- It was 3:45 p.m. on April 15, 1978, when a particularly muscular Sierra blizzard struck Squaw Valley ski resort. The red tram, filled with 44 occupants, was heading steadily toward the base of the mountain when an unknown event caused it to dislodge from its support cables. THIS IS THAT STORY from the first responders and a local hero who was on the new Squaw Valley Tram tell their edge-of-your-seat stories. I remember bob carter Used to work at Alpine as a grimmer.
And that line that you put up the lower saddle.
Back in your speedskin days
I lived next door to Goofy on Forest Glen and had breakfast at Smokies with him next morning and hadn't realized he was in the top tram. I miss that dude.
Oh, and I believe Bob Carter was my hang glider instructer and friend.
I worked for SVSC for nine years in vehicle maint. I knew most of these guys. Was not there when this happened, but remember it so well. Also remember the Alpine Meadows avalanche.
I was in KT patrol shack and got a call to bring all our ropes to the mountain run where we met a Sprite. Then we’re dispatched to the lower car. Got home about 2:30 No sleep that night
The tram accident. Long and windy night at 600 feet up in the air.
I was there ,well not in the trams, but I was on my way home to our house on the Truckee river at the entrance to Squaw.I hiked up to the Red tram in the early Summer right before they took it down.Took photos of it hanging up there with the cable still sliced through it.Watched them lower it back down to the tram building.
I was in this event.
