  • On this episode, Seth is joined by Assistant Director of Engineering, Joe Thielen, Senior Ballistician Jayden Quinlan, and Project Engineer, Miles Neville. The discussion covers our new ELD-VT bullet specifically, the design, and the application. This exciting new bullet takes our extremely low-drag match bullet shape and pairs it with the rapid fragmentation of our varmint bullets, creating a dual-purpose, long-range varmint and target bullet. By utilizing a unique core configuration, the bullets have excellent drag characteristics and exceptional terminal performance. We hope you enjoy the show.

      FWIW: I was using the 100gr Nosler BT for 4 years in the Grendel, night hunting hogs, coyotes, and bobcats. Fantastic bullet. I was getting 2,750 MV with those over 29.9gr of Benchmark from a 16" barrel. Maybe a bit hot but I've launched about 1k5 of them without flattened or blown primers. YMMV.

    This sounds great for the 6 ARC. I think the 100+gr bullets are just a tad heavy for the 6 ARC in a gas gun, I get pressure signs and poor brass life getting them to a decent velocity. I have been reloading with 90gr bullets with way better results, the BC is not as good but the added velocity make up for it out to 600 yards.

    Edit: oh, never mind, it's a proprietary bullet for the 22 ARC... Too long for 5.56 AR mags, and requires a twist faster than most of the popular .22 cal bolt guns... Guess no one I know will be buying any of those...

      @aaronunterseher1627 Před 8 měsíci

      This is as ignorant's as its gets
      So what it doesnt fit in the 5.56 /.223 not everything needs to be centered around gas guns and there functionality...
      You still have 22x250, 22 creed, 22 grendel, 22 arc, 224 valk, 223/5.56 and there is no reason why any modern built rifle wont be able to facilitate these projectiles specially since the trend to heavy high BC lead hasnonly increased over the last decade or soo
      Idk about you but both my bolt guns are 1:8 in .223 so idk what friends you have, sure there not gonna load into grand papis 700 with a 1:14 but most modern bolt guns are down in the 1:8 mark now
      This is also a platform launch give it a couple years and youll likely see a bullet in the 50gr mark with BCs hovering around 68s and work with a 1:9 and will be ar mag length... (speculation) i doubt they will religate this to just the top of the ladder and lose the bottom of the ladder in the marketplace as a hole...

    • @joearledge
      @joearledge Před 8 měsíci

      @@aaronunterseher1627 1:8 is about the tightest that most 22-250 get, unless you do something custom and get tighter. If you listened to the video, they said 1:8 "MIGHT" be able to stabilize it. You can find 224 Valk down to about 1:6.5. 22-250 is a varmint rifle, so most(not all) of those guys stay away from tight twists because too many RPM's make thin jacket boo-lots go POP! 224 Valk is around but not very popular. 22 creed and 22 grendle are, for all practical purposes, still wild cat rounds. Last I checked, 22 creed gives you about 2,000 rounds before it's a smooth bore(great for rat-shot!), about half that for good accuracy. So it seems cool, but a lot of people shy away from barrel burners. 22 ARC is brand new(obviously). Based on the 6 ARC, I expect great things, but at what cost? If it burns barrels, many will stay away from it. Maybe it'll be the new 6.5 creed but 1,000X better! 10,000 round barrel life, mach Jesus velocity, sub 0.25 MOA at 5,000 meters with the cheapest plinking ammo and a blind shooter....
      Any way you cut it, it's a proprietary bullet for the 22 ARC, that works in 224 valk, a couple of wild cat cartridges, and some custom stuff... Whether you like it or not sweet cheeks, 223 rem/ 5.56 is the most popular center fire 22 in the world... This is supposed to be a varmint round, and MOST 22 varmint barrels, regardless of cartridge, can't stabilize it... If you make a 22 cal varmint bullet that wont fit for 95% of either of those 2 groups, then you're not going to sell a butt load of them... that just business and marketing facts there cup cake

    62gr ELD-VT Bullet

      Won't work, the 62gr is too long for 5.7x28 and there would probably be pressure issues as well.

      @@mark-koba 5.7x28mm base diameter is larger. Going to hornet would be going in the wrong direction. I'm thinking more like 225 JAWS Micro Mag.

      @fpjeepy05 Před 8 měsíci

      @mark-koba The case volume of the 22 spitfire isn't much more than 5.7x28. I think with a 62gr eld-vt it would be too long to fit in a pistol grip mag. Ogive length is around 0.60" so for OAL of 1.7" we are looking at case length around 1". 22 spitfire is about 1.28" ... 225 JAWS micro mag.

      What he said^^. But… this is a new offering, and they aren’t starting off with every possible caliber/bullet length available. Since it’s based of their existing eldx/eldm bullets, they could possibly make one based of of the 73gr eldm. I’d assume it’d be close to 58-60gr but should still have a BC in the low-mid 0.3 range

    • @tyler6147

      Based on what I have been reading, with these bullets a 105 grain using this design, the physical bullet would be about the same size as a 123-124 grain 6mm bullet. That grain weight does not exist for a whole host of reasons. To get the equivalent of a 115 grain 6mm these would probably top out around 97-98 grain. A 91-92 grain of this design would be roughly equal to a 108 grain in size.

Not too long ago, a year ago or so, had a conversation with them regarding the 204 40 gr vmax. I discussed accuracy, weight, and bc. So I would bet in the near future they will have one in 204.

    I love Hornady but this is a very bad bullet in my opinion. Bring back the Interbonds! This ELDX it way to explosive. So you may be correct that it’s a long range bullet but use it out of my 25-06 push velocities and have my buck of a lifetime come in at 50 yards and hit the shoulder! Boom it blows up and won’t penetrate to the vitals loosing my dream buck. No thank you Hornady

      I heard shooting varmints which explode as it is with a proportional cartridge... (.223 remington can split coyotes open nearly in half with vmaxs or varmint grenades)
      They strickly not only advise but strongly state these bullets are not meant for standard medium to large game animals at any range
      Additionally if you are going hunting and choose to stand on the side of ignorance to the equipment youre gonna use that not the companies fault youre terrible gun owner and hunter in the same breath.
