get kicked in easily as well. Safety is an illusion and locks don’t always keep you safe.
WSJ: I’ll give this a 4/5
“ Hello everyone, this is the lock picking lawyer and today I’m going to show you why you shouldn’t buy the Yale lock”
Then why hasn’t he done a video on this specific lock?
There is an old saying.
"Locks keep honest people out"
Good advertisement for Yale😉
I have this lock but it’s not the Google one they sell a regular Yale with wifi that can connect to Alexa Google Apple HomeKit and Samsung Smart things it a pretty cool lock the thing I like about it is that when you come home and your within 20 ft of the lock it opens by itself so you don’t have to type the code in when your hands are full
Why is this whole video just one long ad for a Yale smart lock?
Lockpickinglawyer: hold my beer, oh it's unlocked already
I wanna report it for "unwanted commercial content" but it means i report google to google 😂😂😂
Let's ask a horse carriage expert about the steam engine carriage train we have just developed.
For those who don't know, Marc Tobias is a legend in the lockpicking scene
Lol easy to hack it
Exactly. He's a legend in traditional locks. Hackers can easily crack smart locks
I will save you time. The guy did not even attempt to open the lock...
You don’t need an expert lock breaker to beat a smart lock. You need an expert hacker. Just like you wouldn’t bring a hacker to open the glovebox of a Soviet-era tank.
We need the LockPicking Lawyeron this one !
"... and Nest a KEY player in.." - bravo 👏🏽; I see what you did there
Okay let's see the lockpicking lawyer now
Which lock allows you to add multiple homes (more than 5)? Nest offers up to 5 homes via Google home and I need more than 5. Any thoughts?
LPL might suggest placing a strong neodymium magnet to open digital lock
I think the thing i hate most in modern design is capacitive touch screen buttons that could be physical buttons. Imagine trying to get this hideous thing to work in the rain.
You need to talk to Lockpicking Lawyer, never has been stumped by a lock yet.
This is an advert that has nothing to do with smart locks except for one brand.. the brand that paid for the advert.

ok, when you have glass main door..easiest way is to break small hole and open the door by hand from inside..? or am I something missing?
Didn't realize I was watching an ad! Sharon they got me
"So what better person to test this"
Just to be clear, the guy that breaks into smart locks is likely going to have a background in hacking, not lockpicking.
I haven't finished video yet, I could be proven wrong!
The obvious information is: if you can’t picked up the lock, break the nearest glass. So the real advise must be :first take a plain multi security points door.
my house uses hardened door and a solid metal-concrete filled tube bar to secure front door. You could broke the key but not slamming into a barred door
Thank you now you are the real master class
Interesting video but I feel not enough was done to test the lock security.
Lock picking lawyer : hello master
Maybe I should just keep my basic lock and figure out how to get in in case I'm locked out.
what if someone break the glass next to the lock, access the lock from the inside and unlock the door?
Kind of besides the point. Same thing can be said about installing a 1m thick steel door. Someone could break de window and enter in the house.
I sayed in an Air BnB with a Yale smart lock once. It took just one night for me to realize I never wanted a Yale smartlock. I think I spent more time fumbling with the darn thing than I did sleeping inside the Air BnB.
You can put multiple locks on that door, will just break the glass to unlock it.
Big brain time!
I noticed that from the beginning, installing an expensive lock in a glass door lol
you should do a only hand video with LPL
Correct me if I'm wrong. What is someone break the glass/montior of that lock making touch insensitive and you don't have that mobile option with you .
In that kind of situation what can be done?
If glass is broken, the only other option I see is mobile.
You can render normal looks inusable with extreme ease as well...
Somebody call the LPL!
A lock connected to internet sounds Completely safe NO HARM at all ... It's not like NSA or FBI is going to hack it!
What a nice ad I just watched
It seems super secure until someone walks by with an app that auto unlocks it
Yes I love advertisements!
I really felt this was an ad for the company.
The only difference is hackers will unlock your doors instead of lockpickers.
I want something like this but for my commercial building. I own a business and often rent it out to people. I would love to hand them codes that only work on certain days and times instead of a copy of my key. Does anyone know if this would could be used on a commercial building or of any that are out there? 👀
Very good
What about the battery life?
So is nest super secure, do they have a single signal streams that is sent in the clear like the burglar alarm that rhymes with Scimply Face? Does the lock have firmware that can be upgraded to make up for bugs and vulnerabilities that come up over the life of the product? The question is how much will it slow the adversary down, more time is better, but there should be other layers of security to catch the perp when they are trying to get past the lock. If nest is hacked and its also connected to the security system well then you get the picture.
4:43 locks only help keep an honest man honest😂
So you brought an Oldman to try break a smartlock. LOL.
LockPickingLawyer has annihilated all of these. I don't think he's ever recommended a smart lock or thumb print lock.
Is this an ad? What's going on
So how do you get in your house when the power goes out?
This is definitely an advertisement.
This wasn't much of a security test. You didn't really give him a chance to break in. He could have used force to break the lock casing off or could have attempted to disconnect the electrical signal.
Real question is do you want the theft to break a 60-100$ lock or a 500$ window ?
Either way if the theft want to get in he will. The difference will be how much that intrusion will cost you.
Brute force by Break glass and open a door is like Military invasion cross the custom with passports. Is Russian Military passports and Visa approved to enter Ukraine? The officials and technologies companies does not guarantee if you do not play with rules.
There is video of a hacker opening someone's door with a smartlock on it. Walked right in while the people were home.
Lol, I cannot imagine leaving in a home with all of these glass walls and doors. Why do you even need a lock if anyone, even a child, can easily break the glass or the door itself? Maybe for not letting your cat go out
Well said. Its beyond me how people can feel safe in such homes. What gets most on my nerves is the fact that people are willing tovmake doors with glass.
@@paganlecter6819 they pay for security in their gated communities, and everything is insured
We all grow up in different areas. In my old neighborhood, it was very common for people to leave their front doors unlocked almost all of the time. People would also leave their garage doors open and unattended. Some people feel the need for multiple locks on their doors and with bars on their windows while others don't. The real question you should be asking is whether it is normal to feel threatened so much by intruders and if there is anything you can do to get away or change that problem.
@@dkamikaw in my case I need to change the country or even a continent)
@@vladrazym9955 I hope things aren't too bad for you. I live in a super safe area but I would still like to change my country or continent. The grass is always greener...
Best ad for a lock or replace all you windows with a tempered or bulletproof glass
0:46 what better person? Why, The Lockpicking Lawyer of course
Wonderful Yale Ad 👍
That wasn't a real security test. It was a sales pitch for the yale lock.
Prob 90% of homes here in S.Korea use smart locks. Haven't had to carry a home key in ages.
What do you do to open your door if the lock fails i think this is a important aspect and they didn't cover it Quickset has his own version of it and it has a key cylinder below the keypad
Except that key cylinder is easily picked. I think that original lock on the door may have been a kwikset
First glimpse thieves go for the windows or kick door open. There goes your fancy smart door lock 😎
All these professionals and we can't order the lock in the correct finish? 🤣
What happens if there's a fault with the motor when you are trying to get in at 3am in the morning?🤣
There should be a CZcams channel seeing issues with these types of locks (checks LockPickingLawer...)
He consults all these companies and yet the vast majority of locks are still garbage.
Great ad for Yale
I just watched an infomercial. Nice "reporting" WSJ. Your lock expert didn't even try to break in on that lock.
"Connectorize" is not a word.
Repeat pressing the same key on the touch pad, won't it leave an imprint eventually?
