An incredible piece of machinery! Pretty cool how it connected Palisades Tahoe and Alpine Meadows, making it the biggest ski resorts in the U.S.

I remember when they first announced this proposal about 8 years ago, and I have to say, its very cool to see it come to fruition. A very long ride, low capacity, tall towers making it more susceptible to storms, and not a huge difference in travel time compared to shuttle buses, maybe not the best executed. At the very least, this gondola did not make the new Palisades Tahoe the biggest ski resort in the US, Park City is still over 1,000 acres larger.

The Base to Base Gondola is a two-phase gondola and it was built by Leitner Poma and it has LPA Terminals and Grips with 8 passenger Sigma Diamond cabins. Each stage has a capacity of 1,400 people per hour. Stage 1 has a vertical rise of 1,729 feet and a length of 5,211 feet. Stage 2 has a vertical rise of 1,029 feet and a length of 7,536 feet, giving the entire system a length of 12,722 feet.

Is the drive top or bottom

@@AirwickY this is a two-stage gondola. Both stages are bottom drive systems, and they are actually DirectDrive systems!

I agree and disagree with your opinion. First, the disagreement. The gondola connects both resorts into a massive one. If you park at, let's say the alpine side, and you use the gondola to go to the palisades side. You are able to go back to the alpine side though. I also agree with your opinion because alterra missed the opportunity to make this a funitel or even better, @ 3s gondola to prevent wind holds and closures of the gondola. Since the gondola only has one haul rope, it is not very protected from winds and easily closes down during high wind days. On the other hand, I understand why they went for a gondola. Since if it was a funitel or a 3s gondola, it would cost a lot of money, and they needed to use that money for other things such as, upgrading the slow red dog triple chair into a 6 CLD detach, spending on snowmaking upgrades, and also replacing the funitel's haul rope.
