      Aidy Madd - how are you doing? I only ask because I am a recorder player who bought one of these a few years ago but haven't ever really played it. my main issue with it is the mouthpiece - it feels unnatural/uncomfortable to me, and unlike other similar instruments (Clarineo and the Clariphone) it cannot be changed.

    Fabulous! I have worst finger dexterity for instruments. I can draw not too bad, my writing is neat (when I try) but it took me five times longer than anyone else to learn to type. I now type very fast. I have never been able to master an instrument. Fingers must work in unison to do so - typing is essentially one finger at a time. It's not my fingers, it's my brain. This looks promising. I have a passion for jazz and would love to do more than hum along!

    I bought a xaphoon but not on the original Maui xaphoon website, it doesn't have the metal plate for the logo on the body of it (the logo thing is just pressed in). Also it seems to be made of a much more matte black plastic. I've played it and it seems fine apart from it always being very difficult to get the low notes and they often sound very foggy. I'm an experienced sax player but I understand this is a fairly different instrument. How am I to know that my xaphoon is a real one and not a badly manufactured nock off? It also has two quite significant mold lines down the sides.
    Many thanks, Sam.

I guess this derives from the saliva, but I didn't expect it to be there after such a short time. With the plastic one you probably don't get this but the sound quality might not be as good. +Denise Jeannette Clarinet skill will definitely help you. It takes a bit less breath pressure and the fingering takes some getting used to. I think Wittman's advice to just add a few notes at a time are good. Covering the holes properly is very important and the tone is a little more "drifty" than a clarinet's, so his advice about practicing the tremolo is good too. You are probably much better than me by now!

    So it's NOT a toy. I play the Kunath clarineau and improvise in a Benny Goodman-like style. Somebody told me, the xaphoon was just a toy. Here it doesn't sound like that--you even play high notes like I do with my overblowing keys. So it's not a toy. Well, I came from recorder and will certainly stay with clarineau.

    I can hold a tone for 3 seconds. Xaphoon is ten times as difficult as alto sax.

      +zzausel It sounds like your reed might not be adjusted correctly. You should see a line of black above the reed tip. Once I adjusted mine, the tone came a LOT easier. It is not quite the same reed adjustment as a clarinet or sax. (play both)

      Double reeds are not for me. I'm progressing okay on my Xaph, and can sustain a tone at least 5 seconds. The embouchure muscles take time to get stronger. If you are still looking for something easier, there are some nice Seidel or Suzuki harmonicas.

      +Ken Natco I just bought one and it arrived today. And man oh man, as someone who only plays the piano it has quite the learning curve! Do you also have the problem that your teeth are hurting your bottom lip a bit? Anyways, by the end of today I have managed to get some clean tones out but I can't hold them very long, they oscillate quite a lot.

      Thanks for your reply! Good to hear that. I looked around on the internet and clarinet players seem to have it even worse with the lip hurting since more lip pressure is required. Another major difficulty for me is the finger placement. I'm getting finger cramps when I try to allign them in just the right way so that all the holes are closed. Is that normal too or are my hand weird like that?

      John Camacho I believe this was done on purpose somehow, possibly post editing, but probably pre editing because the instruments can be heard at their best volume the entire time. It's probably to let the music be heard more than the voices.

    I just bought one and it came in the mail today. I cant make any sound out of it except for an annoying squak. Doesnt matter what holes I have covered. I play recorder and thought this would be easy. Now I feel like I have been scammed. I think this guy isnt playing. I think its dubbed with a real sax or something.

      I've been playing the Xaphoon for 30 years and I can assure you this is no scam. Based on what you wrote, you're expecting this to be a recorder and are not bringing the necessary skills of the reed player (breathing, strenghtening the lower lip muscles to allow the reed to vibrate) to the table.

    • @LadyBGoode-gr8wm
      @LadyBGoode-gr8wm Před 3 lety +1

      @@garyfriedman4001 Thank you for saying so. I was so disappointed yesterday. To be fair, none of the Xaphoon videos mention anything about that, even though there are "beginner" videos out there. It would be a no-brainer for someone who comes to this as a saxophone player, of course. I have been watching "Sax Embouchure" vids this morning and trying to get something more musical out of this thing. LOL I have read some reviews on amazon and some have said a better reed was helpful as well (which I also know nothing about :)

      @@LadyBGoode-gr8wm Glad I was able to help. The only other thing I can add (speaking as a person who taught himself to play this, without ANY wind instrument experience prior) is that while there is a learning curve, it is well worth the investment, as this instrument turns heads and brings considerable amounts of joy to all who hear it. Good luck!
