Cheap fix for a rotten boat floor (Part 2 of 2) Installing new carpet

  • This DIY video shows how to cut and install new outdoor carpet. It was really inexpensive at about $60 for the carpet and $25 for the adhesive.
Remember: cutting carpet is a like getting your hair cut... you can always cut more off if the carpet is too big but you can't put it back on if you cut too much off. Take your time.
I don't show the application of the adhesive or the application of the carpet on the adhesive but you can get the idea from the video. There are 3 other tips you need during those steps
    1) try to keep any bubbles out of the carpet. This may require you to return every 30 mins for a while until the adhesive becomes so tacky it holds the carpet when you push it down
    2) do not kneel or walk on the carpet until the adhesive is dry. if you do this, the glue may work up through the carpet and make a stain you can't remove.
    3) temporarily use staples to hold the carpet in place. It won't take you long to see that you need to gently stretch it to get rid of bubbles... and then it will move as soon as you take your hands off the carpet. You can remove the staples the next day.

I would recommend applying Two coats of Flex Seal to all the wood and the edges of the plywood and use 100 percent silicone caulk to the seams of the wood. This would definitely be a 100% improvement. A little more cost but worth the investment, 😀

I'm not one of these guys who says you should have fiberglassed it in. That's your choice BUT you should remove the carpet and put down a coat of something if you're going to cover it with carpet. Bare plywood is going to rot eventually but having carpet on top to hold in the moisture will make this happen faster. I'm all for a cheap quick job when it's called for but simply brushing on some polyurethane could make it last twice as long.

Am taking all your advises expecially the ones you talk about in the end of the video
( if i have to do it againg i would do this difrent ) The problem with that is if i carpet the wood before i put it in then i cant seal it and water will get in there expecially where the foam is! So i tink i will discard that one! Even tho is a good idea! then again if i install one of them strips 0f rubber like molden it may work ! i wich i can add a pic of the molding but is will look like ( T )
flat on top and the othe straight edge will go between the 2 pieces of wood i think that will serve as a seal and divert any water to go to the back of the boat where it supost to go. what you think about that to impruve your idea? as far as the carpet the boss= WIFE) wants blue carpet .

It still good after 2 years. For the cost it was a worthwhile repair as opposed to junking the hull. I admit it may not last 25 years like the original floor but I'm happy with the result. Make sure to use pressure treated 3/4" plywood.

I'm in the same boat as you (pun intended) and just want something to take the boat a few more years that doesn't break the bank. Everyone else explains these complicated expensive repairs and you show a matter of fact approach that very practical. Just out of curiosity, are you starting to see signs of rot after 2 years? Think it'll last 2 more?
