      I hear you. You're absolutely right. I'm in no way trying to discount or "bash" NAC. I'm very happy with the results. My brief experience (in addition to research) has convinced me that NAC is a very useful and effective supplement. I'm so glad I tried it and I will continue to use it in the future. That said, the reality is that it was the NAC. Yes the side effects came as I took more and more of it, but the fact remains that it was taking more NAC that got me there. Had I not taken ANY NAC I would not have experienced any "side effects". That said, there's a good chance I would have gotten sick as well. So YES it was the high dose but it was the high dose of NAC. This experience gave me the idea to do some more research and make a video talking about side effects in general. I'm pretty sure I covered the range of dose and side effects here. Once again, your point is well taken and I think it's good for people to know that at lower doses NAC is "well tolerated" as mentioned. Thanks again. I really appreciate you watching the video and for taking the time to share your thoughts here.

    I have been taking around 5 g with glycine (so called glyNAC) with no issue. Initially, there was a bit of diarrhea - but went away quickly.
    That stuff is amazing for recovery from exercise. A study indicates that it takes about 8 months of oral administration of glycine + NAC to raise one's glutathione to youthful level, Indeed, I saw a significant improvement in my recovery ability over many months.

    For me the side effects are (even in low 600mg dosages) that it really drives down moods or feeling or anhedonia. It's like stabilizing the highs and lows you'd normally experience. While that might sound horrible, it's actually taught me these are not vital in life. I also suppose just from NAC one might be able to get some relief from anxiety and depression. Before taking it, there was almost a certainty that because with kids as a parent you know you will get sick two times per year, however NAC seems to supress this, going from long term sickness to no symptoms or 2 day slight symptoms, there is a undeniable effect for me there. I would expect this effect since during the Corona period NAC was extremely popular.

      Yes big pharma will load you up on medication and doctors get kickbacks for pushing their drugs for them, and this is not a conspiracy theory this is the actual truth and that's why doctors do it, "most" doctors become doctors for the money and not just because they want to help, so any more money they can get their hands on they will do it, their willing to sacrifice your health to get more money, it's just disgusting but that's the world we live in so do your homework, but that last statement pretty much applies to most everything you do in life! Just to clarify for everyone that says "this seems like a lot", there wasa human study that was done on NAC & Glycine in elderly adults. The dosage for NAC was 10,000 mg a day for 3 months. GlyNAC reversed their metabolic age to that of a 20 year old within 12 weeks. Do your own research. His dosage was not excessive at all. Also, you can buy NAC in a powder form for higher dosing.

    You didn't mention the "mood dampening" effects and "anhedonia" which has also been widely reported by NAC users. There are studies that show this supplement causes a "flat mood" and neutralises the effects of stimulants. It has a blunting effect on dopamine release after taking any type of stimulant including coffee and nicotine. People report feeling "indifferent" about things in their lives with a marked blunting of excitement toward regular and mundane activities. Other people report that NAC renders amphetamines useless and prevents drugs like adderall from working.

      It is because any amphetamin like Adderall is not good for our dopamine receptors especially if took long term. It's a neroutoxion and adderall causes cell death in our dopamine receptors. NAC is a protective nerotoxon and it helps with inflammation and raise glutathione.

    NAC took 5 weeks stop my "illness". Had another two months well after that (feb this year) then got Anhedonia on two occasions which shut mind and body down for 24 hours each time. Started taking it 30 to 36 hours apart which worked for a couple of weeks. Then had a massive reaction to it leading to massive inflammation and infection markers on blood tests, 10 days of delirium, lost 11 KG (what muscle I had retained)Symptoms of bronchial infection, but definitely triggered by NAC. Am devastated. Made such a difference to my life. Now am back to feeling terrible all the time. This has gone on for decades. No one knows whats wrong with me. • @JTJaredTaylor
      @JTJaredTaylor  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi, just to be clear when you say "supplement" you're referring to NAC specifically. Correct? The best thing to do of course is to check with your doctor. I personally wouldn't be worried. Side effects are more of a possibility at higher doses. I would encourage you to focus more on this statement: “At dosages of 1,200 mg twice daily or lower, (that’s 2,400 mgs total) N-acetylcysteine is well tolerated. At these dosages, side effects are unusual". He goes on to explain that side effects "may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, transient skin rash, flushing, epigastric pain, and constipation." It's important to note that just because a side effect "may" happen doesn't mean it "will" happen. Everyone is different and we respond do things in different ways. I didn't experience any side effects whatsoever until I increased the dose to 6,000mg. Again, that's my own experience and it doesn't mean another person will respond the same way. If you want to read the full article you can go here: www.aafp.org/pubs/afp/issues/2009/0801/p265.html#afp20090801p265-b27 Another thing you can do is find one that allows you to take a smaller dose. The one I got from Sprouts has capsules with 600mg. You can start with that and see how it goes. Hope that helps.

