There's plenty of communities that focused on customizing gunpla. Bandai even hosts competition every year, the Gunpla Builders World Cup .
You guys should come out to the Southern California Gundam Model Competition in Pomona, CA on Nov 9, 2019. It's the largest gunpla competition in North America. We had 240 gunpla entries last year and we're expecting to have even more this year.

Japanese model kits are way more advanced than western brands. Most western military model kits don't even have snap together technology and colored parts. Japanese kits on the other hand have pre molded movable frames, color separation as well as snap together assembly. The west needs to improve on their model kit tech.
I think it’s a difference in style and build experience not technology

That being said Japanese kits tend to be more expensive look decent just oob, western kits tend to be cheaper but require more customization

Nice to hear so Gunplan stuff here on this great channel, even better to hear about garage kits and custom built as well as to show how much of a good launch point to encourage going into doing scratch kits and kitbasking. I will admit that I was a bit disappointed that we ONLY saw four of the guy's work, which I strongly suspect that they were picked because they were the most portable that he could bring with him without damaging them all the they from Japan. I would have liked to see his models galleries and photos that he had done over the years or gunpla competitions all over Asia to how Westerners how awesome, creative and prolific this niche hobby is. I hope you will visit this again soon.

i'm collecting all of the bear'gguy/petit'gguy/haro kits they are very customizable and easy to change. i also try to get some bb sd's like sd knight, sd kanu, etc. and match it up with the 1/144 counter part to make a 1/144 version of the bb sd. for example, i took the sd knight's feet shoulder hand skirt and weapons to put it on the 1/144 rx 78 2. whatever is not compatible is easily customizable such as the torso and head

The 1:100 NZ-666 Kshatriya can also be bought as a 90% Preassembled Kit ( mine imgur.com/SDzsbAP.jpg ) for those interested and while not THAT detailed I'd argue that it's still decent enough. Careful though... There's also the official Bandai 1:144 version that is an actual kit with barely any detailing and another 1:100 version with a different artistic approach.
Anyway... If you want you can still go full Adam and give it a Wash and Drybrush probably receiving 80% parity in looks to his...

Well using the Tristan is kinda appropriate for this. If you're going to showcase your skills, use the most trash kit that has been put out in the last few years. If you can make the Tristan look good, you definitely have skill. :P
