  • Not everybody can keep their own seed potatoes from the year prior. In this video, we show how to turn store bought seed potatoes into healthy potato plants. Through the process of chitting, we give our seed potatoes a head start. In as little as 2 - 4 weeks, you can have sprouted seed potatoes ready to plant in your garden.

That is our hope, to have others get started. If we can help somebody straighten their learning curve I would be happy.

Keep a few chitted potatoes back just in case of a problem. Crop failure do to whatever is a possibility (weather, pest, varmints). This way, you'll have started potatoes to replace any that failed to thrive or that were damaged/eaten. Sometimes, we will fertilize our potatoes with a high phosphorus and high potassium fertilizer. Do this 2 a season for best results.

What can I do if my seed potatoes have already gotten wispy?

They can still be planted. I have planted several seed potatoes with 12-14" long sprouts with success. When we get a few with long spruts, we plant them slightly deeper than the rest of the potatoes. We then add a thick layer of mulch (straw) over the top, covering the sprout.