    I think an overdose is never a good idea. I use NAC as a preventative during high risk seasons. No issues except maybe the occasional diarrhea. Additionally, I never give my older patients meds in a higher doses, the older the less tolerated And… the very high doses are use for Tylenol overdose

  • @kmjdebay
    @kmjdebay Před 7 měsíci +9

    What were you thinkiing?!!!
    As others have mentioned, your dose was way too high. You could have had the same benefits at only 2400mg or lower.
    I have been taking NAC for over 20 years. I started after an extended bout of viral bronchitis that left me feeling like I was breathing powdered glass. My new doctor told me to take 600mg 3x day for one week (only 1800mg), then reduce to 600mg a day. Because I also have a tendency to get every respiratory illness going around, I continued. When COVID hit town, I increased to 600mg twice a day (only 1200mg) as a preventive, I have not gotten sick with COVID, flu or even a cold, and have continued that. NO side effects. Ever.
    The AAFP article, states: Adverse effects: Rare at dosages of 1,200 mg twice daily or less; mostly gastrointestinal
    Interactions: Caution in patients taking nitroglycerin and related medications because of potentiation of vasodilatory action
    Dosages: Prophylaxis against COPD exacerbation: 600 mg to 1,200 mg daily in divided doses
    Prevention of contrast-induced nephropathy in patients with coronary angioplasty (Table 1)
    Attenuation of influenza illness: 600 mg twice daily before and throughout influenza season
    Decreased deterioration of lung function in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: 1,800 mg in divided doses
    Adjunct to clomiphene in PCOS: 1,200 mg per day in divided doses
    The higher doses reported in a different journal were used specifically for acetaminophen overdose. So, in that case, the side effects of NAC are less important than the possible fatal acetaminophen overdose.
    Your take away should be to not self-medicate using dosages that have not ever been reported for use with respiratory illnesses.

      It is n acetylcysteine, the way you make it is, in a glass jar, filled with garlic and white vinegar, blend in a blender, then keep it in a jar for 6 months, use a cheese clothe to remove the pulp and what you have is NAC. BECAUSE the way NAC detoxes it can cause kidney stones, to neutralize the negative effects, combine 1/2 tsp of ascorbic acid, and 1/4 tsp of vitamin B1 with 1/4 tsp of NAC.

    • @JTJaredTaylor
      @JTJaredTaylor  Před 6 měsíci +3

      Hi, NAC stands for N-Acetylcysteine. It's a precursor to the amino acid L-cysteine as well as the antioxidant glutathione. NAC is most commonly known for it's use in treating acetaminophen overdose. It's also sold as a dietary supplement. It's been show to be helpful with preventing sickness (especially flu and respiratory illnesses) and reducing flu symptoms when you do get sick. Interesting note: Several doctor's were using it to help COVID patients with positive results. I hope that helps.

    This is nonsense. Heard of GlyNac? It is Glyciene and NAC combined, and is taken in split doses, of up to 3900mg each per day. Studies have been done in humans, and shown to significantly affect Glutathione levels, in the over 60 population. Studies were done at Baylor University, split between 3 dose levels, age groups - 20 to 40, and 60 to 80 - and control groups. These were published a year ago - end of 2022.

      Why take all this to boost your Glutathione? Why not just take Glutathione itself? The dosages posted here in this thread are crazy high! More does not mean better. More equals killing your liver and kidneys trying to filter out all the excess. You also have to be taking clean, 3rd party tested for heavy metals, supplements. Not all are equal. Spend the extra money to buy clean supplements.
